All Your History: id Software

A great documentary on id that goes from the founding days of the company with SoftDisk, to the PC scrolling breakthrough and Commander Keen, to the scrapped melee RPG concept for Quake.

This is a wonderful series from Machinima and they seem to really go out of their way to get their facts straight rather than just glancing over the topics. You can also watch episodes on other companies like Valve, 3D Realms and Westwood.

Caught this about a week ago. Thought it was really cool. Here's to RAGE putting the company back on the map as a developer and not just for their tech.

I'd been following this series for a while, although I stopped a little while ago. Still waiting for one on our beloved Bethesda.

That was rad. I watched it all. Can't wait for part 5. I had no idea DOOM was such a big deal. So that was where the term "you got fragged" came from.

Very interesting!

Edit: Ooh, I just saw a quick shot of Rescue Rover in the second video. I remember playing that game many years ago, but I had no idea what it was called, or that it was from id. :o

I hope id can turn around their stagnant game design with their next batch of titles. They really did take major blows in the long term after Tom Hall and later John Romero left. It was the synergy between all the founding members that made id's games truly special. As brilliant as Carmack is, I don't agree with his decisions when he started calling more of the shots for the game designs. Quake 3 might have been a more refined pure deathmatch experience than UT in the end, but the lack of variety really showed itself. And the more survival horror-esque approach for Doom 3, focused more on single monster encounters was absolutely something I didn't want in a Doom game.

I wonder if an episode on Bethesda would really be as interesting as the ones picked so far. Their history doesn't seem to be as riddled with drama and internal struggles.

They could make an episode about the Bethesda forums. Drama and struggles around every game release! :P

Is RAGE owned by ID or Bethesda, or joint ownership, or?

RAGE is being developed by ID, published by Bethesda Softworks. Both are part of ZeniMax Media. Not sure what you mean?

If id wanted to do a RAGE 2, can Bethesda say no. Or if Bethesda wanted another developer to do RAGE 2, can id say no

Was wondering because I was just reading about that whole Infinity Ward founders vs Activision business

No, that would be up to Zenimax, their parent company.

You don't see Fox getting to tell Comedy Central what to do, even though they're both owned by Viacom.

I guess its whatever is in their agreements and things of those sorts. Those big shot private companies.

I wonder how franchising works. Like if Zenimax directors wants to make a MMO Fallout but Bethesda directors dont want to. How interesting the business is.

I wish they could go back and fully develop the original idea for Quake.
