I find (when the game is functional) both the Wiimote and PS3 Move to be superior to the Mouse in many ways, it's only a matter of time before they're perfected.
That said, I can play with dual thumbsticks just fine and hate aim assist, particularly in competetive shooters.
I do not think they are superior but are definitely a viable alternative to the controller. If sony eventually comes up with a compact solution that I can use on a computer monitor from my desk while sitting I will use it over the controller. Although I am not sure this would work.
I have played many games on the 360 as well as on the PC and overall I really do not feel that controllers are an intuitive solution to console gaming. An individual can pick up a m/kb on a PC and be adept at aiming in a game but if you give that same person a controller they will not do as well because they are not as easy to use. The learning curve is high with controllers when compared to a m/kb setup.
This why you see people creating devices that allow users to use a m/kb setup on a PS3 or 360, a mouse gives the person the precision and stable accuracy that you need.
Wow you PC gamers are funny. First off you don't need a new controller to aim good you just need a good aiming system in a game, RTCW for Xbox had no auto aim and people where great at it and they could drop you guys with 2 shots. Console gamers do not need auto aim to aim good its the PC gamers who have trouble when they pick up a controller so they need help. Trust me when i say there is not one Pro or competitive gamer on the console that likes auto aim plenty of games have done it with no aim assists. Its up to the Dev to make a good game. The OP is wrong the game will not sell better if it has aim assist.
What you have just stated is my argument why we need a better controller. Aim assistance is built into console games because of the deficiencies of the controller. Developers noted that for the average users playing shooters it was difficult to aim with the controller. Thus, they have introduced anything from dead zones (which are often customized for different games) and subtle auto-aim so that you can actually track a target.
With a controller with auto-aim off it is difficult to track a moving target when you are standing still. This is a problem that needs to be fixed so that future console games do not need to have aim assistance.
