Add-Ons and PVP [merged similar topics]

AFK bandwidth hoggers keeping queues longer, time wasted on development workarounds, time wasted on support ticket distractions, speed hacks, and generally more misery for players.

Yes, there are upsides, too. But do you want to live with the above? Does Zenimax? I hope not.

This game is philosophically minimalist, not oriented to min/maxing. No floating damage text, no gear scores, no leveling treadmill in preparation for raiding. DPS meters, raiding aids, all of those relatively benign things that well-intentioned add-on supporters want will be dwarfed by the inevitable flood of the all of above problems if you add access to the code via add-ons.

Not worth it.

Agreed. You cannot eliminate them.

But you can certainly feed them and watch them grow exponentially. Give them add-ons and watch.

^^unfortunately this is true. Show me an mmorpg that does not allow addons to keep out all the spammers and ruffians.

Agreed, it's getting old, sorry to add to it, but some voices need to be heard loud and clear by the devs, they're that important. I think that's been accomplished and I'll stop contributing to all the other threads.

I don't like all addons.

Many of them makes the game boring.

But the way you talk about addons and hacks, bots, spams, etc (???)....it's just ridiculous.

You clearly don't know what you are talking about.

Not to mention that it will make it even easier to make optimal skill builds, essentially killing off the aspect of 'making your own way of playing".

Let's face it, a few months after the release the serious players will mostly just use the builds that have proven to be the most effective for their role. It happens in all MMO's eventually.

I don't see what addons have to do with any of those. They generally involve using a third party program. UI mods operate within the parameters allowed by the devs, and have nothing to do with third party programs designed to bot, hack, etc.

I know exactly what I'm talking about because I'm a software developer who's done plenty of add-ons. Depending on the API that's exposed, you can make add-ons do many of the things that make it easier for botters to do what they want, easier for hacks to penetrate the code, easier for gold spammers and AFK bandwidth hoggers, easier to do speed hacks, any number of things. You can certainly limit it, too, but when you give API access, you open up a lot of possibilities and by definition, many of them are unforeseen and unintended. It's not ridiculous, it happens and I guarantee a game this popular will see it happen more than you know.

OP doesn't know what he's talking about.

Hacks, spamming, griefing, botting, all of these things happen in direct proportion to market penetration and popularity. For years, people talked about Apple products being "virus-free" while Windows was seriously insecure. It's true that Windows was more exposed, but it's also true that more people hacked Windows because it was more popular. With the huge rise in market penetration you're now starting to see a lot of hacks on both Mac OS and iOS and it's not because the code got worse, it's because there are more opportunities now for people to hack it.

That's probably why you don't see much of this in EQ2 and other 1st and 2nd gen MMOs. A lot of it's in the numbers.

Indeed. Things like DPS counters will make it even easier though.

Why wouldn't people want mods? I mean if you dont like mods, cant you just not use them? why would it bother you that other people use mods? Isn't it just UI stuff that doesnt give you any pvp advantage?

Why not read the many threads and see for yourself. The arguments are fairly well made on both sides.

Some people, not saying me necessarily, but some people feel they give you access to information that you shouldn't have and that gives you an unfair advantage and/or invades their privacy.

Having a faster computer with three monitors and a gaming mouse gives me a PvP advantage as well.

You can't force everyone to play on completely equal terms in an MMO.

There will always be the most efficient build, the most optimal builds for X or Y and you can never stop that. Executing a crusade against Addons will not stop the wider community from striving excellence in how they play. The crux of the problem is a new wave of players in the MMO genre who are used to being coddled and told they are the 'great hero' or having their own escapist delusional bubble worlds.

Welcome to the MMO Genre.

You sink or swim upon your own merits.

You are not special, You're not a beautiful and unique snowflake.

Same reason people don't want chat bubbles. When you learn the answer to that, you will know the answer to your question.

We're talking about UI mods. Gameplay mods are not allowed. The devs arent even allowing expanded skill bars. I don't see how this makes it easier for things like memory editors to function. The only mods allowed are ones that change the way information is displayed.
