Akavir katana wakizashi and tonto

Post » Fri Jun 24, 2011 7:52 pm

In the elder scrolls there have been katanas in all the games. the trend seems to be that the farther north you are the more likely you are to find one.in oblivon bruma was one of the garented places to find one cloud ruler temple was another and pail pass was another. in morrowind there where plenty of katanas. I personally found two whole sets of dadric blades. I only found 1 set of steel ones and I don’t know how many other types there where. I was disappointed to find that in oblivion there was only one type of katana that was un enchanted And only two that where legendary artefacts. And after doing some in game research. I found that the reason for this was. That the Akavir invaded threw sky rim and most of the battles where fought in skyrim and morrowind. So I naturally the more northern provinces weapons where more influenced by the Akavir. So I would assume by all the lore I have read that skyrim will have more katanas made from more materials then where in oblivion and morrowind combined. And im wondering if anybody has a reason for the katanas and other Akavir blades to be less then previous games?

I think oblivion was going for a "pure European fantasy" or soemthing. I do hope to see a wider variety of akaviri style weapons.

Seriously, THIS. I expect all of these weapons to make a triumphant return, and I wanted to do the exact same combo as this guy/gal.

@elder-awesome: Because Vvardenfell is closer to Akavir. Akavir is east of Tamriel (read: Cyrodiil*Morrowind*ocean*Akavir. North is ^^^ that way)

I also hope to see this. As much as I love the European fantasy, I think the addition of katanas and some Asian themed architecture and items adds another dimension to gameplay that is totally rewarding.

Which is the general D&D fantasy. As an RPG Oblivion can't be said to -not- be one. Bethesda Game Studios wanted a more traditional fantasy experience so they did.

This also reflected in the culture as Cyrodiil is a capital melting pot. In such places usually ones culture is put on the back-end(Even if they say you can bring it. Major example being the U.S. of A.) in lieu of a majority culture with small variable differences from region to region or town to town. This is because as a melting pot there's just too many influences flowing in so nothing can really stand-out.

This is a contrast to homelands of people I.e. Skyrim or Morrowind. However they also have different styles that impacts it.

I'd rather see the variety of armors from Morrowind than the weapons.

Personally, I really love Oblivion because it didn't have Asian weapons all over the place - the Elder Scrolls is recognised as a WESTERN RPG, and I don't really enjoy asian-themed games. I'm not racist, I just feel that traditional RPGs shouldn't include this stuff. I guess that maybe a katana or two in some cult or whatever, as in Oblivion would be alright, but I wouldn't want to see tantos and wakizashi as typical weapons across the game world - Seriously, these are Nords, and are regarded as a particularly European race, being based on Scandinavians.
Also, now there is another few hundred years on top of the events of Oblivion - even more time for the Akavir history to have disappeared from the world.

Please, don't troll me for my apparently 'discriminate' views.

Implying Morrowind wasn't generic D&D fantasy?

If I get a Katana, I want to hold it in the middle stance. (See Way of the Samurai 3)

Yeah, but the game world is very much western-oriented.
Look at Cloud Ruler Temple, it didn't fit AT ALL into the game world, surrounded by European-themed cities and people.

I say it before, I say it again. MORE OPTIONS ARE A GOOD THING!!!

If you don't like it, don't use it!

Its like real life, you might not like sausage so when you order your full English breakfast you say "ow, and no sausages please". It doesn't mean they don't exist, they just don't come on your plate.

I will not be using wakisashi or katana (IMO they are too common), they have lost that..wow thats cool.

I will instead go for http://traditionalfilipinoweapons.com/Gayang.html in my left hand and http://www.knife-depot.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/long-sword2.jpg

Haven't katanas been in the game since daggerfall? I doubt they will remove it.

Don't forget dual wielding the Ebony blade and Goldbrand.
I really hope Esbern has a spare Katana going. Not the best in terms of stats, but very nice looking to have at lower levels. Bit off topic, but talking about Esbern, what is the chance of the last Blade also being the last guardian of the Armour of Tiber Septim? That and an Akaviri blade, equpment made for the Dragonborn

As a martial artist I would love to see the return of the wakizashi and the tanto. I like to RP a samurai with some characters, and the combination of the katana and wakizashi/tanto (known as the daisho) would make my playstyle all the more believable. Whether they are there or not, we'll have to see.

Also, if polearms are in, I would love to see a naginata, as this is the weapon I train with the most.

Doesn't fit in the game world? The lore says what fits, not any preconceptions carried over from Earth to Nirn. Akavir did invade, they left traces of their passing, and some of their traditions were perpetuated by the Blades.

Yes, you're right there, but you have to admit that being a tall blond-haired no-nonsense Nord wielding a katana in the cold icy mountains seems to be a bit.. strange..

However, according to the lore it would be appropriate.

And if you do not choose to be the blond-haired no-nonsense Nord the Asian styled weapons could look pretty good on your character. For example: a katana looks great on a battlemage imo.

Edit: a katana looks even better ripped through the heart of a battlemage..

Don't misunderstand me - I think the way katanas were implemented in Oblivion was suitable, where we found them in Akaviri dungeons, and among the Blades. I just don't want non-fitting weapons to be scattered and as common as steel weapons.

And after looking at all these samurai/ninja -enthusiast posts, if you want to RP in an asian style, RP in an asian game, or use mods. Bethesda shouldn't be succumbing to these desires in attempt to satisfy everyone who comes up with an idea that doesn't fit. Play some MMORPG if katanas need to be the main weapon of a game.

I see what you are saying. Katanas and Dachi do fit, that's all there is to it, but I have always thought of hand to hand as barroom brawling or bare knuckle boxing gone good, and don't understand the kung fu/SF dragon punch posts. The (vampire) monks you come across are definitely Tamrielic, not Shaolin. Some things fit, some things don't.

I agree on this, partly. Katanas could be in, but not in the same way as in Morrowind. Like I said, a katana seems to be a bit exotic in the cold mountains of Skyrim. Sure they can put it in because of the lore, but not too overwhelming please. The main weapons should be the more brutal iron and steel weapons since that are the weapons of the Nord.
