Add something to spend our gold on.

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 1:00 am

Can we please have something to spend money on? I have 198k gold right now and it's rising quickly. The problem is I can't just leave the expensive stuff lying in the dungeons so I HAVE to pick it up and sell it... but what's the point? If there was some huge castle or amazing for 900k gold, I would enjoy all this looting and selling... but as it is right now, my wealth will continue to grow with nothing to spend it on.

Please add stuff to spend our money on. I would be perfectly happy with a castle that cost 2 million gold to fully upgrade. It'd give me something to work towards in the money department.

Sounds like Skyrim needs a brothel.

Jokes aside, a castle via DLC would kick-dairyayre (gotta respect the censors), no matter how expensive.

This is sort of a problem that's been afflicting Bethesda game since at least Morrowind, which is too bad. Admittedly it's a problem in some other RPG's too, though not to this extent. I don't really see a solution though, aside from a high-class brothel.

If loot-scaling didn't exist then high-end equipment could be made available in shops for an appropriately high price making gold worth something.

I'm sure future DLC will provide us with things to spend our gold on and we'll already be prepared for it with all the looting we have been doing. (I hope)

I have to agree, I have not spent any gold for days and I must have 50-100K worth of items in my house chest. I feel no reason to sell anything anymore so it is just building up.

Maybe allow us to purchase a fort and hire guards, while being able to send them on missions. Paying their wages would be nice along with hiring blacksmiths and whatnot or buying gear for your soldiers. Sounds like a decent money sink.

Yes, I would love to be able to buy a huge castle, similar to Dragonreach

-huge castle with high ceilings. Love to have a huge open balcony that oversees the city or mountains
-big den/library room - filled with book cases, desk area, sitting area next to a fireplace, few display cases for weapons etc etc
-big labatory area - small desk, few book cases alchemy table and enchanting table
- armory - multiple weapons racks, multiple manaquins
-full smithing area outside. Also have area for weapons training
-kitchen with several fire pits, small eating table, storage rooms etc etc
-dining room with huge table
-master bedroom at the very top of the castle in a pimpled out penthouse area
-ballroom for parties (this would be good to have a small quest where you could have people come for a party)
-small museum area to display fancier weapons, armor, statues, gems/jewelry etc etc
-backyard filled with a garden, sitting area, fountain etc etc
-stables

:)

Maybe if enchanting wasn't so dumbed down we would have to spend gold on it.

The ability to pour money into guilds or factions to see noticeable changes would be nice. I'm looking at you secret thieves guild thing.

If you think about it, there are little possibility as to what we can add to this game realistically that allow us to spent money for genuine reason other than for the sake of spending. A brothel really is just a gimmick, as it holds little impact on the gameplay other than to RP. A castle would only be a one time payment to buy, and perhaps later a few upgrades. There needs to be a system where we need to actively and regularly spent money on to maintain. Here's a few examples that I could think of.

Bring back durability and make high tier enchanted gear really expensive to maintain.

Allow us to fund the Stormcloaks' or Legion's military campaigns. Where they would battle once a while and we can spent money on requisitions and wages, reinforce Forts and camps.

Invest on towns to improve its prosperity. This will also mean there need to be trading caravans regularly travel between towns. We can then spend on maintenance and hiring escorts. We can also raid caravans should we want to RP as bandits or something.

Ownership of shops, where our investments have a risk factor. We might not profit from it. Just like real business.

Using money to hire master at certain skill to help smith/enchant gear, mix potions/poison for us. So we don't need to spend perk on them.

Other than the durability one and maybe the hiring masters, I think the rest are really hard to mod, that's why I said there are little possibility. But who knows what people can cook up when the CS is released.

Sounds like a personal problem.

Me, I enjoy the fact that my gold is steady even though I only pick up gold, gems, and hp pots in a dungeon, and ignore 99% of the loot. Edit: This means I don't have to fast travel to town after every dungeon to sell. I can run through like 5 dungeons before I start eying my weight. Or 1 dragon, huehue.

Imo, Beth should lower the base carry weight to 200. Maybe 175.

Buying a fort and sending guards on missions, or investing into guilds would be fun though.

Instead of buying a huge castle.... get named Jarl of a town. Riften sounds like it might need a new Jarl from what little I have seen of the current and incompetent one. Then you could invest your hard earned gold into your town. Furthermore being close to the Empire, Windrun, and occupied Morrowind, you could have random assaults on your lands/town/hold and have to use your fortune as a war chest to maintain your dominion. Maybe you could challenge a Jarl, post Civil War, to honorable combat and take over his town too. Well certain Jarls anyway as some will be strongly supported by the winning side that you chose to fight for.

More ideas:

Invest in someone's business (it could go wrong and your gold is gone).
Open your own business (smithy, mill, stables etc., which again could be a bad business, not a definite profit).
Finance a war.
Hire helpers and guards for your house.
(Implement thieves that would actually rob your house. Hence the guards).
Epic loot that could only be bought from Jarls or other high ranking peeps.

Bad bad bad bad bad idea. I have a hard enough time keeping my carry load under 200 as it is with just mandatory items. Heavy armor, variety weapon for variety of encounters, quest items, food/potions, odd books, odd misc items. It can all add up very fast.

Well, I never have this problem and I pick up and sell everything, at least for my current character. I think it varies depending on play style and character (e.g., a thief type stealing everything may have more problems with too much gold than an honest citizen).

An obvious expense that isn't included is simply taxes once you purchase a home in any town. Obviously, there are taxes. You can hear people talk about them. However, you are never required to pay taxes. That's an obvious omission in the game world economy, and it would be a simple patch to fix it.

A big moneysink in Morrowind was for the enchanting services. Especially the constant effect enchants would cost you a ton of gold to purchase. I'm not that far into the mages guild questline, but there was an enchanter who refused to provide his services. Not sure if he'll never provide his services or if he ever allows the player to buy enchantments from him though...

I never thought that having too much money was a problem. Though to be honest, when I look at the amounts given as quest rewards and so forth, I don't think Bethesda ever intended for us to end up richer than the Empire. (I can see it now- you join the Stormcloaks, go up to Tullius and say "Here's two hundred thousand Septims. Take your army and get out of Skyrim." The war gets won without a single battle. :celebration: )

There's a speech perk that allows you to invest in merchants. Granted, it's only 500 gold, but I'm sure an enterprising modder could up that amount substantially. Or you could just invest in every single merchant in Skyrim.
