With skyrim which cities are the major ones...

I think Markath and Winterhold are two of them.

Hopefully at E3 we'll get to see some of a city with the player buying stuff from shops and interacting with NPC's.

5 huge cities, + (at least) 20 settlements with ten or more buildings. According to gameinformer.

In comparrision, the town Bruma in Oblivion has 23 buildings.

The pc modders are gonna be stressed lol "where can i put this GIANT castle i made???" oh yeah...barely anywhere..."hope they allow for some geographical map to be made so u can create " other worlds" like the shivering isles i love getting on youtube and watching the mod community..i dont have a pc myself (ipod typing) but i love the mods ppl come up wit

Consider Cyrodiil's strange shape, particularly in the south heading towards Layawiin. Now look at Skyrim. Not even counting the area wasted by the useless riverlake thing, that whole stretch of land made the game world seem far smaller than it actually was. Skyrim is more or less uniform, like Vardenfell. Overall, I have a feeling Skyrim is going to feel much bigger than Oblivion because of that.

If you look at this http://dorkshelf.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads//2011/01/skyrim20map.jpg from the game informer video, Some of the markers are shaped like the cities instead of just squares. And assuming Markarth is one (it's difficult to see on the map), it looks like the 5 cities are Markarth, Solitude, Riften, Whiterun, and Windhelm.

This would make sense because the cities are spread out and create a kind of symmetry on the map.

That may be assuming too much though.

I'm hoping to see some cool settlements on some mountains. That place with the NPC chopping wood in the trailer intrigues me. Isn't that Solitude?

I worry more about the world feeling incredibly cramped up.

Not all of them have been confirmed yet. Solitude, Riften, Windhelm, Markarth, and one other. Either Dawnstar, Falkreath, or Whiterun. I think it may be the latter.

I think the mountaneous regions will help space things out. That way the flatlands aren't cramped.

Yup.

Skyrim needs a certain degree of sparseness, otherwise the spacious mood might be irrevocably lost.
If the map is about the same size as Oblivion's and there are 5 major cities, each one larger than the biggest one in Oblivion, we just might have a problem in that department.

But i stand to be corrected.

Games like these usually always feel a little bit 'cramped'. Can't walk 50ft in Oblivion without running into a cave or fort of some kind.

Keep in mind that some places will be on mountains, which will free up flatland space.

I read somewhere that they felt Oblivion's features were too spread out and they are going to be a lot more tightly packed in Skyrim.
EDIT: I found it, it was an old quote about Fallout 3, not Skyrim.

That would be a solution, instead of the same even density throughout the entire map.
You should have to work hard to find certain secluded locations in the middle of frosty nowhere.

MsPaint comparison, notice it's the same length across but Skyrim is a longer line.

The verticality is really going to add a lot yo the world. Both in looks and in space.
