To all snipers: do you prefer guns or energy weapons (EW) ? : Fallout: New Vegas

Hi all,

This is my first playthrough and I'm doing a sniper with guns. However, I find myself thinking that maybe I should have picked energy weapons, as the YCS/186 is incredibly powerful. I'm currently sniping with the sniper riffle as I do not have the AMR yet.

As a sniper, do you prefer guns or energy weapons (EW) ? Please comment on your vote !

By the way, does the YCS/186 have a scope as good as the sniper riffle ? What about the range ? How does it feel to be sniping with energy weapons ?

I have never used EW weapons as a sniper so I wouldn't know I guess my vote kinda svcks.. Can you even snipe with an EW weapon?

Energy weapons can't be silenced. Assuming that's important to you.

I find guns more satisfying. I couldn't tell you why. Perhaps it's the fact there are more to choose from (you can snipe with guns other than rifles...) and of course I like the option of a silencer when I can get it. Or perhaps it's the sound effects. Pew-pew-pew just doesn't cut it for me. Although the gauss rifles do have a nice sound and knock down effect/visual. They're slow to load and fire and go thru ammo like gangbusters but very powerful. The YCS has a decent scope...I couldn't comment on the maths of range or crit range vs. bullet rifles. I'm not that much of a true number cruncher, sadly.

Guns personally.

I just love the hunting rifle in all FO games, now it can be modded without Mods it's even better.

I don't take a lot of shots so when I do, I want it to matter. I prefer the YCS/186. If I can hit the target, it's going down.

Plus. it really does make a powerful sound.

Guns, because I removed the patch (it caused more problems than it fixed) and my sniper rifle is back to god-mode now. :thumbsup:

Energy weapons can't be silenced. Assuming that's important to you.

Holorifle is pretty quiet.

When it comes to pure damage you not going to beat the gauss rifle, and that's before counting max charge ammo. However that power is rarely necessary.
Even the humble laser rifle with the focus optics and scope can kill most human enemies in a single shot.

But guns have a silencer

I snipe with the Varmint Rifle as well as the GOBI Sniper Rifle and Hunting Rifle. Don't get hung up on the AMR for sniping. I've taken down deathclaws with the Varmint Rifle w/silencer & scope at distance.

Do get 100 Guns skill, 100 Sneak skill and all the right Perks.

Do get 100 Guns skill, 100 Sneak skill and all the right Perks.

This is the best, I did quarry junction level ten like this.
All it takes is 80+ guns and sneak ( tbh you're right 100 is best ), placement inside those skips and .223 ammo in bulk 200+ rounds.

Everybody mistakenly thinks you need the big bad powerful stuff.

All you really need is a high skill level. And that skill is applied to lots of different weapons.

And once you take out both legs on that deathclaw from distance, then there's all the fun of standing in front of him on the ground and taking him down with the bb gun or a spear.

I love the BB gun idea you :rock: ,
The best I did was a rolling pin to take down a full health deathclaw.
Four tries, 3 deaths just take every melee, unarmed perk and the other perks that effect those skills / creatures and any weapon will kill anything.

However for more than one you will need sniper weapons to make things easy, I've yet to try the AMR and gauss on a deathclaw.

Sniping wise I use guns because they can be modded and are just better for the situation.

Closer range I use energy weapons, notably the Gauss Rifle

As a sniper, I prefer the silenced sniper rifle but I have used a silenced varmint rifle in the early levels of the game quite successfully.

Guns , first of all because there is more choice of scoped rifles , secondly because you can choose the type of ammunition that is best suited to take out your target , and also cause you can silence your weapon which is quite useful .

My Sniper character uses Guns exclusively. My EW character does snipe limitedly, but due to Gauss Rifle's insane ammo consumption i try to limit it. Over all i prefer Guns for Sniping, a Dragunov SVD (or as FOOK puts it, Norinco Type79 SVD) to be precise
