Activision declares monthly fee for CoD: MW3

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:00 pm

"Activision Blizzard Inc. plans to launch an online service called Call of Duty Elite this fall that will work with the next major edition of the game, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3," and future installments of the hyper-realistic combat-simulation game. In a move industry executives describe as a first, Activision plans to charge a monthly subscription fee for the service, which will provide extra content that isn't offered on game discs sold in stores, including downloadable map packs that give players new "Call of Duty" levels to play."

I don't know what's worse; the fee, or the fact that they/someone believes their game is actually a "hyper-realistic combat simulation" game. LOL.

People will complain that it's the worst idea ever, then buy it anyway. Voting with your wallet is an alien concept to a lot of people in gaming.

You should probably check further into that. Theyre not charging for multiplayer. Just some bonus features to enhance the experience. Although i dont agree with it. At least i can still get the game.

For me...meh. I've never been all that into the CoD series anyway. I'm sure the normal, free version of multiplayer will suffice...that is, if I bother to get a copy of MW3 anyway.

I was just planning on renting or borrowing it for the campaign anyway. I'll be pre-ordering Battlefield 3 soon though

It would destroy Call of Duty if the service had to be paid for in order to play the actual online. This is only some features. That being said, I don't understand how Activision could possibly want more money out of this...I mean c'mon, they must make somewhere north of 100 million dollars on this series alone. Not counting their profits from their Blizzard games! Greedy bastards...

Lol same. I'm silently dying inside hoping everyone is just so fed up with CoD and Activision's BS that this will kill CoD, and Activision, and Kotick will be out of a job. Uhg, if this becomes a industry standard I think I'll off myself...

Yea, so how's that going to work? Have to pay for XBL AND CoD online?

EDIT~Meh, optional services. Could care less.

While it's an optional service, the features it offers are free in most other online games already.

You just hit the nail on the head.

But, I got to give it to Activision. They know that they have fans that are going to do this.

Don't play CoD, so I'll just

Besides, it's entirely options, so don't buy it and they'll stop.

That's what you get when your company is run by uncaring cashgrabbing shareholders. I mean, at least when Todd Howard has a bad idea, it's his bad idea, and not some soulless gimmick invented by an idiot in his desire to boost profits.

A corporation is an entity that literally has an insatiable appetite for revenue. At no point in time is it going to stop and say, "ok, that's about right, let's stop making money now." It's the nature of the thing...it's what it does. It's literally a machine that's designed to do that. The only way a corporation will abandon something that could generate more profit is if that thing stops generating profit or becomes enough of a liability in another way such that it offsets the profit it produces. Anyway, as others have said, if you want it to fail then don't buy it. Make fun of your friends that buy it. Make it uncool. :P Or...burn it! Burn it to the ground! :flamethrower:

You will not have to pay for Call of Duty Elite in order to play online. Read the article, folks. Or this Joystiq one:

This is still atrocious. They're just planting the seeds for when they start to take away what's free and add to this Elite service.
