Afghanistan

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:36 pm

Is there truly anything worth seeing in Afghanistan? I suppose this has been mentioned before in this thread but seriously, if the war went away, what would be left for tourism, if indeed any tourism could be sustained. The Taliban have destroyed a lot (and I mean a lot) of ancient relics and buildings in the country.

I want to go to Afghanistan, as I find the history and culture in that area of the world very appealing. However, I am not fool enough to actually go there - maybe it will be more stable when I am older (and I can actually afford to travel at will).

My advice? Visit somewhere safer, or if you do go, travel in a group. Remain in a group, and never walk alone, in the dark or outside the city.

I can't offer much more advice than what others have suggested, but I do know a couple who went there for a month and stayed with a local Afghan family who were very nice and pleasant. They had only one 'encounter' of any kind, and they were able to avoid it. The family they stayed with told them which areas of the city were more or less safe for them, and which of the areas to avoid at all cost.

They said they had a great time, but I guess some people can be lucky?

I think a holiday in Afghanistan would be really cool myself. It's a piece of history that's going on now and we can never know how soon it will be changed. I can't imagine it would be that dangerous for one day, and it would certainly be a dissapointing holiday if there wasn't some risked involved.

I'd prefer to go to North Korea myself though.

1) The OP wants to visit Afg
2) The OP wants thinks running along a nice street is "fun"
3) The OP just wants to zip in and zip out...like going to Wisconsin or Chechloslovakia ;) (it was a good movie up until that point)

Seems like the OP is either trolling, naive, or a peak-bagger/ticket-puncher/title-seeker. If the latter, I'd suggest running with he bulls.

To the OP, I haven't been there, but I'd sincerely hope you think about the effects of your actions upon others if your plans go wrong.

1) How could your death or kidnapping or other affect your family?
2) If you get kidnapped, how does that affect your family and those who would then need to fidn you? Including risking a life to find you?
3) Ther are still 2 of 3 hikers in Iran who thought hiking in a warzone was safe as well

Just trying to point out that one's actions has consequences upon other people....

You don't have to worry about every pile of rocks or pile of trash being a IED, people walking up with suicide vest and snipers in North Korea.

Though you do have to be concerned about, well, being trapped there forever. If you're not a journalist and weren't specifically allowed in... *shudder.*

I think it's funny that it's being assumed the OP is "very young" or "in his mid teens". He's not saying his family wants to go there. He said he wants to take a day trip. Now, I don't try to know how families are in Australia, but if I had said to my dad when I was a teen that I wanted to go some place like that, I'd have got laughed at and told to shut up and take out the trash and clean my room.

What the hell are you even thinking? It's a [censored] war zone. As has been stated.

If you wish to go somewhere in the middle east go to Bahrain, at least it isn't a warzone.

13 years ago I went to Colombia because I wanted someplace that was not a typical tourist desination, because of violence and kidnappings.
I was advised against it by friends. I bought a ticket anyway, and saw a notice that the U.S. wont bail me out if something bad happens to me.
It was an awesome experience, although there was potential danger to me, it made it all that more exciting.
There was murder at a club I attended. A bombing of a storefront for extortion reasons, at one point I was followed by some suspicious characters, and I almost got ran over by a car.
The police there are very professional though.
I didn't tell my mom about it until I got back.

What has that got to do with me not knowing much about the middle east?

I hear there is a region in the north that is better for tourism, or am I wrong...

I would think tourists are targeted especially..

Those road side IED's don't detonate for tourists. They are "aggro" only to US military.

I'd recommend "Coach Kabul" or "Greyhound Kandahar". I hear Osama might be a guest speaker sometime soon to let tourists see the fabled "dialysis machine" of his.

Hmmm.

OP, you actually asked if you can run from the airport to the city of kabul? Your plan is to fly in for 12hrs to visit? These questions make it apparent you haven't ever really traveled anywhere.

Your motivation for the trip is to go somewhere atypical for a holiday? And you have the type of disposable income to make a trip like this possible?

I'm calling B.S. on this thread. This is a joke or a very silly teen.

I kinda was feeling the same way. But then, this is how I was when I made my first trip overseas. Going into the unknown and all that. Was quite messy..

I do, but they're all loan words and relate to Russian firearms.

Thats true, I don't think the OP has to worry about IED's unless they are pressure plate triggered, otherwise an insurgent would rather wait to detonate one when a column of Coalition (not just U.S.) humvees rolls by. But the OP will have to watch out for everything else. I'm betting the Taliban would pay top dollar for a kidnapped westerner so even the majority of the local populace cant be trusted.

This isn't a troll thread...

I think I've come up with a better idea:
I'll stop over in Afghanistan for 3 hours on a connecting flight to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. While I'm in Afghanistan for 3 hours I'll jog down that straight road where there is a monument of an airplane, I'll take a picture of that, then maybe a jog a few 100 meters more. If I pass any newspaper stores/stands I'll purchase 1.

If you all look on Google Earth, and go to Kabul airport and look at the straight road coming from the terminal, you will see the monument.
