Add new textures to armor? (Not replacement.)

Hell again good people of the Bethesda forum,

I'm a fairly novice modder looking to make his first big quest mod. For the section I have right now, I'm looking to have an NPC in some very vibrant yellow robes - so, intuiting my way around the Creation Kit and Paint.Net, I've made custom textures for the MageApprentice clothes set. Male and Female textures were applied right in the Creation Kit, as texture sets on the World Model and are pretty flawless in the preview. They remain awesome in the in-game world and in the inventory menu, yet as soon as my NPCs dawn it, or the player themselves, the yellow robes turn back into the orange MageApprentice variant I had used as a template for the robes. I've also encountered a very similar problem with custom book textures, in that they look amazing in the world space, yet as soon as the player picks them up, the inventory item reverts to the book I used as a template - and animates as such. I've looked around the creation kit to see how I had done my variant of MageApprentice different from Bethesda, and honestly cannot find anything, and most tutorials out on the web seem to be for replacers (which I'm not looking for).

I'm missing a step somewhere but seriously can't find it. I really hope it doesn't involve NifScope, but if there in-lies the solution, I suppose I can handle that.

Thanks for the read, any help is greatly appreciated.
