Age - body models and movement

Post » Fri May 28, 2010 10:05 pm

I hope they improve this in Skyrim

I had an extremely old High Elf Mage - and his face looked old and decrepid, yet he had a six pack and young looking skin. Also, he ran like a track star and could jump off of mountains like anybody else

I feel like age should effect movement and skin - (wrinkles and things of the such)

don't you agree?

Totally agree. And I think they've fixed it - look at the woman on the right of this http://uk.ps3.ign.com/dor/objects/93394/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/images/the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-20110415033055955.html;jsessionid=jgz3o6e0gfv1 You can tell she's quite old without really being able to make out her face too well. Definite improvement on Oblivion in that respect.

It seems like there will be a change in terms of looks so far.

As for movement...why would they limit your character? If you have a problem with your old looking character running like a trackstar, then why would you take athletics?

Realism isn't always a good thing. Raising your age meter shouldn't make you feeble. If you want to play a badass old man who fights dragons and runs like the wind, TES isn't the series to stop you.

Yeah, this is a good point. I hope they will change that in Skyrim.

And if the effects only appy to NPCs, that would really be a step forward.

TOTALLY AGREE

I thought they should play with skinny and fat characters too. You could create your character kind of skinny to actually make him look old. It would look more believable in many cases. NPCs with diferent ages, sizes and textures would be veery nice :P

It would add another depth of realism into the world. Hate in how in Oblivion there were these old men that said they couldnt fight anymore, but yet they had six packs and buff arms?

Because it would add to immersion, when old people walk really slowly and in a different way than a 200-pound muscled warrior in full armor. Also, when removing their armor, older enemies have a different body-type than younger ones. What I meant was that I believe that your character won't even have an age. Even if you make him look old, he will still behave like a 20 year old. Thats simply because everyone should have the same chances. It's what Todd Howard said:"In the beginning you only chose what your character looks like".

I can't really see movement being changed for player characters. Maybe for NPCs, but not PCs.

Imo, your character shouldn't age as quickly as they did in Oblivion, if at all

In Oblivion the age of NPCs varied a lot, so for them to all attack, move, carry armor, and hold a weapon different would factor in a lot of things and even if they spent the time on it would it be worth sacrificing game play on something else? I think body types should be adjustable from a Conan the barbarian to some one fat or some old wrinkly caster. However making it effect your movement again just adds more annoyance than immersion.

The problem with a game this big is people want so many things all of which cannot be done so they need to pick what is most important, to me adjusting your look should be very important but everything else is not worth the effort that may divert the designers from making additions on other things.

Why would anyone play as a decrepit old man? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of adventuring, leveling up, and getting stronger and more badass? I mean, all the quests are centered around being some sort of strong adventurer, hence the leveling component. It just doesn't make sense. If you wanted to be a weak old man with age appropriate animations, you couldn't leave cities and fight all the dangerous people and creatures, at least not very successfully, and you'd certainly want to avoid leveling as that would cause you to look like a young bad ass which you apparently want to avoid. Confusing topic. I can see wanting to be middle aged, but still in good shape though, which means old people animations would be a no, no.

I guess you could play an old thief or mage who avoids combat... I don't know. Don't think that's really what Bethesda or most people are shooting for though.

I definitely agree that NPC's should look and animate according to their age though. Adds a layer of complexity and believability.

I'd agree with that statement if it wasn't for athletics not being in the game...

But anyway, with different body types being a feature, I think that we can hope for your character's age impacting your body this time, but I wouldn't count on it effecting movement, not for the player, anyway, it's possible that older NPCs will get special NPC animations to reflect their older age, but older player characters will move normally, and to be fair, that's actually reasonable when you think about it, because I'm fairly certain that character age, if we can change it, will simply be a cosmetic choice, and I wouldn't want to be prevented from customizing my character's appearance how I want by having that choice cause gameplay effects I wouldn't want, and besides, if older characters actually had some penalties with movement (And having them have animations that make them look like they have trouble moving while in gameplay terms still being as fast and agile as younger characters would just look really stupid.), there would need to be some positive effect to balance it out, or no one would want to play old characters, and what kind of benefit would you give to playing an older character?

I think it would be pretty cool to walk with a cane or have a hunch back... although I could see how that might make fighting dragons a tad bit difficult, since hunching probably messes up your diaphragm.

I also don't think age (or body type) is going to change the player's movement speed. Especially moving with a cane would be way too slow for the player character, and there wouldn't be many good ways how to compensate for it.

Purposely crippling your character somehow with roleplay in mind is in my opinion a better option than increasing the difficulty setting. Sadly, I don't think Skyrim is going to include any build in ways how to do it (like adding Disadvantages in Daggerfall).

If you want to keep your character as slow as possible then simply don't increase your Stamina, and don't choose speed related Perks.

When I was in air force basic a 65 year old won the 5k 9/11 run he ran it it like 17 mins.

I think only the textures should be better I would like to keep my anims

don't you agree?

What if age effected archtypes? The younger you are, the better at stealth you are. Young but old to middle aged, your great with close combat as you have more developed muscles. The oldest setting would make you great with magic as your supposedly wiser.

Though I'm inclined to scrap my own idea because I love playing a mage that doesn't look an age over 30 and is just as talented as the oldest mage :P.....so back to square one :spotted owl:

As visual changes thats will be very welcome to has sets of different animations for elders, (as well for womens and mens and beasts, not elder movements just different animations sets), thats not real time aging thats will affect characters but more like visual improvements thats will make characters more living and less generic, changing statistic of NPC better tie to thats NPC not to his age.
