Almost afraid to Buy into the Skyrim Hype

Post » Sat Mar 06, 2010 11:56 am

I am kind of scared to buy into all the hype surrounding the new TES game. Especially after Oblivion IMO was a mess. Too conformed and dumbed down in many ways. To me FO3 was a little better and NEW VEGAS wasn't that great. So now I am a bit leary about SKYRIM. Is there any real changes to this game that will make it better then TES4? and will it be a better story and gameplay? Anything else that can relieve my fears???

Umm...good luck with that?

If you truly hated Oblivion, however, I would be surprised if you enjoy Skyrim.

If you thought OB was dumbed down, you will think SR is (non PC word for mentally handicapped).

Morrowind was perfect. Now this was before most games started becoming dumbed down, back in 05, I remember playing Morrowind exclusively for hundreds of hours and I was so excited they we're making a new Elder Scrolls game. When I started playing Oblivion finally it felt like I was in school and just went back 4 grades. First game I can remember being dumbed down.

It also didn't capture me like Morrowind did. When you played it you knew you we're playing a game, unlike TESIII where the game immersed me in the world. I don't know how to explain it, maybe someone else here who knows what I mean can.

If Skyrim continues down the road Oblivion paved then it will not be good. Morrowind lit this series like a rocket and Oblivion shot it down. If they can go back to what made Morrowind perfect while incorporating plenty of new and good ideas it will be amazing.

Personally I just feel like there is so much at stake with this next game that I'm scared it will fail....

If anything, graphics, dialogue, and setting should be better. There is no way of knowing if the story will be better yet, and gameplay is entirely opinion based - some will like the changes, some will hate it, some will have very mixed feeling.

Overall I think it will be a bit of give and take: Add some things that are better than the past games, but also take some things people didnt want to go away.

Dude...dont buy into the hype, just watch the news as it develops....

Form your own opinion....for the love of god, dont buy into the negativity that can be clearly seen at the changes...try it out, if you dont like it...mods for pc users, trade in for console users...it's very simple.

Hype is never a good thing...neither is being part of a mob...be your own person and use your judgement.

I believe Oblivion scored way higher (average) and sold much better than Morrowind. It's just the vocal internet RP [censored] who kinda like to say otherwise.

I don't think you can really judge until you actually play the game.

Some love MW, others loved OB. Hopefully SKyrim will be the best of both :D

I'm gonna be a vocal internet RP-cencored- and say that Oblivion was a superior game compared to MW, but it wasn't a good RPG compared to MW.

From where I'm sitting, though, it seems like they've listened(at least a little) to what the vocal internet RP-censored- said about Oblivion.
Which is a good thing.

Yawn. Another MW vs. OB thread. Try to wait until the game comes out before passing down judgments.

I think that's a bit unfair. Reviewers score games based on whether they are good games. Oblivion was a very good game. However, Oblivion was not a game calculated to appeal to the same people who loved Morrowind. Anyone who bought Oblivion thinking it would be an improved Morrowind would quite rightly have been disappointed.

Their disappointment doesn't make Oblivion a bad game, and Oblivion's high score doesn't make their disappointment wrong.

To the OP - Buying a game on expectation and hope (hype) is always a bad idea. Read reviews, think about what the reviewers are saying, and what kind of game they're describing. Try the game if you can do so legally. Then make your decision. When I read the reviews of Dragon Age 2 it was obvious, despite the high scores, that I wouldn't like the game as much as I like Dragon Age Origins. I bought the game knowing what I was getting, I wasn't disappointed by unrealistic expectations, and I've really enjoyed it. Not as much as if it was an improved DAO, but far more than if I'd assumed it was.

I really hate when people speak about this "downward slope" from Morrowind to Oblivion, probably because I'm one of the few people who thinks Morrowind wasn't the most perfect, unique gem in gaming history. Don't take me wrong, the game is good but it had problems, serious problems.
Oblivion fixed most of these problems, but it also bought its own problems as well. But with Shivering Isles, you could see they were trying to fix the many problems Oblivion had, and by Fallout 3 they fixed them, this is why I call F3 "what Oblivion should have been, with guns".

After these, I have faith in Bethesda, some of the changes could be questionable, but they bought up good reasons and alternatives. If nothing would change the whole series would just stagnate...

Anything else that can relieve my fears???

Not on this forum. It's mostly populated by incredibly overhyped people (see threads like "will you die if Skyrim is delayed"), and incredibly pessimistic people who react to every detail released with dismay, complaint, and derision. Needless to say, they'll tell you that all your fears are understated, and you should be even more afraid.

Best thing to do is probably realize that it's just a game, and step away from the forums & press releases.

(Although, if you didn't like Oblivion, Fallout 3, or FO:NV, you might just not like gamesas games. Or did you play & like Morrowind?)

Don't always trust your eyes. Never blindly believe anything you read or hear, and never, ever, under no circumstances give any credence to hype or advertising. If it worries you, wait until the reviews are out, and read ALL of them.

This is exactly what I've been saying (check out the "Skyrim's weakness" thread, fifth page). Morrowind fanatics are so obsessed with asserting Morrowind's superiority over Oblivion that they won't concede to ANY flaws in Morrowind. Yes, Morrowind was superior in some ways, but it also had some serious flaws that Oblivion did not have (or in the very least was fixed by mods). Some of the flaws in Morrowind are actually staggering, much worse than what Oblivion's mod community indeed has patched over.

I really like both games, I'm merely calling for a reality check among Morrowind jihadists.

Thats exactly what i was thinking. Oblivion was a really good game and had it's problems. They fixed some with fallout. Since they have been talking about fixing oblivions problems with Skyrim so hopefully that works which im sure it will.

Hype is never a good thing...neither is being part of a mob...be your own person and use your judgement.

This times whatever the highest number one can conjure.

After being disappointed by the hype-mobile so many times (with Oblivion, Fallout 3, Borderlands, GTA IV, and various other games), I can say that not buying into the hype by avoiding it is the best thing one can do. There's a higher chance that you won't be disappointed with the game you're interested in, and perhaps be very pleasantly surprised, as was the case with myself and New Vegas. Which trust me, with all of the major improvements that New Vegas had to offer, it was REALLY HARD to not buy into the hype.

Not only that, but why should YOU make YOUR opinion the same as thousands of others? You're an unique individual, you have the right to think whatever you want about something, no matter what others tell you or persuade you to think.

Of course, this applies for both sides of the coin as well, as you shouldn't try to tell others to hate something that they love.

Look, don't buy into the Hype, bid your time, make your judgements when the game comes out.

Don't let anyone tell you how good or bad it is, because they haven't played the game just like you, read the information presented, see if it appeals to you, anolyze it carefully for whats garbage and what actually is in game alright?

and don't fall into this crap hole where people start basing predjudices on what game a person preferred more morrowind fans? Oblivion fans? please go away, last I checked all games are preceeded by THE ELDER SCROLLS.........

It would be hard to help you because I don't understand what you're looking for in a game. The games you've mentioned are the games I love...even with their problems. I see a progression and growth and really look forward to where it is now with Skyrim. The tech changes and the company has grown with their personnel and I'm hoping they are some of the best creative people out there. It's not hype to me because it's a marketing plan and everyone just does what they do in talking about the game. The speculation here is more hype-y sometimes. :D I hope you find what you're looking for though...we all should find what we're looking for. :)
