Activision declares monthly fee for CoD: MW3

Post » Thu Mar 31, 2011 6:20 am

Activision gets props for being adventerous.

Also, why would they not do something like this when they have a ridiculous game on their hands.

Bahahahahahahahahaha.

Blizzard should never have got in bed with Activision.... it's a shame to see such an awesome company get dragged down into the dirt among the trash.

Also, you guys sure you don't have to pay for the DLC if you have a subscription?

Positive, IGN confirmed it. I can guarantee that it will be cheaper to buy it as normal though.

Now, if you stopped paying this monthly fee, would you still be able to use the free features, or would you have to re-sub to play altogether?

No clue sadly.

The free features (simplistic stats etc) should remain free, not sure what happens with the DLC maps though.

So, will there be regular DLC? OR are they putting all the DLC into this subscription based feature?

Did I not address that a few posts ago? As I said before: ALL DLC will be available to ALL players, the only difference being that subscribers get it at no additional cost, whereas non-subscribers must pay like $15 USD for the map packs.

Also, before we go any farther...

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE!!!!!! It CLEARLY spells all of this out. NO they are NOT charging for online gameplay. YES DLC WILL be available to EVERYONE, FREE for subscribers at no additional cost and for a fee to non-subscribers. YES there will be a free version etc.

I was simply asking a question. No, I didn't read the article. But others apparently have. You didn't HAVE to answer my question. Someone else, or no one could have. But for you to act like there is a stick up your ass over it, is ridiculous.

Wait, what? The DLC isn't subscription based. Subscribers get the DLC for free (cost covered by subscription naturally) while non-subscribers can pay for it as normal. You don't need the subscription to get the DLC.

I'm aware, perhaps I phrased it badly. It's still a new subscription service that has the ability to make Activision money.

You have to understand that it's more than a little annoying when everyone decides to freak out about this like lemmings. And no, that was not directed at you.

A mod should change the topic title, as it's very misleading.

Rockstar is following a similar trend with the RockStar pass. Basically it gets you 2 of the free cases for LA noire and pre-orders you for 2 more cases that come out in the summer.

I'm sure activision won't ship 1/2 a game. I'm sure you'll just have to pay more for the future content if you're not a subscribing member to their elite program or whatever its called...it just going to be to much work for Activision/infinity ward to create public dlc and exclusive DLCs.

Map packs are usually seasonal at best. Elite subscribers are basically going to be paying for this so called trend spotter.

Thats just good business sense. If I were in their shoes I would do the same thing, they are going to make a huge chunk of cash off of this.
They won't scare off anyone, if it stays what they claim it to be it will only be an added bonus, and seeing as how most of the people that play CoD are quick to get the extras (map packs and such) just so they can attempt to be better than the rest, there will be tons of people willing to pay for it. I seriously doubt this will in any way blow up in their face.

I fail to see how it's a misleading title. Fact: Activision is giving content for a monthly fee. That's exactly what the thread title states. Just because you're reading into it isn't my fault.

So they are going to make players to pay extra for better online match search feature and other stuff which might be the only real improvement
for the next CoD game?

Awesome! I think I just became a CoD fan.

I like playing CoD, but really:
Hyper-realistic combat-simulation
 Come on!

People will rage about this, but at the end of the day people will pay the fee. Look at WoW, a grindy MMO with a horrible community and people still pay the fee. I can't imagine Activision will go the whole hog and charge for multiplayer access.

"Activision declares monthly fee for CoD: MW3" makes it sound like they're going to be charging for gameplay, just like if I created a thread about The Old Republic and said "BioWare declares monthly fee for TOR."

If you look at the title, it does NOT read "Activision to begin online program which allows stat tracking for monthly fee."

So instead of innovating this extremely stale series, they instead develop an "Elite" multiplayer service that you have to pay for. Yikes.

Well, keep in mind that the "Elite" system is being developed by Beach Head , not by the MW3 team, which consists of Infinity Ward/Raven. So they could innovate a bit, but I'd place my money on them firing and forgetting MW3 with the same engine and art assets as MW2. Activision just isn't a forward thinking company.

I still think it's funny that they're basically going to be charging for the same functionality that Bungie supplies for free.

I just came in here to laugh at the hyper-realistic comment.

Also, just an FYI, this won't really hurt COD sales. Unfortunately.
