After a solid five hour playthrough, its like the veil has been lifted off my eyes. See, here's how I see it. When MW1 introduced prestige mode, the focus on skill and teamwork took a backseat to gaining XP. All these years later, we are like "Wow I don't have to obsess about lvling anymore?" and also "Hmmm so we just play the game just to play the game? Not for some pointless emblem?" Congrats everyone, Neo has been pulled out of the Matrix. I will go into detail later, but to be honest this is the most fulfilling gaming experience I have had in a very long time.
This is what I wanted to hear. When I think back over my favourite fps experiences (goldeneye, timesplitters etc) it was simply about having fun, playing for the sake of playing. We've got lost in a world where our every action needs rewarding, where we're always looking for the next goal to aim for, just one more level and I can unlock that weapon, that accessory. To what end though? Back in the day the tools were already there from day one, every weapon available for everyone. "Here's your toys, go have some fun". Now developers restrict these toys, they say "No you have to earn them, you have to keep playing our game" and we've become used to it, we've forgotten that it wasn't always that way.
So you can unlock everything in Brink within a day or so. And? Should we now stop playing because there's no carrot on the end of the stick? Or should we enjoy the freedom the tools at our disposal now give us and go out and enjoy ourselves?
