Addon Warning!

Post » Mon Mar 24, 2014 11:56 am

TBH

True, I am not over happy about certain addons. Some addons will be cool to have, others are cheating.

THE REASON THAT I AM POSTING THIS:

Just to give a far warning of be careful when one can download addons. I do not know if this video is real or fake, but in the long run that does not matter. It is a good warning! This video might be about WoW, but the lesson can be for any online game -- Single or MMO. Take Heed!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0MuQitfFkM

I might not like all the addons, but I do want to help follow players / fans anyways.

Can an addon like a key logger work in ESO? Is the API open enough to allow this to happen?

Bethesda/Zenimax will take any type of cheating into account and destroy any access it has in MMO's, don't worry. But remember, your definition of cheating in addons, and ESO's definiton, may be extremely different. Some people think seeing others buffs is a cheat, where as i find that completley idiotic.

All in all, they will take good care of the cheaters and hackers, according to THEIR GAME REGULATION STANDARDS.

I think it is best to download addons only know "safe" sites. Do not use a random forum post link on the internet.

It's always good practice to only D/L ANYTHING from trusted sites, of course.

Addressing the last sentence. Would you please stop fearmongering?? A third party keylogger has nothing to to with the API, it would be an executible file hidden as an addon.

Sorry, I did not know. I am new to the whole MMO addon. I know some player mods that come in exe files and can be bad to use (depends on the web site download). Addons do execute code also, I did not know if they can use 3rd party software or not...

Nitpick:

it's only cheating if the rules say it's cheating.

I have copy/pasted my passwords for like 9 years. Its a simple method to avoid basic low profile keylogging.

Do not download executable from another user on another site unless he is reputable (still dangerous).

LUA addon are all text files and should not contain any sort of binary file. No .class or compiled binary etc. They are text file. The addons are limited on what the LUA API allowed the mod to do.

That would be a different type of maleware, keyloggers are small, basic and very low profile. A maleware program checking the RAM or clipboard or documents is going to be higher profile, thus making it much easier for your anti-maleware/virus application to detect.

Add-ons for this game should be .lua format. Personally I would never use an .exe add-on no matter where it came from.

A large amount of people get their gaming/bank accounts hacked through malignant links in phishing e-mails.

Ofcourse your opinion matters, but the fact that you have little to no experience in MMO's, doesnt give your topic much of a backbone. And thats why addons are such an issue i believe, people coming in, with little to no experience complaining about something they have no idea about.

Just my humble opinion.

Isn't ".lua format" like a DOS batch file? It might be text, but it is also code that a computer run. Any code can be hack. Can API read files from a hard drive or send info to a 3rd party web site / address?

Only way to learn to ask quests, right? I have been playing RIFT least four or so months, I have seen some addons and how others have acted with them and how they treat others. My ideas are based on that data.

Longtime WoW player (raider/PvP) who used way too many add-ons. Personally I find this game refreshing, I will probably use a few of the allowed add-ons. If ZOS allowed no add-ons I would still have no problem.

Its really easy to avoid getting a virus.

Step 1, download an antivirus software, such as Malwarebytes or AVG, both are free.

Step 2, after downloading the file from a reputable source, but before doing anything else, scan the file with said antivirus software.

If youre that dense or lazy that you cant follow 2 steps, you get what you deserve.

I cant help but to think that the OP has an ulterior motive though. Seems like add on bashing to me.

Yes, but again you came in blasting addons immediately without valid information, THEN you asked your question. Nothing wrong with simply asking a question, but when you come in and say this addons cheating and that isnt cheating, your just another non experienced MMO'er whos going to get called out on it.

Not trying to come off harsh, but i can't stand when people call addons cheating, when they don't have barely any experience in MMOs. Let alone one thing you may think is a cheat, is simply standard for ESO's addons to be implemented.
