Add Supreme Court Anthonin Scalia to the Death Toll...

Post » Fri Feb 19, 2016 2:32 am

US Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-35588937 February 13th. I actually had to look hard to find a link that did not have a video autoplaying. Apparently, there is some question about his death.

I happened to like Justice Scalia's remarks, many times. He seemed to be a no-nonsense kind of guy and used logic over "letter of the law" quite a few times.

Like him or not, there is now a vacancy to be filled.

I've seen a few of his opinions/past quotes and I can't say I even remotely agreed with most of what he's said, but a death is sad regardless.

Also, I'll admit that when I first read about it, my inner conspiracy theorist popped out just a bit, but we'll see.

A reminder to keep politics out of the discussion.

All due respect, I don't know how you would even post anything in this topic without it being at least somewhat political.

79 year old man with history of heart problems dies. I can see why people are immediately suspicous of the idea his death could be natural.

I hope that the American political class can respect his memory and appoint a replacement with out the usual unseemly squabbling (but doubt it).

Conditions in which he were found and the rush for cremation have already fueled speculation of foul play. Too late.

That said, he was a friend to the Second Amendment, and my firearms communities are missing him greatly.

Pillow over his head and pristine, unwrinkled bedclothes, plus a rush to cremate....

And no thanks. Wait for the elections.

Police, family and doctor didn't see anything suspicious in his death, just a few political opportunists

As for wait for the elections they're 6+ months away

A president spends half of his 1st term fighting for reelection and is considered a "lame duck" for much of his 2nd. Good recipe for governmental paralysis

...by wacky conspiracy theorists.

Hopefully, people will honor a "strict-Constitutionalist" and not fight against a speedy replacement/confirmation.

Didn't much like the guy tbh, but a death is a death and sad nonetheless. Didn't agree with how politically charged he was when supreme justices are supposed to be as above that as possible, but I know his loss will be problematic with all this stupidity rapidly surrounding his vacant position and the rush to fill it.

And here I thought that he was just another dead Fascist gone the same way as Franco. We can only hope for a return to some Liberty now.

There goes keeping politics out of the thread :D

He certainly wasn't a fascist, repugnant though I found some of his opinions, and at times did manage to uphold the law above his own opinions eg on legality of flagburning

I'd disagree with AlBQuirky in finding it commendable that a judge hold anything, logic or opinion above the law. If they do they shouldn't be a judge, just go into politics

My thoughts,. exactly. Old man with heart problems and people think there is a conspiracy here?

I think you're asking a lot, trying to keep the usual childish and unseemly conduct of selecting another Justice out of the picture :)

A Supreme Court Justice's first "loyalty" is supposed to be to the Constitution. No politics involved, until political parties (ALL of them) wish to circumvent the Constitution. And the Constitution states, "Anything NOT covered here is to be handled by the States." And this where politicians get wrankled. They want Justices that want to give the politicians more power.

So yes, Justices are supposed to be above politics. Yet in order to get to that esteemed position, one needs to BE a politician. Humanity rears its ugly head yet again. Great theory. Terrible implementation. It was left being handled by humans who desire power above all else.
