My advice to starting a RPG serie

Post » Sat Jun 12, 2010 4:28 am

I've just finished watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qspeizoROps&feature=feedu and my impression is that its not going to be a very good game.
I started thinking how indie developers should present their games in order to gain some interest and i really think that if you want to start a RPG serie you must 1st think of building a interesting universe and a interesting character.
Like for example games like The Elder Scrolls, The Witcher, Mass Effect, they are developed around a certain universe and a interesting character. Many companies try to impress us with visuals and gameplay mechanics and forget that while thats all pretty and good you wont get my interest if the story is boring and feels generic. I mean.. i looked at that video and i saw some of the player characters and they just transmitted me "Boring Story" "Boring Character". I can't really help it.. maybe i'm being incredibly unfair but thats the feeling i got when i saw the video.
When i 1st saw the elder scrolls series i was really curious what this world was about, same with Mass Effect and The Witcher. They all turned out to be amazing games.

So my advice is... work on a plot 1st and then present us how the game works. Don't smack me with visual effects and hope that i will be amazed by the fact that you allow your character to transform enemys into.... trees?

Whats your opinion on this?

Sell out to the action game crowd=make lots of profit. That's all they really have to do unfortunately.

I can't tell anything from that video, to be honest. It's an action-RPG, so IMO it's not a story-focused RPG anyway...much as games like Diablo and Torchlight don't depend on good settings/stories. I'm reserving judgement on this game until it's released. It was developed by inXile, which is Brian Fargo's new company. For those not familiar with Brian Fargo, he founded Interplay and was the primary creator of the original Bard's Tale series as well as Wasteland, the precursor to Fallout. He was also executive producer on Fallout. He certainly has an impressive RPG pedigree, although I don't believe Demon's Forge is intended to be a "serious" RPG game.

Fun fact (to me, anyway): the character in my forum avatar is Faran Brygo, a character from Wasteland whose name is obviously a play on 'Brian Fargo.' :P
