The Combat Demo Survival Guide. Definitely means they're close to releasing the combat demo. I wonder how many times I'll die. The testers had a VERY difficult time the first few tries, till you get used to it. It's still challenging then. :)

Good news. :)

I hope the combat sounds are there. Last thing I heard there were some problems with those and Vince stubbornly wants to release the demo this year, with or without sound. But I assume he figured it out.

Also we need more people posting in here. :P

Hey I like the fact that it's just me and you here. :P

I think the sounds are in.

EDIT: Vince just now:
I'm not teasing, just preparing for the release. Sounds are still being worked but the build I got on Sunday (Nick's a true patriot) was pretty good. Currently I'm making hosting arrangements. Our bandwidth is 5GB but I don't think it would last longer than 2-3 days (based on the video downloads and site stats).

We've promised you the demo before the end of the year and it's coming.

They are testing what seems to be the final demo build. That is, if everything goes to plan. If it's deemed good (this build that is), we'll see the combat demo in a few hours. I'll keep you updated.

Original download location doesn't work anymore. Mirrors:

http://www.filefront.com/15216873/AoD_demo.exe/

http://rs118.rapidshare.com/files/325928683/AoD_demo.exe
http://depositfiles.com/files/33jtci9g8

It's download at 200 kb/s on filefront which is alright. (180 MB file)

edit: So I tried it for a bit, and it's a bit buggy. When I tried to increase my dagger skill over 72 it jumps back to 60. But overall it's pretty fun.

Updated the download links. I've been playing for a while, had 2 minor issues, but everything's all right now. If anyone is testing it out, they should report any issues in the http://www.irontowerstudio.com/forum/index.php/board,14.0.htmlsub-forum.

EDIT: There are a couple of bugs and random crashing, they should be fixed soon.

My impressions:

  • The game looks good. I mean, real good. Didn't think it would so 'clean' and professional. http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/7181/screenshot23600001.png :) Beautiful aye?
  • I like the music, although it seems to end mid fight...I guess it's not long enough.
  • At 1680x1050, the font text is too small. I then tried setting it to lower resolutions, but the whole picture becomes a bit blurry, and I don't like that.
  • The dialogue window has two white empty boxes at the side, only seen when I play at 1680x1050 resolution.
  • The arena master crash, but you know about this.
  • I've played the game for a whole two hours just now, not one crash.
  • I was against those two Ordu fighters (bowman and the other guy), and on my 6th/7th/8th try (forgot which one, since I can't for the love of Christ kill them with my assassin), we started hitting ourselves. I attack, and then I get the damage myself. Or I dodge it. I can see the animations too. The information window states 'You hit Georges' message, which means I've hit myself.
  • Combat is fun and very fluid.
  • Wide variety of balanced armour (at least from what I can see).
  • This may or may not be due to my inability to play an assassin, but playing as a heavily armoured warrior seems to be much easier. I need to test this more though. Also, I get frustrated sometimes because my dagger rarely penetrates armour, unless it's a power attack. Otherwise I get the 'you dealt 0 damage, X was absorbed by the armour', X being the total amount of my attack.

Yeah I started out with a light armored dagger using character who was good at scoring critical hits, dodging attacks and using daggers, but it was MUCH easier when I played as a strong armoured warrior the second time.

Extract this file and overwrite the original .exe file, so as to remove the arena master crash.

I've won the demo once now, with a heavily armoured, sword wielding, critical happy guy. I'm trying it with an assassin now.

The demo was downloaded 3500 times these past few days. :)

I completely forgot that the combat demo was coming out around Christmas! I'll have to download it later when I can get on my PC.

Finished the demo as an assassin now. ^_^ The last fight (not in the arena ;)) was very satisfying with my dagger/dodge build.

Just got the demo and attempted playing it until the computer decided to crap its pants and explode over the game. The weirdest thing happened; the program kept being removed from Task Manager then being put on again and the monitor kept losing signal. Before I knew it, ATi was asking me to send an error report. All for that? Craziness.

Looks good, though. Hopefully it'll be less buggy in the future.

If the problem persists, post in here: http://www.irontowerstudio.com/forum/index.php/topic,1215.0.html

Some of the bugs have already been identified. Also, download the fix I provided in the first post.

New demo version released. Save games are compatible.

http://www.irontowerstudio.com/forum/index.php/topic,1259.0.html

Fixed bugs and technical issues:

- Fixed: "Closed off buildings when the game is loaded."
- Fixed: "Can move through NPCs."
- Combat sounds do not fade so much with distance.
- Disabled streaming music, it's all preloaded now. Those of you who had problems with music getting messed up, tell me how it works in a new build.
- Moved scrrenshots and console.log to My Documents\My Games\Age of Decadence, so they can be created even if you don't run admin account.
- Now you can't save a game when your character is dead.
- Death screen appearing after you die and quickly load a game: no more.
- Fixed: "Arena master crash". Which meant potential crash on any dialogue initiation.
- Fixed: "You can extend your spear interrupt range by selecting a whirlwind attack before ending your turn. I believe it's an exploit."
- Equipping something while moving made character continue his path as a statue [wrong animation was played].
- Fixed: clicking dialogue answer could lead to a wrong outcome (problem with hidden answers, when your character didn't pass skill/stat/script check.
- Fixed error loading a saved game, if you saved it while your character was moving (to the last tile of his/her path?)
- Now crossbows are not getting unloaded when dropped into inventory.
- Found a solution for ATI videocard owners (X-series) who experienced visual artifacts.
- Fixed "Characters attack and hurt themselves or wrong targets" bug.
- Fixed a bug with loading a save game, when user gets a normal loading screen at first, but when the SVGA progress bar reaches the end the game "hangs", though gameworld sounds are heard.
- Fixed: "Combat goes into an endless loop after a character disengages from an opponent."
- Fixed throwing axes float in the air, while character walks.
- You could totally avoid combat in this combat demo :) (bug with arena exits)
- Spaces between some dialogue asnwers were too large.
- Fixed a bug when you could initiate a conversation in movement and still keep walking somewhere.
- Added "1", "2", "3" keys as alternative shortcuts to attack modes (fast, normal, power).
- Fixed duplicate citizen.
- Replaced bum which gave SP.
- Fixed going through the doors of the Assassin's Guild.
- Fixed: "Characters attack through the walls".
- Fixed typo in some ending screens.

Visual:

- Made minor improvements to several GUI screens.
- Added red as a hair/beard color.

Gameplay:

- Added ranged weapons to the imperial guards.
- Changed price modifier for metal upgrades.
- Improved synergy bonus.
- Added passability in certain places were it made sense.
- Changed the critical multiplier.

//=== Known Issues ===//

Things that we know about and going to fix in the nearest future:

- D3D video mode is unstable for some users. Try to use OpenGL when possible;
- Music is cut off instead of being faded;
- No F1 readme. We strongly suggest to read the readme on our forums - http://www.irontowerstudio.com/forum/index.php/topic,1208.0.html
- Configuration files are saved to your local game subfolders, which may cause filesystem permission problems, if you're not running the admin account;
- Getting attacked by a ranged opponent from a diagonally adjacent square sometimes results in your character spinning around and turning his/her back on the attacker;
- Minor glitches selling ammo/other stacked items;
- When looting you have to click on the tile where the dead character stood when you killed him/her to be able to open the looting screen;.

Looks like all the issues I found with the first version of the demo have been fixed now. Great! :)

I've subscribed to the RSS feed of the Iron Tower Twitter page so I'm always getting the news right away, which is nice.
