Ahh, I remember now why I love Morrowind so much

Post » Thu Sep 24, 2009 2:34 pm

I'm playing through it again. I am playing vanilla except using MGE for a graphical update. Wow it's like a whole new game! I had basically patched the entire view of the world together in my head over the years from the little bits I could see of the fog. Now being able able to see everything is breathtaking! Ald Ruhn is beautiful, always a favorite town of mine because of the proximity of the mages guild teleporter and the silt strider. The view of Red Mountain is awesome! Walking around the northern regions next to shore is nice as well. I am only playing the mages guild and main quest this time around so I don't sink too many hours into it. My plans are to hit up Oblivion again next and I am just as excited!

This has been a good year to be a TES fan.

I just started my first-ever thief character. I'm still in Seyda Neen and already I'm seeing things I've never seen before. I picked the lock of the Census warehouse and - lo and behold! - I discover two NPCs walking around in there that I never knew existed. After that I broke into Fargoth's house. I've never seen the interior of his house either. It amazes me that these things have been in the game all this time and I've never seen them. It feels as though the game has suddenly gotten much larger.

I can't wait to break into all the buildings in the game now and see all the interiors I've missed all these years. ;)

Yeah, I love the way the world feels differnet depending on what sort of character you play. I once spent an entire RP stuck on Dagon Fel.

It was two years of playing before I entered the Puzzle Canols.

Morrowind is great. Even the Vanilla version has endless possibilities. After many hours on Morrowind and many hours on Oblivion I can fairly say Morrowind > Oblivion.
Other than the graphics and the voice acting Morrowind is a much better game, and I could care less about graphic (I still play games from the 90s) and voice acting is cool (especially when it is convincing, and I will give props that the Oblivion voice acting is excellent) but I don't mind reading. And the expansions to Morrowind add even more possibilities, I could probably spend days just just doing everything in Mournhold.

well, nothing new or exciting found in the last day or so, I've not done as much exploring as I'd like, been busy doing thieves guild(which, actually, is new and exciting for me, i've never done it before) quests. Unfortunately(or fortunately, however you look at it), current one requires me opening up a 75 level lock and I can't do that yet, so I'm going to have to take a break and do some other stuff for a bit ^^

I don't recall ever entering any building in Vos other than the temple once or twice. :P

Not that there's much to see there.

I still have so much to do and explore.

I remember putting in 300+ hours or so and I only did half of Morrowind, it is that long of a gameplay and exploring experience.

I stumbled across Denstagmer's Ring for the first time today......simply because I saw a tomb and decided to check it out.

Its little discoveries like that, that keep me coming back ot Morrowind.

and since all this skyrim furore, I've been contemplating having another go at morrowind.

I am about to begin my first-ever playthrough, as soon as the game disc I have ordered arrives. Got started with Oblivion, but look forward to exploring another world before Skyrim arrives.

Anyone else that has recently returned to morrowind and discovered something new, or realized that the game has aged pretty damn gracefully?

I did start a new game this weekend. last time I finished it was 2009 or 2010. I'm amazed by the mood the whole setting brings up. For example I like to stay and rest for a while at the bitter coast on a clear day. And it's always fun to read the books, too.

Since Morrowind is pretty big it will take some time to go through all the quests. I want to level up as much as I can with the regular game and the official addons. I remember one of my former games when I had finished nearly everything and was around level 66. That was nice.

I came across a new dungeon the other day, and it was very neat. It was a place like the Tower of Dusk/Dawn(Ghostgate Fence), but there were several bodies lying on the floor, and about 4-5 guys who attacked me on sight. When I killed the last one, he had a note saying that their mission had been accomplished(killing the occupants who had been sorcerers), but they had taken heavy losses. I found this particularly interesting, because I recall having a conversation with a completely random NPC in which he told me he saw several Telvanni mercs being dropped off in the middle of nowhere, and he had speculated they were establishing a fortress. He was close, they were taking one over instead, but I was amazed that what had seemed like completely useless, random speculation actually turned out to be true.

Currently Captain rank in thieves guild, which is cool. Some of the awesome quests I've gotten to do so far...very neat. I also started doing mage guild quests, am currently a warlock, going for wizard rank, lol. Since I use Illusion and Alchemy on my thief as main skills, I figured he was qualified enough. I'm not going to take over the mages guild though, it would be to wierd.

Contemplating starting up a Priest type character(Blunt, Block, Medium Armor, Restoration, Alteration, Mysticism, then Long Blade, Speechcraft, Mercantile, Destruction, and the other two skills I haven't decided on yet), so I can do the Imperial Cult and Temple Quests(never done either of those storylines, ever). I envision him as a Tomb Clearer that is always willing to help people, no matter the cost to his own life.

Hah, reading about all these accounts makes me so nostalgic. I decided to reinstall Morrowind yesterday, as it is (personally) the best TES so far. Don't get me wrong, Oblivion was great, but it didn't have the same appeal as Morrowind's story/ambience etc. What gets me though, is how endearing it is just to start off in Seyda Neen. I love that place. Firstly, great sense of freedom, mystery and potential, as you step off that boat, bewildered by your current situation. But quickly you realise that you have (by the grace of Uriel Septim) been given the chance to live your own life.

