Adjustable FOV

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:28 pm

Adjustable field of view. This is a deal breaker for me and I'm sure it will be for others. Lot's of game developers don't seem to think this is very important but it's extremely important to me.

BFBC2: Changeable in config files, set it once and forget - Great!
L4D1: Not adjustable
L4D2: Pretty much hacked and is now adjustable, probably be taken away soon
Killing Floor: Must bind a key and press it every time you spawn- Annoying
MW1: Config files - Good
MW2: Locked FOV65 are you [censored]tin me! Why I will never buy this game
ES IV: Must open console and type in again after talking, sleeping etc - Annoying
Doom3: Haven't found a way yet
Call of Cthulhu: Config tool yay! - Why I keep playing this interesting game
Borderlands: Config tool I'm pretty sure

Some examples there, TF2 is the only game I have heard that a has a FOV slider in it. What's the deal game devs? Stop thinking its exploiting/cheating because that's ridiculous! Tell me I can have at least 100 FOV in Brink and I will go pre order now! :)

is this about how .. hard to say this correctly... sigh, how wide and high you can see?
because i think in a fps that would be kind-of-cheating, as in, you could make it see all around you, leaving no blind spots for the player to deal with.

I am very sure you can set your fov through console / cfg, we've been able to do it in their previous game and this game is running on the same engine as their previous release and they had console enabled for it. Max fov was 105 I believe but don't quote me on it ;)

Why do you care Nikto? This is for PC, nothing that would affect you console players anyway.

No you could not make it see all around you lol and you certainly still have blind spots. Bigger FOV means smaller targets also so it's a trade off. Go into a game like Killing Floor and set the FOV to 200 and see if it would help you "cheat". Let's say a person is coming at you from an angle, if you are standing still with a FOV at 100 vs 80 you will see them sooner yes, but so will 5 millimetres movement of your mouse and your not just standing still all the time. Anything below 100 feels like I'm wearing glasses, a zoomed in feeling.

He's right when he was talking about their previous games. Don't know about Brink itself. 90-105 FOV should do fine.

*wonders where zerg got the idea i'm a console player*

just a thought but, expanded view=>smaller targets? then if you have a bigger screen you have just deleted that one downside, no? or if your talking about the accuracy of the guns, take accurate guns?
it may not be cheating or hacking, but i must say i wouldn't find it fair to battle a guy who has a bigger FOV when i'm an operative.

Higher FOV = smaller targets + the game seems to be faster. A bigger screen, doesn't help. We have 2 tv's here, a huge one and a normal one. I rather play shooters on the normal one, because it gets frustrating to keep turning your neck. If you can, you should find a game and play with the FOV settings. I recommend staying within 90-105. It doesn't make much difference. 105 let's you spot targets slightly earlier, while 90 FOV is easier to do 1v1 battles. Oh and, try to play with an FOV 150+, won't make things easier. Most games limit FOV settings anyways.

Personally, I prefer a FOV of 90. Everything below feels constricted, everything above feels too wide.

Iirc, it felt similar to Bad Company 2 in the demo.

I came from a team fortress classic background so yes, the ability to have a fov 120 would be a cool thing for me D :

I'd just like to say that I have preordered from D2D, and this topic is nearly a game breaker for me, and since there hasn't been a dev or mod reply yet, I'm putting my vote in for either an adjustable FOV for the pc version, or at least some consideration put into it from the devs. A console fov ported over to PC simply doesn't cut it anymore, but I'm sure they know that after how long Brink has been in development. Looking forward to May 10! :)

Back in the days of the original Quake, I learned to comfortably play at FOV 120 - moving FOV wider or narrower made it harder for me to play. I either lost too much accuracy or too much visibility - 120 was optimal for me.

I'm going to be playing on PS3 though, so doesn't make a difference to me any more. Definitely one of those "PC players should have this option" moments though, so it has my vote.
