Afraid to buy game

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:20 am

I don't know about the rest of you guys but I'm afraid to but the game because of all the unresolved bugs with Elder Scrolls. I love the game and spent alot of time just getting my character just right and now I'm getting problems with game play. I can't get involved with a game that crashes and noone can fix it. What do you guys think?

What game are you referring to? Morrowind was absurdly buggy and Oblivion was almost as buggy, but this game runs on a new engine created from the ground up, while the former two games ran on Gamebryo (which is a terrible engine).

I'd say, bugs will persist (as they do in all games), but there'll be significantly less than in previous TES titles.

Get the game when it comes out. Any serious problems will probably be patched. Anyway, it seems like this is going to be Bethesda's crowning achievement. There's a good chance this will be relatively bug-free.

If the bugs bother you that much then you're better off not buying it.

That said I think that I speak for most of the rest of us when I say that the initial bugs aren't really that bad and the bug fixes released pretty much fix everything.

How do you know if there will be bugs that make this game unplayable? For all we know this game might be almost bugless. Just buy the game, and it happens to have a major bug, wait for the patch

I think I have a heavily modded Oblivion game that can run for hours without issue and have similarly never had a single crash on Morrowind. So personally this sounds like user error to me, and in the odd event that it isn't any and all bugs are usually on this thread, along with how to cope with or even fix them, long before you can even open up the game box.

Pesonally the only issue I ran into was the vampire glitch but I had the GOTY for PS3. The game may have froze on me every once in awhile after playing for many hours on end but I never seem to have all these horrible game breaking bugs people always talk about.......oh yeah the vampire thing I just played the rest of my game as a vampire.....no big deal.

NV did have a lot of bugs and glitches, but that was from obsidian
Fallout 3 greatly reduced the amount of crashes do to file corruption
Oblivion, wasn't really bad to start off with but it got worse
they have been getting better with the crashes and bugs, but if you are afraid get it for the PC, because you may be able to fix a few
it is a new engine so no one has any real idea how much bugs there are, it could be worse than NV or it could be completely flawless, just gonna have to wait and see

Most glitches and bugs was due to poor coding support by the Gamebryo engine. Having a new engine built and tailored to their needs and wants should ease these issue a lot!

It's fairly easy for folks who are worried about game bugs or anything else for that matter to wait until the game is released and reviews are out and you have read the forums.

I'm buying it regardless since I know they patch enough that I become satisfied in the end. Until that doesn't happen...I'm going to play day one if I can.

I'm prolly gonna pre-order. Only two or three games released this year that I want. Oblivion was good enough to pay full price for. If it svcks I'll see it here. Advantage of being a few days behind the US; y'all get to be the guinea pigs :chaos:

I`ll have no hesitation buying it. Oblivion, Morrowind, Daggerfall, Arena...bought and enjoyed them all for years.

What game do you mean and do you mean your game is crashing after installed mods? I rarely had any crashes with an unmodded Oblivion if that`s the game you mean.

To be honest a lot of games nowadays are released buggy. I bought Two Worlds 2 on the release day and 2 weeks later, I regretted buying it. Bugs, Smallish gameworld and pretty much a boring "RPG" under the pretty graphics.

I`m betting that Skyrim will be a great game and worth the money.

I'll pre-order it despite the fact it might be buggy, who cares... It's Elder Scrolls for gods sake!

You used the goty edition, which is comes with the latest official patch for Oblivion. It was more buggy when it was first released.

this, and really what do you have to lose if you bought a game with a few bugs in it? I probably played Oblivion for over 100 hours (completed the MQ six times), that was well worth the money

Totally understand your concerns wanted Fable 3 and Fallout New Vegas for ages read the reviews and will wait for patched GOTYs but this is anew Elder Scrolls Game. People have very high expectations of Bethesda, it's very unlikely they will drop the ball on this one

I'm not worried. I have ran into very few bugs with Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Fallout NV. The ones I did have, were easily fixed. (A major reason why I buy the PC version.)

There are a very few companies I'd drop my cash on sight unseen on release day, but Bethesda TES/Fallout series is the one major exception. I always buy their games on release day.

I think that people exaggerate a little bit when it comes to Bethesda games glitches.

I never experienced during my 20+ gameplays any game-breaking bug, or anything that would take out immersion or make the game less playable. Most of the glitches involved ragdolls and weird NPC behaviours or clipping, which never bothered me, and instead made me laugh out loud quite a few times.

I know the games have had bugs (none of which I have had to experience except the MW ctd) but your take on the issue, OP, is the first of its kind that I have seen.

I'm pretty sure it will be fine, relatively.

I'm not going to pre-order until I know what options I'm getting from Gamestop, Best Buy, etc...I've never pre-ordered a TES game before...I'll get it regardless of those incentives though...and i have high hopes that the bugs won't be a disappointment for me...I never had bugs at all in any of my TES games come to think of it...maybe some

I can't really say I really found any bugs in Morrowind in Oblivion that took away from the game experince.

It's been under development for a long time, I'm sure they've spent a lot of time testing the game. But I hope they continue releasing patches even after one year because, as a console user, there are some bugs still present in Oblivion. Like that woman in Leyawiin castle who stands on her chair and dies in a daedric quest. So I often ended up on UESP after every quest to check if I've done anything wrong... Please Bethesda, keep supporting your old games! The only patches for most bugs are unofficial and thus unavailable to console users.

I'm feeling pretty optimistic about bugs this time around, for a handful of reasons-

1) They've already got quite a lot of game, and there are still 10 months before Skyrim is released.
2) New engine* - any issues caused or worsened by Gamebryo have probably been addressed early in development.
3) Fallout: New Vegas had quite a few problems with bugs on release** - Bethesda are probably fully aware of the potential for negative publicity.
4) I'm an evil PC/mod user and I can hopefully fix most minor bugs myself.
5) I haven't had any serious problems with bugs in Morrowind or Oblivion.

*I know many bugs have nothing to do with Gamebryo.
**I know Obsidian developed it, but Bethesda published it and most people don't know the difference between Bethesda Softworks and Bethesda Game Studios.
