Do Airport even exist in Fallout series?

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 5:29 am

After combing the desert of the DC wasteland there is not even one airport in the game? Now of course someone could say "well the developer didn't have time to put it in", but looking at it at a cultural stand point maybe the people of Fallout didn't really use airplanes. It would kinda make sense, since their main focus on nuclear power that the aerospace front was over looked .

Theres an aircraft carrier... full of airplanes.

I think your theory has a few holes.

They just didn't put an airport in.

Of course there were airplanes in pre-war times o.o Now of course they've been converted into nuclear ash, and those airports/planes that did make it, people scavenged the materials to build settlements.

Find Manya in Megaton and ask her about the history of Megaton. She mentions an airport as a place that the settlers got all the pieces of scrap to build there houses.

Probably an oversite. They should have had Dulles and have it nuked. Thats what would have happened for sure. probably just ran out of time. Nuclear drives for planes were developed but never used in this country. There was a nuclear powered varaiant of the B-36 bomber but it was never fully tested but the the reactor and the engines were fully tested and did work. So there should definitely be at least the one airport and some wreckage from nuclear powered planes. It is possible that before the great holocaust that civilian air travel was stopped but that would not explain the lack of airports.

Yeah i also found this weird, considering that the Ronald Reagan Airport is like 4 miles from downtown DC.

Yes I am aware of Megaton being made out of airplanes and Rivet City being a aircraft carriers but that is for military purposes, not for the private sector. Now Megaton would be debating given if the airplane was from the private sector or not.

That is pretty interesting and would fit the Fallout series if the US military went with nuclear power B-36.

Yes exactly my point, but oh well.

I was actually expecting to see some kind of easter egg connection megaton to the downed air plane in Mad Max Beyong The Thunderdome. Maybe the painting of Cpt. Blake (was that his name) that was in the movies since Fallout seems to have tons of inspiration from the Mad Max world.

What also might be cool is some refference to other cold war planes and weapons. Maybe a crashed YB-49 flying wing. You could find the Body of the late Capt Edwards and find a map to a secret testing facility. Also in the late 50's early 60's there was a lot of research done on nuclear powered rockets. They had developed many working engines. So maybe a crashed nuclear rocket or Test site?

Just talk to megaton's village elder she defiantly says something about flying busses in the sky, I assume this means Airplanes, I could think it might be zeppelins, but since there is a aircraft carrier, I suppose there also where commercial aircraft liners.

Huh? Zeppelins? Manya definitely says the planes at the airport were scavenged and brought back to Megaton. Take a look at the town. The cut up sections of commercial airliners are pretty obvious..

Well, Where are the airports? Its been pretty well established that There were airplanes both commercial and military. You find military planes in Rivet city and Megaton is made from a comercial airliner, but where are the damned Airports? One of the biggest airports in the countrey is in washington. Ronald Reagan INT which used to be Dulles INT.

Manya also says that there is no remaining trace of the airport, and that you cannot even tell where it was now. I would assume that this was probably Dulles airport. The devs having Manya say there's no remaining trace is just a way to explain that they either ran out of time or perhaps had made an airport and deleted it from the final game. I just read somewhere recently that Fallout 3 was originally 2 times as big as it now is, and that some of the devs were really bummed about so much of their work being left out of the game..

Well, of course it doesn't; transistors were never invented in the Fallout universe therefore http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirPort was never created.
