Advise on a new headset

Post » Thu Jan 16, 2014 8:28 am

I get to pick a new pair of headsets for my birthday, but I′m rather clueless about quality.

Price range is about 60-80 euros.

Main goal is for gaming on the PC, but being able to connect it to an MP3 player would be nice.

My PC uses onboard sound.

I was looking at the http://steelseries.com/products/audio/steelseries-siberia-v2-usb, since it had an external sound-card with it. But it costs just a bit more than I'm willing to spend, and I have no idea how good/bad an external sound card is.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Cheers,

Some games will balk at not seeing a sound card, but it maybe OK if it can see this through the USB. You would also have to disable the onboard sound chip in BIOS to make the system use the external. I doubt just making it the default playback would be enough. Do some research on this and games to see if anyone has issues with games.

However, almost any sound card would be better than on board sound chips.

I've used nothing but on board sound now since 2011. I haven't had an issue nor have I noticed any real differences with it. Then again, I'm not one of those audiophiles either.

May I suggest a pair of Turtle Beach X12's if you need a mic or if you want a higher quality headset without a mic you can go with a pair of Sennheiser headsets.
