All Things Maps

One thing I always loved about old school maps in open world RPG's is how thay were blacked out

until discovered this was great IMO because you new exactly witch areas you have and haven't

explored. New school open world RPG's for whatever reason dropped this form of mapping

witch to this day I don't fully understand? If anything the range of lightened pathway

should of been narrowed to within a few feet of your PC making it more precise.

One thing I love about new school open world RPG's is how much more

material you can have on it's exterior relative to the overall size of

the map. Im always excited to see what new instalments

upcoming open world RPG's will have on their maps.

What type of map do you prefer?

What type of map should

FO4 have?

Would you like a blacked out until discovered map? Would you like a map maid to scale like Sky Rim?

Would you like a super huge map like GTA 5? maybe you world like a hybrid type map?

Past or present and future maps are the discussion I would love to read your opinions

regarding all things maps as it's a extremely important element in open world RPG's

IMO.

Fog of War? It all depends on the game. Where there is a 3D landscape, I want to know if there is a mountain or valley I have to traverse in a certain direction. So, a general lay of the land is good. However, I don't want to know where the locations are until I am told about them or discover them, much the way that Oblivion/Skyrim/FO's do.

I do like the FOW on a local map for interiors, that tells me if I have been there before, or have parts left to explore.

The Fog of War would only really work if we go back to the map node system.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas have their version of it, locations aren't marked until we get to it.
