Advantages and Disadvantages.

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 1:21 am

There was a system in place for daggerfall called Advantages and Disadvantages. This, IMO, was excellent. You could give yourself perks (Advantages) and that would make it harder for you to level your skills, but you could offset the penalty with (Disadvantages). An example of an advantage would be 3X the magic which would increase your magic by 3, an example of a disadvantage would be forbidden weapon, or phobia to deadra which would make deadra have an easier time hitting you and you a harder time hitting them, while doing less damage per hit. Do you think this will ever be implemented again? Also do you want it implemented in Skyrim? I request for the majority who answer to have had some experience with this system.

Never played Daggerfall, but that sounds like a pretty sweet rpg element.

It was great... they should add it to Skyrim, but they probably won't.

Is this something you choose when creating the character or on level up?

Well, if they do implement it, they'd better do a much better job balancing it... the Daggerfall version was just plain broken. I doubt they'll implement it, and while it might be nice if done correctly I'm not going to lobby for it particularly...

It's something which you were able to choose when creating your character.

It made classes mean more, but in a classless game like Skyrim, it can't be implanted.

I didn't even vote seeing as how the perk system in Skyrim is just the most recent incarnation of the Advantages in Daggerfall.

It was, especially spell absorb, though that magika burn would sure hurt if you weren't careful!

I suppose birthsigns and traits (new vegas) are a bit similar, except the advantages and disadvantages are selected by the devs and rolled up into one, rather than allowing the player to select them.

yes, but for instance "adrenaline rush" you would activate that once a day in oblivion whereas in daggerfall it was a passive ability which activated when you were in critical health. Of course this made in not very helpful since at that point of time you were usually fleeing for your life :P but still that's the way it was. I do believe that it's a good system, but could definitely do with some fixing

The disadvantages aren't mandatory. You don't have to take a disadvantage to balance your advantage.

Then you have no worries, you don't have to add any disadvantages at all :D You can add only advantages..it will only take you 3X the normal amount of time to level each skill. So say you need to sneak for 20 total hours to get from level 89 to 90 sneak it'll only take you 60 hours :D If you're going to sneak anyway who cares :)

Not completely true. Advantages and Disadvantages is inherent trait that one can put themselves to be strong/weak as certain parts right at the beginning of the game, in which I assume the perk in talking involve leveling up and obtain certain ability through this (alias Fallout). For example, I can make my self resistance to magic but I have to "equal" or balance it out by either making myself have the ability to burn be in the sunlight, not being able to use a certain type of weapon, and/or become afraid of a certain type of monster. Its basically customizable Birthsign System/Trait System on steroid.

If one want to have a good idea of what http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:ClassMaker#Special_Advantages and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:ClassMaker#Special_Disadvantages, just click the respected link.

Who knows? I doubt it, but who knows? I definitely want a Daggerfall-esque advantages/disadvantages system back, though.

I've played Daggerfall all the way through, perks are just the most recent incarnation of that system. Like I said above <_< Oblivion just took the Advantages system in another direction. I didn't mention disadvantages because I wasn't talking about Disadvantages, I was talking about advantages. The basic concept of advantages is what created the perks system.

Not very likely least not as it was done in daggerfall.

Remember they are making the game easier and quicker to start off.. less complex startup. But that doesnt mean we cant have them come about as you go through the game. quests to gain powers with side effects... options to gain benfits with catches... pay x gold supply y blah de blah and get this but have to deal with that...

It might happen. But I dont think so.

but one of the most enjoyable things about having a character is making the character. I really love character creating, to me it's very essential in personalizing him. The new method in my opinion makes him less personal in the beginning, but as you grow making more and more personal, sure it's a different approach but I still like the original.

That is pretty much saying that in the Elder Scroll perspective, Birthsigns and "Oblivion" perk are the "same"; for a Fallout example, Traits and Perk are the same as well.

Remember that Birthsign is a "bastardized" version of Advantages and Disadvantages and Oblivion have shown to have both system.

Also remember that inherent does not automatically mean "gain" or "learn". That is what make Birthsigns/Advantages and Disadvantages/Trait different from Perks.
