After Extensive playing, here is my Review/Opinion

Post » Fri Apr 15, 2011 9:45 pm

Okay, so I picked the game up on Tuesday, despite what the Reviews said (Don't listen to the SD Blog, they're only showing you the good reviews from sites I personally have never heard of. MSNBC? Really?) I picked up my copy of the game.

First thing I noticed is that I didn't get my pre-order bonus. Was the first time that'd happened to me, and I was kinda peeved.

Second thing I noticed was when I started a game... I found nobody online. Literally. Not a single person. It's been two days and I've only played games with other players twice, and both times the room was only half full. The AI on the bots is terrible. They don't cover you, do objectives, or anything besides take command posts. They have a huge tendency to bunch up, too, so 9/10 times I would either find no enemies or 6 of them at once.

SMART took a while for me to get down. In the heat of battle I found it incredibly hard to slide for whatever reason. I eventually found myself walking most paths the normal way unless I saw some of the bots climb up an area before me. The maps very clearly aren't designed with SMART in mind, with the exception of the maps they used to show SMART off.

The guns all feel the same, for the most part. And none of them feel... good. It's hard to explain, but when I shoot them it feels like I'm firing off some water guns at my friends at the park as opposed to fighting in a warzone. There's no good OOMPH from the guns, as opposed to most FPS that make you feel like you are indeed firing a dangerous weapon. This, in turn, means I got no overall satisfaction when I killed an enemy. Yes, you all know that feeling you sneak up behind a guy and unload on him or shoot him down by expertly strafing his bullets. Yeah, that feeling isn't there for some reason. The other guys feel more like obstacles than enemies. Especially Heavies, who tend to come to an enclosed spot (Like a doorway or tight hallway) and gun everyone in sight down, which brings you to your respawns, which can range from 1 second long to 20. Medics rarely actually come, and you'll be dead in such large groups that even if one does come he might run out of supplies before he gets to you. And dying can happen pretty randomly, too. I've had to wait 20 seconds to respawn a ridiculous amount of times.

Challenge rooms are not fun. At all. It pits you against both Resistance and Security as you try to do some mundane task. But you can play them with up to 3 friends, and it doesn't scale in difficulty, but chances are you don't have 3 friends who had 60 dollars to spend on this... I promised myself I wouldn't make jokes about the games quality. Luckily, when you beat an objective, you unlock an attachment that you can apply to every gun, and there really aren't that many. The customization also isn't very... good. You likely won't even notice what most of the people look like in game, and whenever you melee an incapped enemy his clothes just randomly... change. Even his face. It's weird. Also, if you want to change the color of an item you'd better pray they have it in one of the pre-set patterns that come with it, because if they don't you are SOL. Want that mask in green? You can have it, as long as you take it in camo. You like the pattern of the next pre-set option? Too bad it's in orange, your most hated color.

The abilities are just... ugh. Most of them are specific to one class or another, meaning you can't choose to specialize in one area or another. Well, I take that back, you can if you make several characters you can. I guess this is their way of trying to keep the replay value up? Unfortunately, it took me 2 days to max out two characters, so they didn't do too good of a job there.

The character animations are all, well... ugly. Enemies unrealistically fly when you melee or kill them. Oh, and if you want a good speed boost, aim at an ally and press the button to buff them. Your guy will practically fly at them in order to give them the buff. By far the best way to get around a map, since everyone is going to the exact same place anyways. This is also why I have such a hard time finding my way around the maps.

I'm not going to give the game a score, because I'm no journalist, but I am going to say that after two days I am taking it back to GameStop to get as much money back for it as I can before they realize how bad it's doing and drop the price. If you haven't bought it, I'd tell you to wait until it costs a 3rd of what it does now, and if you have bought it already chances are you feel exactly the same way I do.

Very well written personal opinion/review my friend. At least you took the time to detail what it is you don't like about the game other than saying it svcks.

I myself am enjoying the game. Sure there are some issues that need to be addressed that's for sure but I'm having fun with it none the less. In less than a month I'll be firing up my semi- realism gun and playing some Operation Flashpoint:Red River.

It's hard to express in words how much I dislike Call of Duty. That is one seriously annoying thing I hear from these forums. Fyi, the majority of the people I know who actually bought this game came from a game called Halo, of which you don't seem to know exist. Get the hell out of here with your stupid trolling "ooooh u liek CoD gtho we dun wunt ur kind 'round here neways" crap, because I don't need it. Call of Duty isn't the only game in existence, and it certainly isn't the best.

While I don't agree with you, I appreciate that you took the time to give your review/opinion in the way you did. You didn't trash talk and you appear to have given the game a chance.

Funny, I know people who couldn't stand to play Thief or Deus Ex, but those were two of my all-time favourite games. Meanwhile, I couldn't stand Quake, but loved BF2 (and BF1 for that matter). [Edit - I also completely disliked Halo after 2 hours of play]

I guess this game's just not for you. I wish you more luck with your next game choice -- what will that be, btw? Knowing that may give other readers some context of your game style interest.

Agreed and I commend you for that. I also applaud your candor. Because of it, I understand why you dislike the game. Your criteria vs mine will naturally be dif. But reading your impression on it has me anticipating Brink's gameplay even more. Thank you for your constructive criticism of the game.

In less than a month I'll be firing up my semi- realism gun and playing some Operation Flashpoint:Red River.

Keep hyping it and it'll be infested by noobs just like every other hyped game. ssshhh

Honestly, I love most shooters- of any kind. I enjoyed MW2, but when they got carried away with their Killstreaks and perks I was alienated. I loved every battlefield game to come out, even for PC. Gears 3 is one I look forward to, but the Gnasher is overpowered and I doubt I'll play it past the Single Player now. I'm hotly anticipating Rage and Gears 3. Halo is one of my most played games, as it requires the most strategy and skill to play, especially compared to tactical shooters.

Overall, I'm just a general FPS fanatic who isn't scared of 3rd person. If you're pondering buying the game and know that you have a passion for shooting games, Brink probably isn't for you.

Wow. I read this and wish you would actually play the game BEFORE you right a review. You did not play the game at all, thats what this entire post says. Yikes. Can't wait till all the people go away, who's main goal was to come here to hate on the game just because it tries to do something besides be a COD clone.

@ wolfnemesis I'd say he did "actually" play the game. Pre-order and 2 days later a review, he did a better job than most of the paid reviewers out there.

I most certainly did play the game before I wrote the review. You're just a blind idiot who refuses to accept that your game is anything but special. I don't even like CoD, and the main game I play is nothing like it itself. Grow some brain cells, bro.

It wasn't. I read my receipt word for word three times. It's good to know it was GameStop's error and not Splash Damage's, though.

Pre-order should have been on your receipt. I have no problem using my Doom Shirt and gun. And like the look of my character in the cutscenes. ;)

I joined this community before you did, tyvm, and I'm only hating on the people in it who hate on me.

I paid 60 bucks for a game that svcks and I'll be damned if I don't get at least a month of entertainment out of it, even if it means sticking around here and expressing my distaste.
