Advancing in guilds

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 10:33 pm

I got an idea. I never liked advancing in guilds. I mean, complete 3 quests, advance to a higher rank...
I′d like something like "asking" for advancement quests. And the regular ones would be randomly generated. Also, if a member of a legion or a local militia or something like that, if i would mess around in uniform sometimes a civilian runs to me calling for help. Also bring back skill requirements for higher ranks.

+1 for this. There could be regular quests that are based more on radiant story and are repeatable to an extent (after an amount of time has passed, a similar quest based on the same radiant story script becomes available). Then there are the advancement quests, which have skill requirements and require you to have completed a certain amount of regular quests.

+5 to deathcoffee's idea. That is at the very least the type of depth of experience we should have in Skyrim's faction system. The good thing is, based on the April OXM, Bethesda is itching to tell us more about awesome faction stuff next. I'm guessing we'll have info like that by April 20th. My fingers are crossed.

Itching? Then I am too. And yeah, there was an annoyance factor with Oblivions guild advancements, but I could never put my finger on it. I just liked Morrowinds set up better. I'd be in on advancement quests also.

I'd rather have quite a few odd jobs that are guild related that are available on a poaster board of some type. Harder ones are harder and restricted to guild levels, but give more gold. Once you have completed a few of the quests, then they could either recomend you for advancement or you could ask for it. Either way, you'd then get a special quest that pertains to that guilds main quest line. If you don't advance and just take odd jobs, you shouldn't be able to advance in the guilds main quest.

Some of those odd job quests should change slowly over time to, kinda give a sense of time passing. Its asking a lot, but guilds would be super fun. I'll take what they give, and I hope for the best and cant wait to hear, but we'll see if its as cool as my imagination can create it to be. Probably shouldn't get my hopes up, but meh.

Radiant story odd jobs found on posters would be fine, but I'd also like to get some non-advancement quests from actual npcs

I'm sure that will be possible too. Its just having one guy at every guild hall who knows all the odd job quests seemingly by heart is kinda pushing it. I think the option to take some quests and pass on others would be pretty cool too. Like you're given the option to take any of them that are in your rank, but only one at a time so you have to choose if you need some easy money or if you're willing to risk it for a higher reward.

I don't like skill requirements. Instead make the advancement quests actually demand the use of the guilds preferred skills. Serves the same purpose without the guy suddenly knowing "you're over level 30 in alteration and enchanting you can advance now". Instead make the quest have some point where you have to use a level 30 alteration spell or a level 30 enchanting challenge. Much more smooth.

Yeah this is a good idea. I suppose it's still a "skill requirement", just a much better implemented one. It would be nice to be able to cheat too, and perhaps just buy a scroll that does the spell for you :P

Skill requirements and own advancement quests sounds good. I also hope you need a certain reputasion for each rank.

Yeah. Cheating was one of the ideas I had when i thought of it.
For mages guild the advancement quest would involve a puzzle like the one in the ayleid ruin with the pillar in oblivion or a long deep pool where your magic is blocked so you have to make it through with only one water breathing spell or potions. Thieves guild you would have to sneak through a well guarded compound and snatch an item off a table. Or you could just buy a scroll of invisibility and waltz in and use telekinesis to pick it up from a dark corner.

A reputation and skill based system would be nice, as well as different paths in the guild you could take. Instead of going straight for guildmaster, you could end up in different positions depending on your skills, rep, types of quests taken ect. minor quests would just be tasks that give gold and minor amounts of rep, advancement quests would require appropriate levels of skill and sometimes full blown questlines for higher up positions. Recognition from other guilds should both help and hurt you as you try to advance in guilds.

Ranks of importance should have to be maintained to some extent, minor positions requiring little effort and guildmaster requiring a lot.

It would also be nice if you weren't the only one with ambition in the world too. Perhaps say there's more that one candidate for a certain position, and you can either bride people, kill/main your opponent (obviously if you get caught then you don't get the position because, well, you're a wanton murder) or just plain old be better than him.

This sounds like a great idea to me. If Radiant Story is all it's cracked up to be, I'll very much look forward to something similar to this in the guild implementation. It'll improve the way the guilds appear to interact with the world as well. Little jobs, in addition to the bigger contracts you do to advance, will be a great little detail to make the guilds feel more real.

I think the relationship with your guild leader should effect if you should get an advancement or not. I also think once you become a higher rank (along 75% completion) you should start tending to your relationships amongst your subordinates.

Since radiant quests will play a significant factor in the game, I think certain types of quests should help make it easier to advance. For instance, if you've done any rescuing missions or bandit killing ones, it should be noted by your Figther's guild. Its like working overtime in a sense.

No no, see if there is a forced number of random quests one must complete before advancing then you have the Saints Row problem. Forcing x ammount of quests to do 1 actually good unique quest does not for good gameplay make. Guild advancement was perfectly fine in Oblivion, if they want t change it, maybe add very minor tweaks. Adding more clutter to somthing is not a good idea

It should probably take your reputation into account too. I mean, if you're the champion of the arena I doubt you'd join the fighter's guild as a simple recruit - being sent to kill rats etc...

I don't think most people are saying you need to have a bunch of minor quests before advancement. I think what the basis of the idea is, is that there are odd jobs that you can take from the guild, and taking these may affect the dispositions of other members of the guild.
