This topic actually had me thinking a bit, and I've come up with a hypothesis: Alduin was not and was Alduin.
Bear with me here.
Suppose Akatosh-as-destroyer is a genuine aspect of Akatosh. Take Alduin, who claimed godhood; what do we know of the paths to divinity? Alduin was doing the Akatosh dance, walking the path of the Destroyer, Akatosh AE Alduin. The Nords, knowing in a very real way the depredations of Alduin come to refer to that-which-is-called-Akatosh as Alduin.
So, what does the destruction of the dragon Alduin mean in the long run? Is it possible that, by his dancing as the Destroyer, that this aspect was separated from Akatosh in some fashion, especially since Alduin was banished outside of Akatosh's domain, which is to say time? In Alduin's destruction, Akatosh's aspect as the World Eater is returned, and his jaws gape over the whole of Nirn once more.
