Advice would be nice on a new build.

Hi. I am making a new build in Oblivion! I want to go the mage route. I was thinking about going Altmer race and going with the birthsign of Atronach. Is this a good combination? I've been wanting to play as Atronach for years, but have been scared silly over the no magicka regeneration. I would assume I have to rely on potions to restore? Apparantly Atronachs feed off of incoming spells, however most enemies I can think of use weapons, not magic. What would be a good way of countering the terrible drawback of the Atronach? Also, is the Altmer the best choice to use Atronach with?

Advice would be appreciated!

The last time I had a mage was a year and a half ago, and he was an Argonian.

Any race can play any class quite efficiently. Don't worry about it :]
The game's kinda broken in that regard, all characters turn into super heroes with maxed out everything.
You really have to go out of your way and restrict yourself to certain skills if you wanna be limited to your primary skills.

Well, ironically the Atronach works best for Fighters or Fighter-based Battlemages, since they don't rely on casting spells to do damage, and Atronach just lets them absorb mana to cast more spells. Finally, it makes it easier to get 100% Spell Absorption by endgame, which is basically broken against spellcasting enemies lol.

If you want, you can use Atronach with casters, but then you'll be relying on Alchemy and Welkynd's a LOT, as well as Telekinesis Exploitation and stuff. It's totally doable, but a bit annoying.

I would probably build something like this, which is what I did when I was doing an Atronach playthrough on Vanilla

Class: Adventurer
Race: Any (I was an Imperial cause I like Imperials )
Sign: Atronach
Specialization: Whatever
Attributes: Luck, Endurance
Skills for Roleplayer:
Blade
Block
Light Armor
Illusion
Sneak
Restoration
Player's Choice

Skills for Powerleveler (Endurance):
Blade
Light Armor
Sneak
Restoration
3 skills you won't use much (NOT any skill for Endurance)

Basically it's a typical Warrior/Thief/Mage affair, an adventurer that's light on his feet and uses Illusion and Restoration to get by when his strength fails.

I left Armorer and Heavy Armor minor for powerleveling Endurance. If you want you can make Block a minor too. Since you're an Atronach, it's pretty hard and pretty annoying to power-level Intelligence, so whatever.

If you're playing on PC, you should get a leveling mod like Simbacca or whatever, so you don't need to worry about powerleveling attributes. It's not a huge deal for Intelligence, but it's a pain for Endurance.

Thanks for the suggestions and comments. However, one thing is bugging me right now:Is there ANYWHERE in the game that replenishes all my magicka by activating?(not welkynd stones) Something similar to the Arena thing where you clean up? If so, I could bear the Atronach if such an object exists, but if I have to rely purely on alchemy and potions, then maybe I will not go Atronach but rather Apprentice or Mage because I want to go pure Mage.

First of all, what mods do you plan to use? If you're using the highly-recommended RBP, it basically nerfs non-mage Atronachs by giving a weakness to Normal Weapons. But gives you a power to regenerate mana...at the cost of some of your health, of course. Nothing is free.

As for the answer to your question, it is no. Not even sleeping or leveling up restores magicka.

Playing an Atronach is a very...different Oblivion experience. Playing a Mage Atronach in Vanilla is basically an exercise in maschism. Playing a Fighter or a Thief Atronach that specializes in fighting mages is a lot of fun though.

The Ayleid Wells scattered arround Cyrodill will restore 400 points of magicka once per day. Thats not bad seeing as you max out at 450.
