This is what I do, in fact most of my characters stay neutral because as Dragonborns they can get rid of the thalmor all on their own.
And FYI people are easier to take more series when they have actually experienced both sides anyways.

It is worth playing the game by being on both sides to be honest. Once you do that you will realize that both sides are equally right in their own ways and also equally wrong in their own ways.
And to anyone claiming that the Nords are racist is forgetting that even the Imperials can be racist.
It's even very easy to justify an Altmer joining them, considering what they have done towards opposing factions and Altmer not "pure-blooded" enough back in Alinor. If you RP an Altmer who's looking for a chance to bash the Thalmor and gather allies to strike back, the Stormcloak could very well be your choice.
Lord Ulfric Stormcloak. Leader of the victorious Stormcloak Rebellion. He who will soon be High King. He's the TRUE High King and the Jarl of Windhelm.
The tenth divine to some
Just a guy to me though.
If you're gonna kill the man, do it more creatively ^^
Nothing wrong with that, just RP it as a spy or something. I have done both factions and I prefer Imperial but sometimes I join Ulfric's side just to snag the crown out from under him at the last moment and hand it to Tullius. SO yeah, no worries, especially if in the end you sided with your preferred side.
