Advice for a Warrior trying to become a Mage?

Post » Mon Jan 06, 2014 3:09 pm

Spoiler
When you start your new character, and you escape with who ever you choose, once your bonds are cut, do not use any of the gear in the trunks. Make sure you get the extra key. You can don the boots, but that is it. There will be a set of robes and a hood to help your mage.

When youstart to battle, put a flame spell in each hand. Do not just push the triggers to fry someone, but push and release, push and release. This way your magicka builds faster and stays up there better when in battle. It makes it so that your magicka refills faster. Hope that made sense. With fire spells, the target will still burn a little after the triggers are releases.

Follow your chosen one to Riverwood, sell your plunder in the store(s), and head up the path like you are going to Bleak Falls Barrow. Kill the bandits there and the ones outside of Bleak Falls Barrow. This will give you some experience. You can then sell that plunder. DO NOT buy spells from the court wizard, but from the people at the college cause they are a little cheaper.

I would put all my points into magicka, and forget about health and stamina. I would also go with destruction as your bread and butter, conjuration for helpers, illusion for frenzy, alchemy, enchanting and a little bit of sneak. I also understand that each person has there own way of playing, and these are just suggestions.

Then after you get to Whiterun take the carriage to Winterhold, and save before going up the ramp. You will be getting your first spell and if the spell is not to your liking you can reload and do it again.

Destruction - novice, dual casting, impact, apprentice, augumented flames 2, augumented frost 2 (for the fire dragons), adept, deep freeze, expert and master.

Illusion - all the spells but dual casting

Conjuration - just the main ones, like novice, apprentice, etc

Resteration - for the necromage perk

Sneak - stealth 1, and up the left side to silence (if you are going to sneak)

Hope this helps you out. Anything else you need, send me a pm (message) and I will try.

Ok, thank you so much. I have dragonborn, so I think I will try migrating perks from warrior skills to mage skills on my current character first, and if I'm still having a terrible time, I'll start a new character.

Been there, did that, done that. It does not work. It will take perks out of where you want them to leave, and you can put them in destruction, but if your destruction is only say 25, you can only put 2 perks into it, You health and stamina and magicka do not change.

Magic is hard when you're a low level, but once you start progressing, learn the good spells, increase your magicka pool and enchant your gear, you can become OP. Problem is, I've never had that much patience, so I'm not usually a full out mage.

But being a mage is such a challenge. I had trouble at first and then when a couple of friends helped me out, I had no problem. I only have problems with those dratted dragon priests. Sometime they can be a handful. I am talking about the ones for the mask quest.

Like I said, about the saving, and you will still have your warrior. If you need any other help, send me a pm. If nothing else, I know about being a destruction mage, and potions. (The potions I use) :D Have fun

It can be challenging, yes, but a lot of fun too!

I found it most difficult in the level 15-25 range, but it varies for everyone I'm sure.

There's a post http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1482616-mage-surviving-against-multiple-enemies/that a lot have given many very useful tips regarding mage use, in particular destruction magic use.

Perhaps it will help you out, I know it did myself.

Also, keep a record of the spells that you have. I hate it when I go to pay for one, only to discover that I already it.

If you are already high level then you should be able to purchase peerless magic school pieces to reduce your casting cost in a specific school to zero or enchant it yourself if you have 100 enchanting. This will get you over the problem of facing high level enemies with very little magica since you probably put most points into health n stamina. Now spam those spells at the enemy to level up and be sure to buy 5 levels of training every time you level up. Training magic schools from 15-50 is pretty cheap. When your magic isn't strong enough just fall back to your combat skills. It is easier for a fighter to pick up Mage skills at level 50 than it is for a Mage to pick up fighter skills.

True. But the op's problem is that at level 52 all his points are into health and / stamina and it will be extremely hard to start a mage at level 52 when all the enemies are going to be high ones, and one is using novice / apprentice spells.

I tried something like that with an archer and it was horrible.

Not necessarily. Since he is high level he should be able to get gear reducing cost to almost zero. He can begin ranged magic attacks or casting summons on powerful enemies and then finish the job with his combat skills until his magic levels up. Now if he is talking about tossing his weapons and wearing robes and only using magic then yeah there is no hope of surviving at that level. The only realistic way is to do the hybrid approach I mentioned.

Depends on what he want to do. Sounds like he wants to go full mage from warrior. Wants to transfer perks from warrior to mage. Will not work in that case. Battlemage will as you are saying, but not full mage.

This is what I'm doing, I have a level 30 Nord who was predominantly an archer with a 1h sword on backup that has no points in magic and no skill in any of the schools yet I'm slowly turning her into a frost mage conjurer type. She's wearing expert conjuration robes and enchanted jewelry that boosts magic (I've done no enchanting yet) so she has enough to cast bound bow or sword to utilize her skills in archery and one hand with frost destruction spells being fired in the mix....I keep a real sword on backup for now yet rarely need it as the enchanted gear gives me enough to be effective. It's hard to level up frost destruction so late in the game but I want to use frost as all of my mages use fire. I summon frost atronachs when I can as it fits in with both the conjurer and frost mage thing I'm working on.

I have to say that even though it's difficult to switch, I'm making it work by working with the tools I have and the large health pool helps greatly when you're a weak mage wearing robes and fighting tougher enemies.

This may be true, if we see our characters as nothing more than a "class." But if we roleplay characters, people, individuals with all the little idiosyncrasies and eccentricities people have in real life (which is what roleplaying means to me) then our characters are liable to be as changeable as we are. We see people in real life change careers; why can't we roleplay a character who changes also?
