After long hiatus, back to Oblivion

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:19 am

I've been with Oblivion for a long time. The DVD in my drive is rated "Teen" and suffers from low level radial cracking. The "teen" scandal broke the weekend after I bought the game, and the radial cracking in the disc was an issue with earlier copies of the game. My old gaming rig with an 8800 GT literally fried a few days ago, so I upgraded to a gaming laptop. Specs are at the purchase link: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Laptop-Computers/Gaming-Laptops-Notebooks/pcmcat150700050002.c?id=pcmcat150700050002 I finally have a computer which can run oblivion at 40-60 FPS with the heavy duty texture mods, OBC, etc.

When I played, Oscuro's OO had just been released. Also, early releases of Deadly Reflex w/ primitive horse combat script were available. The mods blazed the trail for the amazing work that I imagine has been released snce Jan 1, 2008. Long time, no see.

Can anyone recommend some mods that have been released in the last 30 months which have been called "must haves?" My mods are from 2007 at the most recent. They are still fine add-ons (slof's horses, capes and cloaks, unique landscapes) I am looking for archery, magical, and clothing mods. Also interested in castles/real estate, involved quests, or anything...fun. A great story always commands my attention. Also, do we have a decent Kvatch mod?

Also, can my comp (Intel i7 quad core, mobile Radeon HD5870, 6 gigs RAM) handle the new visual mods such as "Almost everything viewable" etc?

I cannot wait to see what you guys come up with, given how much more skilled I imagine you collectively are.

My favorite quest mods:
http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3027
http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11598
http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=17781

All made by the same person, and all great quests. Ruin and TotF may have come out before you stopped playing, actually. Also:

Kvatch mod:
http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15412

Hopefully that gets you started.

http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1106890-the-unique-landscapes-project/ -Quite a few more than the last time you were here. :P

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/top/ - always a good place to have a look through for must haves.

http://www.oblivionsrealestate.com/ -want a home of any variety? Here's where to shop.

There are also a couple handy lists around here. I'll hunt them up and link them as well shortly, if the search function cooperates. XD

Edit: Here we go. Bookmark this. :P http://www.gamesas.com/?showtopic=1010109

Edit edit: You can also check the link in my sig for more humble homes. :whistling: Some goodies in there I think, but I'm biased.

Handily, if the mobile 5870 is even anywhere near as good as the desktop version. ;) Of course, desktops are always a hell of a lot better for gaming, dollar for dollar. But you should do OK, I imagine.

But the VWD mod you want, if any, is RAEVWD (Really Almost Everything...) Customisable, optimised, and just plain good. It's available at the usual places, I believe.

You could do worse than to scan the first, say, half a dozen (or even full dozen) pages of threads, keeping an eye out for "Rel" or "RELz" in particular. There's some really awesome stuff, right now. Then there are the "WiP" or "WiPz" threads, for works in progress - well worth checking some of those from time to time, to see how they're progressing.

tesnexus.com can be searched in a variety of ways. Not to say the Top 100 is necessarily a waste of time, mind you, but you could also, for example, search in a category of your choice, by download size, descending. Or whatever other criteria float your boat.

Lastly, if you like pretty (and is seems you do) then definitely at least give the Oblivion Graphics Extender [OBGE] (you'll spot it, if you do as above, re: thread-seeking) a cursory glance. But some of it would depend on how much you value having AA on. Personally, I'll take SSAO any day.

edit: Also, regarding DR (Deadly Reflex), there's a new version just around the corner - good timing! It'll apparently have fully working mounted combat, among (many) other things. Similar, but distinct, and also worth a look, is Unnecessary Violence, which - coincidentally? - is getting a brand new version very soon too. You can use the mods together, if you wish to.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=24312 was upgraded to 2.0. And there's also http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=16688, which makes a bunch of horse mods compatible with each other. There's also http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=27675 which gives the Slof's treatment to all horses in game. You'll probably find some updates for a lot of the other mods you had too. Kvatch Rebult is still the best mod for rebuilding Kvatch imho (mentioned already). And http://www.lostspires.com/ is a very good quest mod with a new guild for you to join.
