Is all the lore from Elder Scrolls online treated as canon?

Post » Fri Aug 14, 2015 8:12 pm

I played ESO all winter until it became too grindy for me, but I noticed while I was playing that it had as many lore books as the main games, and I was considering playing it again just to read some of them. Before I hop on to read them though, I have to know if the lore is canon and will be treated as official by Bethesda, or if a lot of it will be thrown out the window when TES 6 comes out. Has Bethesda said anything about whether ESO's lore will be maintained or incorporated in future games? If it is official, do you guys have any recommended reading from Online?

Thanks!

yes, ESO's lore is canon.. you will get some people who will refuse to acknowledge it because of a "Eww, MMO!" mentality, but yes it is canon

Ok thanks for the reply, and yeah that's how I kind of felt before. I didn't bother reading the lore because even though they have stuff on Valenwood, Black Marsh, etc the provinces were not fleshed out or as in depth as they would be if they got the Bethesda treatment.

Does it even matter? The lore is that much of a jelly thing, that one could even deny that there is a thing like canon in TES to begin with.

I'd actually say a lot of the lore is more fleshed out and as time goes on more and more of the provinces lore will be known. In fact I think ESO had showed more new lore surrounding Valenwood then Bethesda did with Skyrim

Which never made sense to me. The individual stories of any PC in any Elder Scrolls aren't canon, unless it's something like the main quest. The books and history leading up to the events, that's always been canon. This game is no different, any PC story is just for that PC, but everything else in the game is canon. Just like any other Elder Scrolls (main series) title.

It has Magna-Ge. That alone confirms it for me. (Of course, they call them Celestials, but they are most definitely Magna-Ge. I mean, they're fallen constellations, what else could they be?)

Incidentally, they did a lot to flesh out and build on Bethesda's version of Skyrim too, pretty much only for the better. Like Kynesgrove being a place Nords pilgrimage before war to seek the blessing of Kyne, as she has a coven of priestess there. And fleshing out the Companions' history a bit. And the Crown of Freydis. Etc.

Let's just put it this way... I got a mod for ESO so I could mark what books I've already read. And there's a wide selection of books to read...

That should just end up being a main feature in TES games. There are so many books and I forget which ones I've read and it ends up with my private library being cluttered with the same copy of numerous books.
