Advice for Fallout 2 Klamath

Post » Tue Jan 25, 2011 3:14 am

Well I've completed Fallout 1 and I've moved on to Fallout 2.

I need a little advice/help on Klamath and Golden Gecko Hunting.

I've found the Pipe Rifle which isn't holding up well against the Golden Geckos, I don't have enough money for the 10mm Pistol and I've found a Tragic Deck of Cards and I've guarded the Brahmin. I came across a crashed Vertibird with two dead guys with no items (a real help that was) and a robot. Is there something nearby weapon wise I can grab to fight the G/Geckos and sell the hides or anywhere else I can go to get some free weapons, any advice would be helpful. Thanks LTJ.

PS I'm happy enough with spoilers so fire away.

Go to trapper town on the west-side of Klamath and investigate what's going on over there before you decide taking on geckos, especially the golden ones.

Spoiler
You'll find a 10mm pistol somewhere in the rat caves and some other useful stuff + the giant rats are an easy kill to build up a little more exp.

*Edit* Tips for gecko hunting: Well... that depends totaly on your character. I prefer hit and run tactics as a highly agile sniper.

I agree with the above, with one additional extra caveat - Give the Golden Gecko's a wide berth until you can buy Sulik's freedom. Once you've got Sulik, then the 'Still quest is acheivable.

Don't head to the Toxic Caves until you've completed everything at Klamath (and completing everything in the Den in addition to that isn't a bad idea).

Yeah what everyone else said. Just be sure to check every bookshelf you see, with one notable exception the book shelves in every town hold many treasures. But most likely that piperifle you have will be the 2nd most powerful weapon you can get until you can get to the Den. If you don't know where that is:

Spoiler

Ask around the bath house.

Sulik is a companion. Early game he rocks, and because Interplay much improved the companion interface Sulik rocks in the late game as well.

Ol' Bone Nose (Sulik) can be found working off his debt in Ma Buchanan's store. In addition to being a "Talking Head", he's a melee' expert with a shedload of HP - Let him tank whilst you shoot from a distance. He's also a fairly "Cheap" Companion compared to other companions (Just replace his Sledge with a Super Sledge when you find one, and give him Power Armour when you get a spare, his high HP means you can save your stims {just use them when they're low}).

In a sense... naw, he's a companion.

Yeah the toxic caves are quite achievable with Sulik by your side, without completing the Den first. Oh, don't mind Grampy Bone btw. :D

You can also complete Whiskey Bob's quest by stealth and hope for the best or run like hell, if you got the agility that is. There are only 2 or 3 golden geckos lurking around down there.

Excellent did the Den, found V. was bringing him with me off the grid and he crashed the game, I presume. So left him there cudn't be bothered restarting again. Did the Chruch as well. Yes Sulik I know the guy you mean, I thought it was sum sorta ungraded pistol. I know, feel free to slag me off. Can't afford to free Sulik just paid for V. Again thanks big help, I tried to fight one of the Gold Geckos with the spear, it actually performed better than the pipe-rifle. :)

Now if you want Gecko Skinning Perk that's a whole other Quest. It will let you take the skins of all the geckos but fire gecko's. First look for rubber boots. Then look for a woman named Ardin Buckner she will ask you to find Smiley. Don't go to the Toxic Caves till you go to New Reno. Alot of spoilers ===>
Spoiler
In New Reno find the New Reno Arms, there you will find an Electronic Lock Pick. Once you have Good to High Lockpick and repair skills then go to the Caves take the boots with you. Get past Golden Geckos and there are alot of them. At the very back of the caves there you will need to repair a generator to power elevator, need the electronic lockpick. Get that open and well I think I said alot already :D.

You can go to the Caves and Kill the Geckos and Save Smily but then you will ask what's behind those Doors? By following my advice you will get XP along the way and be able to save smily and open those doors. Another word of advice, take smily out of the caves first then go back to the elevator. Oh and save before you go in. Don't forget the rubber boots keep as many pairs as you find.

Yep, FO2 has a tendency to crash once in a while, save and switch save slots often is recommended and indeed sometimes certain weapons/ammo differ in damage. There is an AP ammo bug in the Vanilla version btw... Anyway another tip I can give you is, if you have high luck/perception stats or the finesse trait (not necessary but handy): Perform targeted melee/ranged attacks on their legs to cripple them.

Yes there is.

Open your config file (fallout2.cfg) and make sure the music path entry points directs to the right folder. It should look something like this:

music_path1=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data\sound\music\
music_path2=C:\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2\data\sound\music\

If you use Vista/Win7 never install in the "Programs Files" Folder coz then the music files are probably located here somewhere:

C:\Users\"yourusername"\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\BlackIsle\Fallout2

No problem, ...

I forgot to mention the music files are only located on your HDD if you did a humongous installation otherwise you'll find them on your cdrom or disc image file.

Indeed, although a PC has more options and once you know the tricks/tweaks it becomes easier in the future. Oh well... it's an old game so it has a few elderly hickups nowadays.

The forum moderators should make a better sticky btw on how to properly install the oldies, it would save a lot of trouble shooting.

*Edit* Enjoy the music, Fallout 2 has some wicked tunes. :P

If you do head to the toxic caves and have any companions, they also need to have rubber boots in their inventories. Or the acid will hurt their little feetie-weeties

Oh Great! Is there any reason why I can't bring up the character screen in Fallout 2, I've leveled up and when I go to apply my nearly earned points I click on CHaRacter and nothing happens. I'm really getting close to my limit with PC games. Why do I even bother.

Oh hadn't checked back yeah found the rubber boots went back with Vic and gave him a pair as well but he didn't use them :(

Probably a bug. Try pressing "C" on the keyboard.

Him having them in his inventory is him using them.

You sure you didn't just let him run too long in the green goo? The boots will melt with too much exposure.
