Adding your own in-game music

Post » Sun Aug 21, 2011 2:57 pm

Without a doubt, I have to say Jeremy Soule is one of my favorite video game composers and I always appreciate his work. Nevertheless, I find myself yearning to add more tracks to my in-game worlds after putting in a lot of hours. I tend to prefer music that meshes well with the existing world, so I personally wouldn't drop in something like rock music (though I'm sure some people do). My question for fans is what music do you feel will help round out your Skyrim experience, give the world some more life, or simply add to your gaming pleasure?

I am pretty excited to add this track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JK2dyztcYXI&feature=related

Listening to this piece evokes my nostalgia for Morrowind while changing it just enough to make it new to my ears. As I hear the track crawl by, I can so vividly envision my character surveying the icy mountains and world below as he is perched atop one of the game's many craggy peaks.

EDIT: I DO mean through player mods, though it really is a matter of dropping an .mp3 file in your skyrim/data/music folder.

I hope they let us do that on the console version since we can't add it to the music folder, which PC users can.

..To those acting as if this is new, as I'm sure OP knows, this sort of thing has been done before. He's not asking if it can be done - I'm sure he knows it can. He's asking what music you'd put in.

Afraid I don't have much knowledge on this sort of thematic music, but I'm very eager to see what people come up with - would be nice to add in ASAP. Oblivion for sure had a pretty lacking variety.

This thread must live.

I wish they would add a feature like this so you could play songs from ur console in the game, i want to have my metal blasting during battles, especially when fighting dragons, that stuff needs a hardcoe backing track IMO

Why on Earth would you want to ruin the in-game experience and music by corrupting it with your own sound files?

Quite the opposite, when it's done properly it's a massive improvement. Oblivion's 6 tracks were very quickly memorized by most. When good modders get their hands on a good amount of fitting climactic music, and have time, the results are pretty incredible. It basically means you just have more variety of stuff that's in the same vein as the original stuff.

Then there's people who want to blast metal while playing this fantasy game, totally different ball game. It's a little weird to me, but hey.. to each his own.

By the same reasoning, modding the game with third-party content would be corrupting Bethesda's product? I respect the opinion, but I'll have to disagree. Like I said, I personally like to hear some thematic consistency between the vanilla tracks and one's I happen to add in. And to those who were confused, yes this thread is merely asking what music one would potentially add in. I've done this with both Morrowind and Oblivion so I'm fairly comfortable with continuing the practice.

Well why make mods then if it'll ruin the vanilla in-game experience and "Corrupt" your own game files?

Fellow Aussie: Are you aware of anywhere we can buy the Collectors Edition (the one with the art book, dvd, statue, map)? I know about EB and JB HiFi's pre-order bonuses, but I'd rather get that.

Agreed, I get tired of everyone giving the simple solution "make a mod". I'm pretty sure most of the Elder Scrolls players will be using a console.

The music that I enjoy wouldn't fit in too well.

You could just copy your songs into the music folder.

Morrowind and Oblivion both have good music packs. There will be plenty of options for adding to my music later when I buy my PC version. (I do the 360 version for the first couple months or so for achievements, networking, and giving time for the good mods to come out).

Just want to say... nice Steve Vai pic. I will be listening to heavy metal while playing as well. Most likely KoRn or Alice in Chains... maybe even Norma Jean idk.

One could merge all their Elder Scrolls music into one directory as the subfolders are the same (Explore, Battle, Special), then SymLink the other Elder Scrolls games' Music directories to whichever has all the content. Then all Elder Scrolls games would have all the music from all Elder Scrolls games while the tracks would only need to be in one place rather than being duplicated.

Also, the "Conan the Barbarian" and "The Lord of the Rings" soundtracks have some great tracks for Elder Scrolling.
