Alchemy Book

Post » Wed May 18, 2011 9:24 pm

I don’t think anything like this existed in Oblivion but I thought it could be a good idea.

After you’ve mixed a few ingredients together and created a potion, that potion could appear in a book listing the ingredients used and what the resulting potion was.

I think this could be a good idea as you may have created a good potion and want to remember what ingredients were used to make it. You could then just select the named potion and as long as you have the ingredients it will automatically make it for you. If you don’t have the ingredients then it could tell you what you are missing. This I think would improve the speed of alchemy.

Alternatively; the book could show you the quantity of each required ingredient that you currently have.

I think this would be good as when you are out exploring; you could look at the book to see what ingredients you need to be able to make this specific potion and you can then just keep an eye out for the remaining ingredients.

What do you think?

It does sound like a good idea, but I think half the fun of alchemy is deciding which ingredients fit best to create what you want without the unfortunate side effects.
If there was a book like this, or some sort of menu for it, some people would never have the motivation to improve their potions by unlocking their other effects, as you'd already know which ingreditents to use. It would add more laziness to the game, I think.
It would save a lot of time however, say if you were near death raiding a dungeon and wanted to make a restore health potion quickly.

It is a good idea, but I suppose you could always write them down as you go along and do it that way. I love alchemy I've got a fair few recipes written down somewhere for potions I use a lot, like restore health, fortify speed etc. I also found a cure for skooma, that is I developed a potion that got rid of the negative effects of skooma whilst fortifying health or fatigue or something useful. I can't remember what it is off the top of my head but it was very useful when I didn't have time to get to a chapel to take away the negative effects.

I'm just an alchemy geek though, perhaps other people who don't like alchemy would find it a bit more useful.

This seems like a good idea. However, as you've stated, only after you've discovered a potion should it appear in your journal. That way discovery and tinkering still apply.
Perhaps the effects of your potions could be listed and the applicable strength as well. As you advance in alchemy, the strength or potency is adjusted in your log. I write down the recipes for good mixtures anyway. A feature of the game that saves me from keeping up with post-its of recipes and effects would be nice.

If you implement this, it should be something more like how crafting works in other games, like Fallout and World of Warcraft, so you can open your set up with your alchemy book and have a bunch of predetermined recipes with their effects listed to the side.

Two Worlds 2 had a similar system. Every time you made a new incrediate it would make a scroll. That was you just have to click on the scroll and it makes the potion for you instead of having to add the individual items every time.

I just can't get over the fact that people demand a bunch of Goldberg-like features in the game that are easily replaced by a [censored] paper and pencil

You can't click on a [censored] paper and pencil and have the game automatically check to see if you have all required reagents and make the item for you, like how Dragonborn1 suggested.

As well as real life books don't have a search button. Beths are not going to add something because you are lazy or can't memorize a recipe consisting of four words.

Thats a stupid comment.

Why have an in game map when you could just explore and draw your own map?

Why have a journal of quests when you could just write down what you are supposed to do and where to go?

These are just things to help make things easier for you such as the possibility of an alchemy book.

I think having a potion book is a great idea. I suggested this In annolder thread, so I'll sum it up here if I may...

Alchemey works the same as past games, except their is a new button that says "alchemy journal" or such. You start off by creating potions the normal way we always do, but this time when we make a potion it is added to our alchemy book. From that point on, if you want to make that exact potion, just click your journal, it pops open, and lists the potions name effects, side effects, ingredients. Potions that you have ingredients for will be bold type, you click the name and it makes the potion.

Later on, when you've developed better potions you can delete older ones if you'd like. Also you should have the ability to put them under headings, like poisons, status effects, healing etc. This makes it easier to find what your looking for.

This is common sense IMO. Why write it all down, when in the game our pc should be? I usually have a crap load of ingredients, and sometimes my more complicated/rare potions I forget. I'd much rather have a nice/sleek journal that is a representation of my pc writing down what he makes.

I used a great mod where u can store alchemy recipes and it also made life easier in so many ways.

I want that :P

1- book for our recipes
2- easier way to distinguish potion types beside name like:

bottle color
bottle shape

3- and some kind of alchemy ingredient storage we can set in our house so that we can access them "remotely" if we do alchemy in the house without having to drag them into out inventory every time.

Another idea that could be implemented with this is when you find an alchemy book or recipe on a scroll.

Just like when you read books; sometimes it will increase one of your skills. Reading/stealing a recipe from someone will add that recipe into your book.

Yes to all of that, I want that too.
It would be very nice when after playing some time you can walk into your alchemy room or area and see all the rare potions you have in stock, and all the recipes you have discovered.

Hello Sunshine. I guess we should just hope the game will have no improved features at all just for the sake of tradition. I mean at the end of the day all video games are really just a bunch of stats. The animations and quality of gameplay and design are secondary or tertiary to the fun of the game.

'Back in my day we had graphics that svcked. We had to write everything down. All of our experiences were bland and without frills. We liked it that way and fought to keep it that way. We even bashed and name-called every time someone made a suggestion we didn't like. And by the way. Get of my [censored] lawn you [censored] kids!'

This point is awesome! As long as you make them in your house--in your alchemy lab 'container'--then not having to drag or click over scores of ingredients would be simple and smart.

I think a journal would be more suitable. A list of the possible ingredients would be added when you discover them for yourself.

Morrowind had a search method for your journal. I don't see whats wrong with including a table of contents listing the possible effects.
