Add to the list of needed graphics mods

Post » Sun Apr 17, 2011 7:26 am

The following list contains mods and adjustments to Morrowind to increase the overall quality of the game. Most of them are re-textures or replacements along with a few bug fixes and adjustments.
I'm doing my best to keep the following list free from anything that'll drastically change the game or remove the original feel of it. I like to think that most, if not all mods here are within spirit of what Bethesda intended the game to be.
I'm hoping this thread will clear up some questions among the board asking for suggestions for mods and how to "Beautify" the game.

Getting Started

Before installing any mods it is highly suggested that you look up tutorials or advice on the proper way to install them via every internet users best friend, Google.
If you have basic computer knowledge you'll know what folder goes where and to merge duplicates, overwrite old files, etc.
If you have any questions regarding the installing of a mod feel free to ask here.

Morrowind Graphics Extender
Thanks to Tetchy for posting this info. (If you wish this taken down just say so.)

One major step in increasing your Morrowind playing experience is to install Morrowind Graphics Extender or "MGE".
While I am providing some info about it if you wish to discuss MGE or have questions or comments about it please refer to the official topic.
The official topic can usually be found among the first few pages of the Forum.
The following info is taken straight from the MGE topic.

Downloads and important links:
  • http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/morrgraphext/index.php?title=TOC - explains all MGE functions and settings, offers step-by-step guides for common tasks like enabling distant land, activating shaders, or enabling screenshots, has a troubleshooting section to help you with problems, and more.

Required
  • http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/DirectX-9.0c-Redistributable.shtml (latest version)
Note: extract the package to a temporary location, then from that location run DXSETUP.EXE to actually install.
  • http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=A5C84275-3B97-4AB7-A40D-3802B2AF5FC2&displaylang=en (latest version)
  • http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en (some versions of Windows will already have .Net installed - check your system first)

Remember: Always check up on the official MGE topic in the event that updates are released.
_______________________________________________________________________________________

As I mentioned this topic is just to overall increase the quality of the game. Not alter it in any way. I wish for the game to keep its spirit Bethesda intended it to have.
Also, this thread is for you. The community. So if you see a link to a mod that is down, or that you have found a better one for please speak up. My aim is to just have the top notch mods and game adjustments available here.
Lastly I wish to keep this noob (newb, new player, nub) friendly and keep things simple. If you post a suggestion to a mod please make sure it doesn't require 10 other mods to be installed and deeply configured in order to work.

pretty much all of darknut's retextures (he redid the creatures, weapons and armor in hi-rez) they don't take away from the spirit of the game because they're the same thing basically as the original just way better looking.

Edit: also, you want a better beast bodies replacer, liztail's is the one I use:

http://www.liztail.com/view_project.php?prj_id=2§ion=screen

also, I use better faces, but westly is currently working on a face replacer (as I'm sure you've seen on the front page) which might be worth checking out as he tried to make each face similar to the original morrowind face, but better.

You mentioned he's currently working on it. Once he's done and the finished product is released either you or anyone reading this let me know and I'll replace "Better Heads" on the list.

"Oblivion Septims" was dethroned a long time ago as best gold replacer. The ruling king is http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6655.

I would also list the Visual Pack XT as necessary, along with AOF's Waterfalls and Dunmer obelisks. AOF's Barrel's/crates are also quite nice. Oh, and let's not forget AOF's common architecture textures. Also, AOF is swell in general.

I use http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=3088 pack as well, as the Visual Pack's Haalu textures have some pretty unsightly tiling issues.

Now most of the mods I've put up so far are blatant upgrades of their originals. What I need to know now is what are the best mods for replacing grass/ trees/ buildings/ outdoor textures. I know there's a lot out their but hopefully some of you here will be able to provide some reasonable suggestions.
Now just for some clarification. I'm not looking for new landmasses or giant new castles. Just updates to originals. Although there is harmless exceptions. Just going to use the Balmora Temple for example. It's alone back up against rocks and is fairly small. If there was a mod that changed the model for it and made it look more belonging then yeah, there's no problem with that.

ALSO

If you don't agree with a mod listed. SAY SOMETHING. This topic is to get the best of the best. That means the mods most liked and used by the community. So speak up and have a polite debate on which you prefer.

It leads to exactly one download link + It's a matter of taste. If you like it, use it. Better Heads isn't bad either.

In regards to Vurt's mods. He has a lot of different ones involving Tree's and grass. Some say they'll replace all of them. Others say they're for a specific region. Can we get a general consensus on which ones to add? Also if anyone knows which ones are to be used with MGE and which ones aren't please list that as well.

The only thing it will "mess with" is other Hlaalu textures which is kind of the point. It won't screw up any plugins, but it should be applied OVER the Visual Pack XT.

