Seriously, Afghanistan? i think I'd rather run along the Serbian border, dressed in an Albanian flag.

I admire your guts, but you're not ready for something like this. Leave for when you're 30-40 and considerably wiser.

I guess you don't want to go there for the Safavid architecture, but if that's the case, try Iran. It's bigger, more diverse and stable. (for now)

I wound up in Warsaw dressed entirely in an inappropriate uniform.

Warsaw is a nice place, we have, among other things, a castle, palaces, subway, many parks and long history (whole city rebuilt after being competely destroyed during WWII). I live here and it's for sure much safer place than Afghanistan ;)

If you could bring a gun with you I'd say go for it but you cant bring guns on an airplane, and I doubt the Afghan black market would sell a couple of AK's to someone who isnt Taliban. Also I dont think the local populace likes us non-Afghans very much so even if you dont get shot at the people will probably glare at you and it just won't be a fun time.

But if you're brave enough to go to Afghanistan in the first place you might as well go all the way and visit some war-torn areas. It would be super cool if you could tag along with some coalition soldiers on patrol and post pics/videos on here but if you ain't press they wont let you come with....will they?

No...it wouldn't been fun to tag along because an IED blowing your vehicles up or vaporizing the one in front of you isn't fun.

Not fun to us but might be fun to the OP since hes considering visiting Kabul for the heck of it, maybe he enjoys those things?

I can guarantee you won't find anything in Afghanistan except trouble. The fact that you're even considering going there shows how little research you've done on the region, and that will probably cost you your life. Don't do it. If you want to do something crazy, take up skydiving instead - it's safer.

I'm sure that this has been said before in this thread but;

If you plan to go to Afghanistan, watch out for the Taliban, they don't like people from "Western Countries".

Trust me, my ancestors tried to assault them in the 80s.

Why do you want to go to Afghanistan OP?

It's typically not a good idea to go into a war zone whether you are or are not going to be a target by whatever group. There are other areas you can go visit that aren't as hostile, I'd recommend going to those and then possibly when Afghanistan gets out of the war (if it ever happens in our lifetime) then go.

As great of an experience that this could potentially be, I would strongly advise against going. I used to volunteer with refugees doing ESL, so I learnt quite a bit from them (a lot were from Afghanistan) and it sounds horrible there. There's a very real chance of being held hostage, mugged, tortured, or even killed. The stories I heard from those refugees just made me cringe, so I would suggest staying away.

Whatever you do DON'T go for a run along that road, there's a good chance of something terrible happening.

Edit: Guys take it easy on him, he's pretty young.

I think holidaying in a place where there has been almost non stop conflict for well over a quarter of a century and no sign yet of it ever ceasing is a definite no-no.

If you wish to go somewhere in the middle east go to Bahrain, at least it isn't a warzone.

It's a shame that the middle-east is so dangerous, as there are TONS of interesting sights around that region of the world. :(

Plus their food looks delicious. :P

Is there any reason in particular you want to go there, instead of other places?

The really killer cave tours.
How many other tourist locations could have you stumble upon an illicit opium production or the skeleton of Osama bin Laden?
