I want my character to be able to have an addiction to skooma or beer kinda like fallout. it adds to the role playing for me.

Something really cool should happen when you take Skooma that makes the player want to take it again and again. Not just a temperory stat boost.

Addiction depends on you disposition.

Some people can't become addicted, so don't force it on me. I want to drink and smoke skooma all day, like I do in real life. I don't take a stat hit when I go without, why would my character.

+1 for inebriation effects that make you want to keep using the drug, but if you use it too often the effects should gradually get shorter.

I'd say there's a good chance of them implementing addiction as they had it in New Vegas and it was mentioned throughout in Oblivion.

It's going to be awesome if they do :D Especially if they introduce interactivity with NPC's. ie. You can give an NPC some skooma a couple of times and before long they're begging for it... Followed by your extorting them of course ;)

We have been through this before, I'll say the same thing again : sounds like a good idea until you remember there is a school of restoration magic, which can cure poisoning and almost every disease.
You could say that to make the idea of addiction work, restoration won't affect it, but imho, that is an artificial game mechanic, and, within the framework of TES, getting addicted then going to the chapel and getting completely cured makes perfect sense.

I don't know what kind of effects that would make the player want to keep taking the drug. Maybe have something along the lines of if is taken then you gain X + Y stat, but lose Z stat. And if you keep taking it you will gain even more benefits + negatives. Here's a horrible example of what I mean. Let's say you're playing as a spell caster who uses a staff. If you take, i don't know, skooma for example, it will give you a boost to your maximum magicka but a decrease to your maximum stamina, therefore you will WANT this drug often.

Addictions to drugs should exist imo. Having an addiction to alcohol is an entirely different thing tbh. Even if you drink loads and loads of beer for a couple of years won't make you an addict, i've sure drank my share of beer and never really felt the need to drink beer in the morning or anything like that. Same goes for my friends, i'm pretty sure that developing alcoholism must have a lot more to do with your genes than having an addiction to drugs.

If addictions for the player will be in the game then it should be strictly to drugs. However i would like to see some alcoholic npcs. Being an alcoholic myself in Skyrim after drinking a hundred beers would just destroy immersion lol.

I was thinking along the lines of actual, visual inebriation effects and player stumbling that are simply amusing to watch, causing you, the person in front of the computer to want to keep doing it. There is a mod for fo3 that adds tons of drugs with many unique visual effects. Its always fun to take a drug that causes paralysis and hallucinations, then watch my character stiffen up and fall over as the screen turns orange/purple

That's true, except it's the same for all drugs. Trust me heroin, coke, ecstasy are the sane way. In fact alcohol has been named the most addicting of all drugs by some scientist (I believe it's caffeine) yet you my fine sir, as well as I, are not addicted. Which means addiction has underlining conditions.

BTW, it's not genetic. It's more disposition (social-ecosystem, childhood, etc)

Ah, well on that case yeah that sounds like a lot of fun. Maybe you can reverse pickpocket a drug on someone and watch the way they react as well.

I gotta agree, which is why I think drug tolerances are a better idea than addictions. Make the inebriation effects so amusing that the player gets "addicted" to watching their character stumble around drunk, trying to swing a sword.

Or "poison" their food with skooma haha. It would be fun if you could get a guard to inadvertently take skooma/moon sugar and watch them get fired for doing drugs.

That would add to immersion quiet substantially. Right before you battle a dragon you can be having alcohol or skooma withdrawals. It would actually be cool if it did affect your fighting.

then the can add.... The rehabilitation guild....

Yeah but what of others? People who are addicted to drugs that you normally give them would come begging to you... These people mightn't be granted healing at a temple for their sins.

????
Profit.
