The Age of Decadence is an isometric, turn-based, single-player 3D role-playing game set in a low magic, post-apocalyptic fantasy world, inspired by the fall of the Roman Empire. The game features a detailed skill-based character system, non-linear gameplay, multiple skill-based ways to handle quests, choices & consequences, and extensive dialogue trees.

I have to say these are http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/3218/cado.jpg of the http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/6804/neleos.jpg http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/7603/antidas2.jpg I've http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/9499/temp01bx.jpg in a game.

Looking really forward to this indie game, it has everything I want in an RPG, particularly because the devs have listened to the more hardcoe RPG fans, which means their fanbase is quite 'small', just a few thousands. Which means it will be the first game I'm going to preorder ;)

They also have four other games in mind, but Age of Decadence will be their first one released. Combat Demo should be out this year.

Other ITS games:

Cyclopean

A game still in Pre-Production and highly inspired by Lovecraft, for all you Lovecraft fans ;)

Scars of War

Recently Iron Tower Studios teamed up with Gareth, a big Elder Scrolls fan (particularly Morrowind), who is also creating a game strongly inspired by Morrowind, so all you (and me) Morrowind fans should take a look at it :) No screenshots though as he's just transferred everything to a better game engine. He has been working on Scars of War for a number of years, till he pooled his resources with ITS. Still working on the game on his own, but he's also part of ITS.

An example of the many choices you can make:

http://img40.imageshack.us/i/53104618.jpg/
"You've killed Carbo" The captain says as an explanation. "The boys here have a problem with that."

1. "It was a fair fight".
"Can't expect to fight only fair fights if you make a living killing folk, can you?" The guards draw their weapons.

2. ...
3. ...
4. [trading] ...
5. [persuasion] ...
6. [body count] ...

The graphics look sharp, eh? You look at it and you wanna start planning the fight right away. Alternatively, you can jump out of that window, if you have something against 6:1 odds.

It looks very interesting, but when the combat demo is scheduled for release in late 2012, I think it's not something to hold your breath over yet. Still looking forward to it though. Haven't seen a game quite like this in several years.

Yeah, I've been following this game for some time, as well. But like as has been said - I'm not going to be holding my breath. That's kind of the downside of indie games like this - it can take awhile when there's only a handful of people working on it, part-time. :)

Does look very awesome, though.

Why is it not isometric? I think the developers and a very hardcoe fanbase would know how to define the game's camera...

It is isometric.

What would you call the camera then?

"Isometric" is one of those words that doesn't mean what it used to originally. The "real" definition of isometric refers to the projection used in 2-D overhead games to give a sense of depth within constrained parameters. "Isometric" actually refers to how the geometry is represented - it has usage outside of videogames: drafting and architecture, for instance. (It's hard to explain without pictures...)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Axonometric_projections.png is a relatively useful example. If you want to get really technical, most of the games that get labelled isometric are actually trimetric. (Fallout, Diablo, Simcity, etc, are trimetric projections - check the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_games_with_isometric_graphics for a better description than I'd be able to give, here.

Back to the point - these days "isometric" is an accepted terminology for the camera angle a game is played at. In that usage, it has nothing at all to do with the graphical projection of the geometries represented on-screen. (I think most people who say "it's not really isometric" are often themselves misunderstanding what it actually is.) Age of Decadence has the same virual camera angle that you'd find in a game like Fallout, etc.

But to get technical again - it's a fully 3D environment, it uses perspective projection to render it's in-game geometries. (ie, what you would see in the real world - like a line of train tracks stretching out into the distance.) At least as far as I can tell. (Such as http://www.irontowerstudio.com/images/index_tower.jpg, where where all the vertical objects, if you were to extend their lines, would converge at some imaginary point - which, by definition, makes it a perspective projection.) So - true, it's not "technically" isometric, as it's actually 3D, but the term - as it applies to videogames - doesn't mean what it means in other usages such as drafting.

So, Age of Decadence isn't technically isometric (because that refers to how the geometry is rendered, and not the camera angle,) but neither are what most people generally assume to be isometric games, either. Q-Bert is isometric, Fallout 1 was trimetric. :)

I see, thanks for the explanation.

So if we go with the definition most people use, AoD is isometric, though technically it would be incorrect.

Long story short, yes. :)

This isn't something new, either - people have been calling games isometric when they really weren't since the 80's at the very least. It's just quicker to say "isometric" than "3/4 overhead view." This isn't something that only started happening when games went 3D.

Well some of my favourite games are isometric, but this camera angle isn't my favourite. But, it's just that - a camera angle. The gameplay is nearly too good to be true, but from what I've seen, it is true.

Long story short, yes. :)

No prob. I just cracks me up that a lot of people who say it's the wrong word don't often understand that even what they think of as isometric - really isn't. :)

I've been somewhat following this game. I like the back story, because I'm interested in the collapse of empires. Hopefully production may speed up.

Those portraits are looking very nice, as well. If they hadn't been saying otherwise, I'd still think they were painted over actual photos. (That's not a rip, either - I have an art background myself; the end result is the only thing that really matters...)

I had completely forgotten about this. :( Still, I was very antsy for a demo back when I first learned of it. Seems like it might be worth my money. I've actually having a *good* feeling about this game, instead of the usual everyday dread.

EDIT:

Now I've got it- the portraits! They remind me of Jagged Alliance 2! :D

Really looking forward to it. It's been a while since we haven't seen a hardcoe RPG for the PC so color me excited.

They're taking their time though... But hey, if they're pre-producing another project, AoD must be close to an end, no? I mean, I certainly would throw all my energy in a single project, unless it is very close to release.

I'm tentatively looking forward to this. The developers seem to be pretty dedicated to making an RPG which is focused on meaningful choices and consequences (I really hate that phrase), and considering how mediocre even the most shining examples in the genre have been (even Fallout is highly overrated in that department), the prospect of getting to play a game in which the player's choices have a significant impact on the way that the game proceeds is pretty enticing.

The only major worry I have at this point is that only the PC will be under the control of the player; no controllable party members will be available. I suppose that VD might be trying to emulate the style of Fallout with this design choice, but only being able to control the actions of one character limits the tactical depth of fights. There weren't exactly a lot of fights in Fallout which didn't consist of "shoot enemy in the head -> get shot -> spam stimpacks -> repeat until you win."

Looks fun, but when does it come out?

I'll avoid making the obvious in-joke. It'll come out when it's done, which is a highly amorphous date. I've been following AoD for several years now, and it's always "almost done." To be honest, I wouldn't expect to see it for at least another year, possibly two. The people making it are dedicated and pretty good at what they're doing, but they're hindered by the fact that there are only three of them (at least I think there're only three).

The FAQs is from 2007, wow.

Is that the one from Jedi_Learner? It'll be pretty outdated, I think, especially if JL had one of his bi-polar moments and [censored] around with it.

Yep, they're still a 3 man job working on the game, with another guy doing the portraits and someone else who will work on the music.

I think we might see the game in Summer 2010, but that's just what I think from the progress speed I've seen in the past year.

Nami the FAQ was created in 2007 but it's been updated this April.

That reminds me, does anyone know who's doing those as of yet? They're quite possibly the best I've ever seen, even better than those in the IE games.
