Alpha Protocol

I think the issues people seem to be having is it's too much like an old rpg for them, which I enjoy. It's based as much on the PCs skill as you the player, and a lot of people just expected Mass Effect in Spyland.

Yeah, I'm really enjoying it too, unlike a friend who bought it, played it for a hour then returned it because it wasn't like Splinter Cell. Unfortunately, I'm crap at the stealth aspect, so I usually get found and engaged. Ah well. :(

I've watched a couple of gameplay vids. It looks good.

But I'll have to wait until it lowers in price.

Not in Europe, probably because of possible shipping problems since the British Isles have a long Spring Bank weekend.

So is the game really as bad as people say?
Graphics aren't anything special but I don't really care about that.

Just finished the game. No idea how long I played, took me about 24-30 hours... yes... I did play A LOT these 3 days. Don't judge me! :swear:

Anyway, pistols and stealth is the way to go. I actually made it all the way through the game without setting of an alarm (that wasn't unavoidable or supposed to go off).
And in boss fights the pistols special ability is way to over powered compared to the other weapon special abilities. And along with the stealth special ability and armor upgrades that reduce ability cooldown you're pretty much a invisible killing machine.
Played as a very trusting guy and made friends with all except two people/factions I met. I was very professional and straight forward.

Gonna play as something not relying on stealth now. Probably more on grenades and submachineguns/shotguns and use more personal and hostile responses, as well as being more selective of my friends. :)

Love the game.

Well I won't. I finished Dragon Age in five days doing everything possible with one character. Yes, that was about 15 hours gametime each day. ^_^

Better than as a shooter. Bugs here and there, AI seems to stop thinking sometimes (dodging to cover most of the times and all of a sudden some enemies decide to stay in the open), but the dialogue, story and characters (in my opinion what really makes an RPG grand) are all very, very good.

You say this, but one reviewer said that full on assault rifles are the way to go. What's up?

How's the choice and consequence? God knows they bragged about it a lot.

Fairly close to the end now, I think. Might finish it this evening.

Personal preferences? :P

I think they are very good, or at least that's my impression. But I won't know for sure until I play the game a second time and try things differently.

I didn't base my "best" on what kills things the fastest, but what saves you the most bullets and what sets of the least alarms. Also, the special ability, which is a bit OP in boss fights.

The final mission in Rome was annoying as hell with a stealth based character.

Just a quick question, what is the setting for the game?

Is it current or is it a little bit more futuristic?

Are the weapons and equipment accurate or fantasy/sci-fi?

I suppose I could have found these answers with a bit of googling but I wanted to go the pseudo human interaction route courtesy of the internet.

Thanks :)

It has some futuristic stuff, but nothing unbelievable.

Heh, that mission.
Spoiler
I tried to save the girl first with my stealth/sabotage guy, but was very unable to do so. The guy holding the girl hostage would just kill her, no matter what I tried. So eventually I just went for the bombs instead, and finished the level that way. I guess it would be easier to save the girl if one had any combat skills there.

Is anybody else getting really annoying skips when you move the mouse around?

Yeah, every time you reach a loading area (loading the next bits of the level), the mouse becomes extremely wonky.

There's supposed to be some fix against the skipping. Look for the APEngine.ini in your My Documents folder for Alpha Protocol, then change the smoothing values in there to
MinSmoothedFrameRate=20
MaxSmoothedFrameRate=30

Works for most people. Don't change anything else in there, we don't know what else that might screw up then. ^_^

I think that there's a way to save her too. When I diffused the bombs I got an attack option as soon as Marburg appeared, and I think if you do it quick enough you get to shoot the guy who is holding her and start the Marburg fight.

Hm. I see. Well, I can try that next play through. But for now, I've finished the game. :D That was a bloody brilliant game, I'll definitely be replaying the game.

Do you reckon I should go to Moscow or Taipei next?

I've pretty much done a 180 with my tech guy. I took all his points out of sabotage and shotguns and put them in SMGs and stealth. It's a quirky choice but so far it's worked for me. That bullet storm ability is fantastic. Just a shame I run out of ammo so quick. Saving up for the 130k+ stealth armour right now, though.

I went with Rome, Taipei then Moscow, and I had a blast that way.

Although some parts of Taipei are a tad... frustrating, even when playing as a guns blazing character, so I dread to think how a stealth guy would do it. I'll go and do a new game right now, on Normal with a purely stealth + pistol based guy. That should be interesting.

For those of you who have it already, I have some questions.

1. How are the different hubs all around, fun to play? Is one slower than the other, story wise, or no?

2. How large are the hubs themselves, and are they lively?

3. How are the clothes? Limiting or pretty well numbered? And are there different ones for different Hubs? So for example, do the Hubs restrict what I can wear or not wear in them?

The hubs themselves are just apartments and they tend to be pretty empty, you access all your misisons from there. You can't pick your civilian clothes but you have a fairly reasonable amount of armour to choose from, with lots of customisation in the form of armour mods.
