Adding topics to quests: Losing result scripts?!?

Post » Sat Jan 23, 2010 12:50 am

Ok, I don't know if this is just me, or if this is a known issue, but it has now happened four times straight while adding some dialogue to a DB mod I'm working on.

I needed to insert a new topic in each of 5 quests. The first one went ok, so I continued on. The next four is where it turned strange. When adding the new topic to each one, the topic which was displaced (moved down) by inserting the new one lost any result scripts which were attached to it. Gone. Poof. Thankfully I've made a habit of only using those for setstage calls most of the time, so it wasn't hard to recall what went there. The problem clearly isn't random though and I was wondering if anyone else has run into this. If so, it's yet another gotcha on a growing list of gotchas.

A quick illustration of what I did:

TopicA
TopicB

Add new: TopicC, producing:

TopicA
TopicC
TopicB

TopicB is the one losing its script. Other topics after TopicB are not affected by it, thank God.

Ah, that explains the problem I keep running into. I was about to start investigating it. At first I thought I had just missed some scripts (I've been doing hundreds of dialogue entries a day and could have lost track). But one I had just put in disappeared. This is an annoying problem...

I had thought that maybe it was just caused by right-clicking in the topic list (to add a new topic) while inside an already existing topic. That would have been easier to work around. Meh. I'll have to play around with it and test it

Took me a while, but eventually found it:

Looks like the solution is to create a Dummy topic (no results) and have it selected whenever adding a new topic. So glad I found this. Modding was about to become a nightmare.

Oh good, so at least there's a workaround for it. Certain things have definitely become much more clear now that I'm aware of this problem.