Visual pack XT? The one I have up seems to be more recently updated version. Is the one you listed any better?

But do some of his mods overlap at all? Or will everything work fine when all his mods are installed?

In terms of lighting, I can't live without http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=935 or http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=608. They both compliment each other perfectly. You won't ever set out to dungeon dive without your trusty lantern ever again, and some dungeons become down right scary when you know you're going to have to brave the murky waters to clear the area, lest you bring a Night Eye spell which won't be put out underwater. Not to mention the overall effect is beautiful as it does away with most ambient lighting, leaving the game to be illuminated entirely by light sources the player can interact with.

Here are some links to AnOldFriend3's (mostly) recent mods, some of which I mentioned earlier. They're instant classics in my opinion. Take note that you'll need to install certain features of the Morrowind Code Patch to get the full benefit of many of these lovely additions.

If you're using MGE, you should download and use the shaders http://www.mediafire.com/?azgcwwdtj12, though the DoF shader could stand to be toned down a bit and I don't play with HDR myself.

I can't imagine playing without http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=5897 which adds more trees to the Bitter Coast as well as making all trees leafier. http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6316 gives Balmora the same treatment, effectively making it a part of the Bitter Coast to beautiful results.

Speaking of Balmora, http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7828 put together an excellent mod that enhances the atmosphere of Balmora on it's own. I cobbled together http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7959 that allows Jiub's alterations and Vality's trees to coexist if you decide you want to use them both.

Vality has also added trees to the http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=5981 which are just as nice as his efforts on the Bitter Coast.

Wow! Great post, before I edit my main post again can you go into this Morrowind Code Patch and what needs to be installed? I'm assuming it offers many changes to the game and just want to clarify. I don't want any mods listed here that'll change the game drastically.
(Definitely trying Morrowind Nights)
Also as a heads up I probably won't be able to update it till tomorrow morning so there'll be a delay in the main post update. Thanks again though for this info.

Bump map/reflect map local lighting is the fix that needs to be enabled for AOF's Watefalls and armor.

By the way. A note on AoF's armor textures: Install them AFTER installing Darknut's, since AoF's is only for a few pieces of armor.

This fixes in general for the code patch are useful though. Most are pretty self explanatory, and some of them might not be necessary, but I'd use all the ones that don't seem too outlandish to you, since they make various aspects of the game more playable. I'm thinking specifically of the fixes to weird attribute bugs. Also, for Vvardenfell Visages, this plugin simply replaces the default heads with more high quality ones. Better heads actually assigns individual community developed heads to many(it might even be all, I can't remember) of the NPCs in the game. You can use both simultaneously, that way many of the NPCs will look better due to better head's individual treatment of them, but the NPCs that use default heads will still get an upgrade (thanks to Vvardenfell Visages).

[edit] I'd also recommend book jackets. It's along the lines of a slight change to the game, like you suggested might be nice for the balmora temple. It adds unique covers to each of the default books in morrowind, and there are expansions of the mod for tribunal and i believe bloodmoon as well. Here's a http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=4054 to the original. You can still use better books though, as that's just a replacer for the default texture(in the same way as Vvardenfell Visages). I hope none of the above is confusing, I was in a bit of a hurry when i wrote it.

[further edit] http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27167 by Korana is, I think, a must in any graphics upgrade. The link is to the full list of Koran'as mods, and there's some other stuff you might like as well there. I was always personally attached to the Redoran retexture as well, but some find it too white/bright. If anyone can suggest a better Redoran retexture, I might even change my tastes, however.

Just going to say that I'm not sure if all of AOF's textures need MCP. You should take a quick look at the mod pages to find out, but I'm pretty sure that only the waterfalls and the armor require MCP. The other AOF stuff you have listed should work without MCP.

The files make no mention of it requiring MCP in the description. Perhaps I should just list the Waterfall and Armor as needing it? Or would it not matter in that it should be installed regardless?

It should be installed regardless, but I am pretty much certain that the armors and waterfalls need the new reflect mapping stuff from MCP to work correctly.

Someone feel free to jump in and correct me if I am wrong.

Everything else almost certainly doesn't need MCP, anyway.

If this is a list you are trying to compile for graphical mod recommendations then I wouldn't recommend putting the armor on it. The link that I posted to is only the first rendition of only 4 armor sets. I have already redone the 4 sets with a couple of fixes and still plan to make a couple more before I release those 4 as final. Also the link I posted to is only a temporary host and will more then likely be taken down.

Anyway, only the armor absolutely requires MCP 1.7+. With 1.7+ Hrnchamd introduced a patch that fixed a problem that Morrowind had that prevented the engine from rendering reflection, and bump maps, on skinned models.

The waterfalls do not require anything but Morrowind. However I would strongly recommend using MCP's local lighting fix.
