Adaptability vs Juggernaut

Sure there are times when you want one super overpowered suit of armor, and weapon, and shield, and boots...

About 90% of the time, I end up collecting useless equipment, such as poison resist 10%, or frost shield.. etc..an I've been wishing that these items could serve a better purpose than selling for gold.. I like keeping rare and powerful weapons with a variety of enchantments, but I stick to my little dagger all the time for actual combat

Why would I ever need frost shield? In oblivion, I just paralyze and block/slash with my one single weapon with fire enchantment damage, and I never switch to frost, lightning, pure physical damage, or other weapon types... Nope, not me, just my small Blade type dagger with fire damage.

Magical wielding enemies? Attack with fire dagger... Ice enemies? Attack with fire dagger.. In oblivion, apparently trolls are weak against fire, I never noticed any difference.. and enemies never seen to help each b other out (IE healing spell, or 'timed' group attacks)

Basically.. I just want Skyrim to almost require fire elemental damage against frost giants, and ice against fire dragons - to make you adapt rather than having you as a juggernaut with the strongest weapon and toughest armor. And to have more group AI fighting going on.. (an archers wolf pets blocking you from getting closer to the archer)

kind of like being an average weak citizen, compared to the Dovahkiin, dragon-born juggernaut

what do you guys think? It's fine the way it is and you don't want o be forced to adapt/use fire etc? Or you stick to a limited skill set already based on Role/class (a thunder only/axe wielding viking) .. Does it matter to you? Etc.. :P

I'm going for the Xbox version so far.. but maybe my poor computer could run the PC.. I wonder if someone could mod Skyrim this -extensively-? (super hardcoe adapt mode with hunger etc :P)

I think this idea is widely agreed with in the community. I certainly agree.

I've also heard suggestions that a similar system should be applied to just all armor.

-Fur armor should have frost resistance but fire weakness
-Metal armor has lightning weakness

Can't think of anymore but you get the picture.

I guess they could mix things up a little more, have some enemies that are very tough to kill using a particular weapon or spell. Some immunities could be thrown in, but I don't want to have to change weapons too often or be left sitting there while something eats me because I didn't bring my own special little fire dagger :P.

I always stashed all of the elite enchanted stuff in my home because I hated spending the gold to go replenish the charges... I hate charges. Honestly I like the Diablo 2 system for loot better than Oblivions by far. I would rather have a nice random magical property generator built into the game that randomizes properties but seriously don't make those items worthless after 50 whacks. That drove me crazy. I would have used my magical gear constantly if it wasn't such a dang pain keeping up with the charges. Oh, and yes.. I want enemies to be tougher. I liked how you had to have certain weapon types to damage the undead in Oblivion but when an enemy has magic resistance they should REALLY have magic resistance.

I do agree with the artifacts having useless enchantments, ergo becoming useless themselves. However, I prefer the variety in things as opposed to just having a bunch of unique things which I would end up enchanting similarly. People find different uses for different things though. I don't see why anyone would find poison too troubling, but there will be people using posion protection inside bandit caves. On +100 mode finishing the enemy quickly is preferable, so using fire is more noticable against a frost atronach than just a normal weapon.

I don't think it would be a good idea to make them almost immune to everything but a single attack type, or it limits the variety that Skyrim is trying to offer. At least for lower level difficulties. Higher levels should definatly be more taxing on strategy.

maybe a better post would of been to ask the question of what you would of liked in hardcoe mode :P

but yeah, ontopic~~

I've been playing oblivion again after a long hiatus due to a scratched disc issue .....

and my home is cluttered with objects I'll never use :P just that one dagger I kept O.o
the fact that everyone has uber gear at my level now.. leaves the rest obsolete,
and the hassle of restoring charges made me keep to just the one dagger

Diablo 2 had an awesome system, including Armour Sets .. get a complete set of one armour and you get major bonuses, like an upgraded form of 'wear all light armor fr 50% bonus' :/

some undead.. I remember eons ago when I first 'started' oblivion, I needed to buy a silver sword .. and then I found out any 'enchanted' weapon would work, or daedric daggers etc.. so I never needed silver since.. maybe 3 enemies I encountered in the first 5 hours of the game needed silver :P and then never again..

Full immunity or near-to would probably apply only to the boss of an area.. and most enemies would have low amounts, 5-20% immunity/resistance :/

some games like fire emblem gave it the ol' rock paper scissors thing.. swords strong against axes, axes strong against lance.. lance strong against sword .. or Axes good against beast types, swords against humans, arrows against flying creatures..

Weaknesses on armours is interesting too.. If you've ever played Diablo 2 demo ... all the equipment had negative effects.. and the more 'powerful' had less negative.. Oblivion doesn't have a lot of equipment with negatives, only a handful, that are actually worth wearing - I found gauntlets with sun damage, but gave a resist against normal weapons, and other benefits

more rare artifacts should probably have the most Number of effects... and the more common treasures having one or two.. or something :P

there's just not enough adapting in this game for me so far :P

oh and plus.. summon creatures.. each creature has its own power level that I've noticed.. storm atronach being the most powerful - why summon any other creature/pet? other than preference, even though they are weaker/slower to attack..

only the beginning of oblivion for me had variety (first 20 hours).. with the weakest armours, spells and weapons.. anything enchanted was priceless .. but after those 20 hours, its all "meh' and stored in a treasure chest at home
