Alcohol in Skyrim

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:28 pm

Hey, i was mondering what you guys thought the devs should do with alcohol in this game. It really didn't make sense to me that you could drink back a bunch of bottles of wine and it would just lower your attributes. Maybe they could add a fuzzy screen or make you stumble around for a while?

How does that not make sense? ex: You drink alcohol so your fine motor skills go. The way that's simulated in an RPG is by lowering your stats.

As for the fuzzy screen, that is not fun, and is not immersive. Why? Because I don't actually have fuzzy vision in real life, so my eyes naturally contrast the screen with the background (my computer desk/living room/whatever), and it feels wrong. Besides, having a fuzzy screen and being unable to see is just annoying when trying to play the game. Much better if they just lower your stats and your character gets a bit weaker (slower attack speed, lower accuracy with ranged weapons, stuff like that), because then you can still play the game.

yeah some real effects should be included..

maybe a slight blur to the screen.

and make your speed/direction fluctuate. If you drink lots you should pass out and wake up in a jail cell wearing a khajiit bra.

What about some of the positive effects of alcohol though?

Increased personality + social skills, reduced pain detection (ie. higher health) lol.. there's gotta be more

(does a khajit bra have 8 cups)

Would be nice to see yourself fall around the room, like tripping and you see the camera's laying sideways, like you're laying on the floor!

However, if you drink, Beth should have people drink along with you.

Yes. Slight blur and stumbling around.
Not a hard thing to do. Many mods have done it for Oblivion. It adds up to the alcohol experience :)

I don't know if they were alcoholic but some of the concoctions I created with alchemy were pretty deadly!

I'd be fine with some liquids that boosted stats while lowering others. There already is wine and stuff in Oblivion (unless OOO added them).

Your character should stumble, and see double vision if you drink enough. It would really be something if you could drink enough that the screen would black out and you would find yourself in a different room hours later with damaged health (hangover!). :)

And I agree that speechcraft should go up to a certain point. It should drop after that you drink past that point though. And a slight boost to your armor rating would be a nice touch while you were drinking.

Should depend on how drunk you get. Blurriness and contrast should be upped the more drunk you are. Skills will suffer more critical hits the more drunk you are. On a positive note, your charisma and strength will go up but of course your intelligence will be struck a large blow.

Those are all illusory. Try being the only sober person around a bunch of drunk people and you'll see just how much their personality and social skills improve. :D

Reduced pain detection, perhaps, but that does not equate to higher health. Your body still takes the same damage, you just don't realize it until later.

I'll also cast a vote against the blurry screen. I don't remember if that was standard in Oblivion or behavior added by a mod, but it annoyed me quite a bit. I don't get blurry vision when I drink in real life unless I drink a lot.

I think the only reliable way of simulating the effects of alcohol in TES is to lower your attributes. I think the two most likely to be affected would be agility and endurance, depending on how much you drink. Personality is also a likely target.

[Edit: This is not to say, by the way, that there are no positive effects to limited alcohol consumption. But most of those effects are long-term (related to the prevention of various diseases and disorders, or related to overall psychological well-being) and would be hard to model in TES.]

If someone has only had a few drinks they are always more sociable and chatty. Once they become drunk then perhaps the positive effects become more illusory.

And obviously in real life pain reduction does not equal invulnerability, but in a game the effect should be something similar to a health buff imo.

@boom_cheese, to be honest I'm not sure how many nipbles a cat has lol... maybe 8?

by that reasoning why do you need to swing a sword. The sword cuts your opponent so why do you need to see it move instead of just having it do damage to your opponent whenever you hit the button.

Noone would drink a drink that only gave you stat losses, the game should simulate something fun about the drink so that people actually would want to drink it. Look at red dead redemption.

I think skooma should make you hallucinate too.

True

That would be nice yes ^^. And btw, I'd love to see Bethesda branch out a bit more with the drugs. I?m sure the nords have some funny new kind of drug up there, perhaps Amanita based?
Hopefully their experience from FO3 will make them add more drugs etc.

alcohol should give a small health buff.

Once upon a time in Modern Russia, some guy drank way too much vodka. he was beyond HAMMERED. He got in a fight with his wife, and decided to flop out the window of their apartment on the 20th floor. He fell, and hit the ground but survived. He then proceeded to go up and flop out the window again, totally unharmed due to his relaxed muscles.
Alcohol should make NPCs more sociable and chatty.

Alcohol shoould give a health buff, resistance to blunt and hand to hand, and decreased fall damage maybe, with a bit of a wonky view and decreased intelligence, and maybe hand to hand.

No that's just stupid, who is going to have a few beers, or wine and then go quest with lower attributes. I'm thinking that people who want to get drunk in this game are either going to start a bar fight and have some fun, crash and go to sleep, or amuse themselves by walking around the city
