Is Alduin Akatosh or his son?

Post » Thu Dec 08, 2011 3:55 am

A certain someone tells you later on that alduin is akatoshs first born son but then the lore ive read on the internet says alduin is just what the nords named akatosh

"He claims to be the Avatar and First-Born of Akatosh" unofficial elder scrolls pages wiki

"Alduin is the Nordic opposite of Akatosh, and only superficially resembles his counterpart in the Nine Divines." The Elder Scrolls Wiki

I'm also confused.

Apparently Akatosh saved your ass back in Oblivion , but then comes back in Skyrim and suddenly wants to swallow the entire world?

Well I never, a bipolar god!

Alduin is like Jesus. Some people say he's the son of akatosh, some people say he is akatosh. All from point of view

Both. He's Jesus Christ.

EDIT: Dammit, ninja'd, and I thought I was being clever with that metaphor.

you'd get better answers in the lore forum, but i don't know. I really wanted akatosh to be some dual god of time, symbolising the forever aspect of time for the empire, and being the time as a destroyer for the nords...sadly it appears that aludin was attempting to mantle aka...which makes little sense because the nords knew of aludin before aka was created

Akatosh created the world and Alduin comes to destroy it, only for Akatosh to create a new one, and Alduin to destroy that, etc. etc. etc.

It's also important to keep in mind that the game devs love to create ambiguity exactly like this. They've done it in all the Elder Scrolls games, and TES lore is replete with examples of "No, this is how it really happened." Examples include the Battle at Red Mountain, Lorkhan/Shor's hand in creation, and the Dragon Break.

I believe that Alduin is the firstborn son of Akatosh, he himself tells you that, as does Odhaviing at the end of the game.
In a way he may be considered a part of Akatosh, a wayward fragment, but I don't believe them to be the same entity.

From the UESP article on Akatosh:

Akatosh (Auri-El to the Aldmer[1] and Alduin to the Nords[2])

Seems like they're the same, some kind of dual god?

Lore tends to get muddy in a setting where it's claimed between the lines that Vivec had access to the Construction Kit.

Akatosh is one of the Divines, who takes the form of a dragon.
Alduin is a dragon, who was leader of the dragons who ruled Skyrim Eras beforehand.

Which is the same entity.

According to one in-universe scholar. Not objective fact.

The source of the Alduin is Akatosh idea is a book titled something to that effect. All books in-game are in-setting and suffer from perspectives, speculation, and misinformation.

It says right in the game by Alduin himself that he is the eldest son of Akatosh and this is also sated by Odahviing.

As does most lore. All lore before Sky says they are the same. Different interpretations of the same entity. Which makes way more sense than another Aedra running around.

Every race has their own names for most Aedra. Alduin being Akatosh is no different than Kyne being Kynareth.

And what isn't speculation of subjective is the fact that the Imperial pantheon is filled with conglomerated Aedra from other polytheistic followings. Further supporting the fact that these are all the same deity. Just like how you get similar ideologies (great floods, etc.) around the world in real life.

Well, it would make sense that the God of Time is the one that ends time, or turns the sand watch. The World Eater Alduin could be just one of his aspects or avatars.

Yea, except
Spoiler
You kill Alduin deader than he has ever been before, and the Temple of Akatosh still works fine for blessings.

You cant kill Aedra. They just come back in a different form, like Ysmir Wulfharth.
