So a company wants more money in an increasingly competitive business?

Isn't that the creed of every successful company though? :P

I love how Kotick puts it with his usual tact:

“We don’t really participate financially in that income stream [ie, XBL.] We would really like to be able to provide much more value to those millions of players playing on Live, but it’s not our network.

In other words, "There's all this money being made, and we're not getting any of it! WTF, that's lame - I want to change that!"

I actually renewed my (now silver) Xbox Live account so I could play some more Modern Warfare 2. I was determined to get to level 70.

This sort of behavior from any company in any medium is completely unsurprising, but it's always amusing that they will never just say it for what it is. You want to provide more value to the XBox players, and you can't without getting the subscription money. Yes, that's it.

:o I want's it! lol. At least I like the duel button :D (get to kill my friends :) )

on subject: I reached 11th Prestige in MW2... It's easy, and helpful... sell the game. I got $25 store credit. Once you sell the game... You will realize... You can buy at like 4 games that are $5, and each one is better than Modern Warfare 2. I think Activision only made one game I liked... Turok, for the N64. I <3 that game.

*wish I had a gaming computer now.*

They know what their priorities are:

$, $ and more $$$$$$$

They're like most video game manufacturers these days:

They create crap and then charge an arm, a leg, a kidney, a lung and your left nut (if you have one) for it.

The only reason they are successful is that enough foolish consumers seem to accept this method. Where are these idiots, so that I can get Bob the dinosaur to give them wedgies?

You mean just like every single company ever?

It's not like the game developing companies were uninterested in making profit in the 80's and 90's, they just weren't anywhere near as good at it back then.

Clearly, Activision are making products and providing services that people want and are ready to pay the prices for. That is exactly what they should do and nobody should be surprised that they are doing it.

Let's not beat around the bush; the issue at hand is that some people are upset because the things they disapprove of are popular. It has nothing to do with eroding the fanbase or whatnot, it is entirely a question of you not liking what they do, while millions of people clearly don't mind.

I stopped caring about Activision months before MW2 was even released.

Not like any single company ever. There's a big difference between profit and maximised share margins. One is good for customer, employees and employer, the other is only aimed at higher-ups and shareholders and the others might or might not profit from it.
Games have gone from being like books and music to becoming progressively more like movies - both in aesthetics and industrial behaviour.

Don't like it, don't buy it

I'm with Terash Cas for most games, I don't usually play MP. For FPS games, I need a great SP mode... and the current FPS I can't get enough of is Wolfenstein (Activision game). The PC version has none of the frame rate issues that the console versions have, and it plays beautifully @ 1920x1080 while dripping with eye candy. Amazing SP experience can keep me coming back to a game for years.

Do you know the origins of Activision? They were a core team of game designers for the Atari (Atari 2600). They realized that without their games, nobody would want the hardware. So they split from Atari and made their own company. On the original Atari, Activision games were most of the "must have" games of that console.

So, with 30 years under their belt, I don't see them "crashing and burning" anytime soon. They weathered through the worst video game bubble in history already.

It is very much evitable. Just gather enough of a flock. Which they already have. Plus, they have friggin Blizzard now and thus own the money printer game.

More than Activision I'd blame each and everyone that bought MW2.

I mean, here comes a publisher that releases an overpriced game on all platforms and what happens? It becomes pretty much the best selling video game of all time. And now people act surprised when they hear stuff like this.

Let them roll out this Call of Wow thing and then let's see what happens. I wouldn't be surprised if it sold as well on the 360 as MW2.