On previous run-throughs, I would race past the 'small time' quests (ie, the Murder of Vitellius), and head straight to Balmora, but lately I've started to enjoy the appropriate ease of difficulty these beginning quests in Seyda Neen present to the fresh-off-the-boat adventurer. This round, I took my time exploring Seyda Neen. All those quests I had brushed off earlier - what a shame! Returning Fargoth's ring, for a slight disposition increase at Arielle's Tradehouse (better prices for the new adventurer), finding Fargoth's hiding place, stealing back the ring I'd just returned to him (svcker), and splitting the cash with that Nord in the tavern, solving the murder of the tax man and returning his ring to his love, giving a hundred septims to Vodunius Nuccius so that he may escape his run of bad luck on Morrowind, and finally taking care of the bandit cave just North of the small settlement. Also, for those of you who didn't know, outside the lighthouse, next to the boardwalk in a tree stump is some gold and a goblet, and a few metres off, another tree stump with an enchanted axe (equalling 100gp). By the end of it all, some 1400gp. Not bad.

--Morrowind, you never cease to surprise me.--

The replayability of this game is wicked. Traditionally, I'd go for the lightly armoured, yet lethal class of a swords expert, rounded out with some decent magic and excellent stealth abilites. This time though, I'll take a step back from my usual instant progression of no0b to L337 (by rather hastily (and gameplay-killingly) completing the Lady's Ring quest, and then easily murdering llaro Llethri at the Dren Plantation for his Daedric Dai-Katana, which at Level 2 or so, is a bit unfair to all the enemies of the Nerervarine). No, this time, after meeting up with good old Caius Cosades, I'll take my time. Join the Fighter's Guild, get some income, level up my Long Blade and Heavy Armor, explore, build a reputation and some core skills.

Personally, I like to become head of all four guilds, plus either House Hlaalu or Redoran (still undecided, any opinions?), then complete the Main quest. Bit of a completionist. Plus having a stronghold is awesome, setting out all your high end gear is immensely satisfying.

I'm doing something similar. I've played hundreds of hours of both Morrowind and Oblivion and I'm now getting Daggerfall, as I want a new world to play through before TES V arrives. :)

Ahh, so many new Dungeons found today/last night. Not a lot of cool loot, but I did find two Daedric Shrines and a Dwemer Stronghold that I've never seen before, they were all close to each other on this tiny series of Islands near Gnaar Mok. I never thought to explore them before, the islands basically just looked like specs on the map, didn't seem like it would be worth it to explore, but I was bored, and wow, I was well rewarded! Got two daedric daggers, so I was happy about that, Enchanted them both with Poison and Fire respectively. Oh, also, an Ebony Shortsword that I'll enchant once I find an Absorb Health spell. Some more bandit caves, I've now freed enough prisoners that they gave me something about Twin Lamps and a code phrase, I've never even heard of this before, very interesting stuff! I really need to go through one of the House storylines, I reaaaallly need a place to store my cool, unique loot! Driving me nuts putting in Caius' place.

Yeah, it's amazing how many surprises the old game still holds. Last time I played I was amazed to find a new potion in Addamasartus (the Seyda Neen smugglers cave). It wasn't a particularly valuable or useful potion, but the fact that I'd cleared the cave dozens of times before and never noticed this struck me in a rather profound way. I'll never know everything about Morrowind. If I ever do, it just wont be the same game any more.

Just some tips to keep in mind while exploring caves and such:
Always explore the waterways in caves---many have underwater passages that lead to otherwise inaccessable areas not to mention the many items you can find in the water itself
Always look behind pillars and such. I have found several chests and things that were just out of sight behind a stalagmite.
Always look up---a couple cave have areas that you can only explore if you can levitate.
And always check the floor---in some caves there might be coins or items on the floor hidden amongst a cluster of mushrooms.

Recently I found a cave that had a water tunnel that led to an open area with nothing in it...until I looked up and found a couple of stalagtites that had diamonds in them. I think I got 6 diamonds.

Something else that I do to help me know where I have been is to write cleared next to the entrance on the local map and I also place a lit torch on the outside of the cave entrance. Both tell me that I have emptied the place.

While outside and if you can easily use levitation check out treestumps. (look down into them) I have also found a few sacks of stuff amongst the bushes here and there.

he looked behind one of those chests in the 6th house base and there were artifact gloves :o

Another was when I was just messing around in the Imperial Legion, I opened some trapdoor and found
Spoiler

Found a glass Tower shield in Hlaalu Vaults in Vivec. hell, I never even knew they had a vault there! So much nice stuff....If only I had more room, I'd have robbed them blind of everything.

Some more nice Dungeons. Have started using throwing Knives and Stars, thats pretty fun ^^. Found 3 new quests in Mournhold that I never did before.

Having such a blast with all this, lol. Not sure if I want to start another character yet, having so much fun on my thief ^^

I've had Morrowind for a long time as well, but stopped playing many years ago(Completed main quest only). A few days ago, I decided to re-install it with just 4 well picked mods. And really, it's fantastic fun. I am an extreme novice compared to most everyone here prob, so a lot is unexplored still. Also it will be very difficult to play Oblivion while playing or after playing Morrowind, as Morrowind seems more interesting to me. It's a great game for me to play just a few minutes here and there, hopefully remembering where I left off.

Voxxjin, how do you do this? Are you able to actually put labels on your local map ingame (or is it a mod)?

And was this near Seyda Neen? =]

Joined the Imperial Legion last night, so much fun. Love starting off with the barest amount of armor then acquiring the rest as you are promoted. And helped Hentus get his pants back from Hainab. Also started the Mages Guild. Good times.

On joining Great Houses, what's everyone's preference?
