All Cyrodiilic culture gods, hero-gods, saints

Post » Fri Aug 02, 2013 10:43 pm

When I read about Cyrodiil as it was presented in many in-game books and out-of-game sources, I always imagined this land as full with gods, mortals revered as ones, mythical figures of greater or smaller prominence, and so on. Just like Rome of old, where Romans believed in thousands of various spirits. Some of this beings are very important for everybody - like Eight Divines - there are spirits more obscure then the greater ones, like Shezzar, some of them also hold special place in hearts of Cyrodiils, like Tiber Septim/Talos or Reman I Cyrodiil. My question is, who do you think can be also revered as a godlike something, hero-god, you know what I mean? Saint Alessia, Morihaus-Breath-of-Kyne, of this we know, but who else? Reman II I would imagine (there is even something about him in this manner on Temple Zero), maybe prince Juilek Cyrodiil, some emperors of the Septim line, like, Pelagius the First, Uriel I and Uriel V, Pelinal Whitestrake, and so on.

Also, didin't that surprise you that White-Gold Concordat banned worshipping Talos and left cults of, let's say, Reman Cyrodiil or Alessia untouched, or at least so it would seem...?

I think that Empress Hestra (from the middle of the first era, credited with expanding and uniting Cyrodiil despite the conflict caused by the Alessian Order) would be treated with equal reverence to Reman Cyrodiil, if less than Alessia and Tiber Septim. The prophet Marukh is probably remembered in some sense - with either reverence or hatred. There are a whole host of other heroes besides those you mentioned - if the Colovians weren't so staunchly traditional, they might pray to Bendu Olo for defense of their shores.

Besides the Eight Divines and well-known historical figures, the Cyrodiils once worshipped a complex pantheon of animal spirits and ancestors. There's also The One, the singular deity at the head of the Alessian faith from the First Era. Worship of this has probably died out in the 3rd and 4th era, except in obscure cults like the Marukhati.

This has to do with Talos' role in both the history of the Summerset Isles and in the metaphysics of Nirn as a whole. Numidium's Siege, when General Tiber Septim finally conquered the Aldmeri Dominion, was absolutely devastating to Alinor. Moreover, in his divine form, Talos fulfills the role of Lorkhan, holding together the prison of the mortal world that Altmer seek to escape. No other Human deity or hero affects the Elven worldview in the same way. The White-Gold Concordat could be a Thalmor attempt to remove Talos from the picture by removing the support of worship.

In my book Reman is considered at least as equal with Alessia, but that's just my headcanon, not really based on strong facts. As for Marukh, I think he is more revered than remembered with hate, but that's still just my opinion, this time based on certain Daggerfall book that quotes him when describing foundations of tamrielan legal system. In the end we can say that all important figures from the past are revered in some way, and this is not what I was looking for when I created this subject - but of course we can discuss that also, topic evolves, which is only natural. I wanted to know which heroes can be considered as greater than others, looked at with reverence, just like already mentioned Reman Cyrodiil, Alessia. Maybe also there are some more obscure gods, like Shezzar (well, heck, I don't think this one is particularly obscure in these parts of our forum :P ) or Ebonarm (this one was ever worshipped in Cyrodiil...?).

As for Talos - yes, I know why Thalmor want to erase him from the mythic so badly - unmaking the creation, destroying the Usurper, to kill men is to reach heaven and all of this not-so-well-made metaphysical stuff of the new Dominion. I know that Talos is much more important for Altmers in acheiving their goals, but one would think, at least this is what I think, that it would be wise to also ban cults of such hero-gods of mankind like Alessia or Reman, or even Shezzar...

Recognizing Cyrodiilic hero-worship would mean attributing complexity to Imperials, which Beth is obviously loathe to do.

It's always surprising to boot up the game and see a whole culture built around a high-school production of Shakespeare's Caesar.

Banning Talos is vital to the destruction of Man because he has been proven to be divine and is the "fullfilment" of Lorkhan. The other lesser gods/saints mean nothing to the Thalmor and may not even be actual deities.

As to the OP, Martin is probably revered as a hero/saint at this point.

Here are the saints that I know of:

Saint Kaladas, a master craftsman who built the Chapel of Zenithar in Leyawiin as a tribute to the legend of the Mace of the Crusader (from KotN).

Saint Jahn, (probably the origin of St. Jahn's Wort).

Saint Osla, A second-era healer, who ministered to the fallen after the Sack of Sancre Tor (statue in Chorrol).

Saint Alessia, we all know her.

There are others who might be saints but are never called as such. Namely:

Rislav the Righteous

Bendu Olo

Kantus Jeril

Antus Pinder

Well if we're going with monkeytruth, add St. Reman II to our list as well.
