Alpha Protocol

It seems even a dev said the game should have been cancelled:

Because a dev would post in the comments on Joystiq, right? It was probably just someone trolling. Or better yet, someone from the site trying to improve traffic.

Doesn't seem so far-fetched to me. If I'd been working on a game for a long time and felt seriously disgruntled over the way it was made resulting in poor reviews I'd probably let off some steam too.

Well that's probably why you don't work for a major game company. It seems unprofessional and childish to me, and I doubt anyone serious about their job would do something silly like that.

Also, I'm actually Gabe Newell, Episode 3 has been cancelled.

The hubs themselves are just apartments and they tend to be pretty empty, you access all your misisons from there. You can't pick your civilian clothes but you have a fairly reasonable amount of armour to choose from, with lots of customisation in the form of armour mods.

Oh, well by hubs I meant Rome, Taipai, Saudi Arabia, and Moscow. :P

I'm actually rather surprised by the amount of choices available. There are choices affecting characters midway through a mission when you've met them a few missions before, etc. Apparently, the game designers had designed it so that the best way to play the game was to do a mission in a hub, switch hub, do a mission in another hub, switch hub again, do mission - etc. According to some people, there's a choice in a mission that is only given out when you're halfway through another hub. I didn't get any specifics though.

So are all the hubs available from the start? So if I start in Taipai, can I shoot over to Moscow or wherever right after finishing just one mission in Taipai, or do I have to unlock them?

Started my second playthrough today.
Going for explosives and assault rifle.

Went to Moscow first this time since I find that's where the best equipment is added to the shop, and I want to get it early.
Rome was quite useless in terms of equipment and Taipei was ok. Will go Taipei after Moscow for the special shotgun you can get there.

Does anyone know where I could get a great assault rifle? I'm thinking the 3 stars one you buy in Saudi might be the best actually.

From Joystiq's review:
Take combat for instance: Much like obvious influence Mass Effect, whether or not your weapon scores a hit is more dependent on its accuracy statistic than your actual skill. Even if you line up your shot perfectly you'll often whiff, especially in the early hours of the game. Note to developers: I don't care if it's realistic, making me miss because of math is never, ever, ever fun. Now stop it.

I think they were looking more for an action shooter rather than an rpg...

I dislike the idea of that gameplay but your right, they expected it to be like most shooters, its annoying that a game has to have shooting like MW" or whatever just to get a decent grade, look what it did to masee effect, its dumbed down like hell.

Spoiler
I think that there's a way to save her too. When I diffused the bombs I got an attack option as soon as Marburg appeared, and I think if you do it quick enough you get to shoot the guy who is holding her and start the Marburg fight.

Spoiler
How do you get that option? All that happens in my game is that Marburg lets her go and shoots her without any chance of intervention.

Spoiler
Well when I started the scene Marburg already liked me, and I think the first option I picked was negotiate, then I got an attack option I didn't pick, then he let her go and shot her.

So it has Deus Ex-like shooting, where accuracy increases with skill? I'm okay with that. :)

That makes sense. When I met him at the cafe, I flipped him the bird (figuratively) He didn't like me that much.

Dunno, it could have been up to choices I made in other missions.
Spoiler
Anyway, I don't know if it'd actually save her, but being given the option to attack before she gets killed, I would presume it does.

Stealth (Shadow Operative) + Pistols (Chain Shot) make this game easy mode.

It starts slow, in true Obisidian fashion, but after Saudi Arabia the game becomes really excellent. Love it.

I was going to get it today but it costs like an extra £5 off Steam. I may as well go and get it from the shop and save a few quid. Well, just one after the cost of Diesel probably...

Alright, so I got it today (EB games had it in stock :D) and it was not as glitchy as I expected (granted I'm still only in Saudi). All I got was some glitch where it lagged when I moved my mouse around, but there was a fix for that by editing the ini, so no biggie. The combat is better than I expected as well (my expectation were very low). It's less about cover-based shooting than most games with a cover system, and I found myself using the pistol more than I thought I would (silenced pistol is OP). The minigames are kind of hard, but that give me a sort of.. thrill, or something. I'm playing as the tech specialist, so I don't know if that's why it's easier.

I haven't seen any effect of my choices at all yet, and the story is kind of just "you are on a mission" with a side of "It's kind of a spoiler involving some guy named Leland". I can see why a lot of people would dislike the combat. If you really liked Gears of War/Mass Effect 2/Uncharted 2 combat, you probably wont like this very much.

40 bucks for AP here. http://www.gogamer.com/Alpha-Protocol--The-Espionage-RPG--I--for-PC-48-Hour-Madness-_stcVVproductId106637732VVcatId551271VVviewprod.htm
IIRC they only ship to NA though.
I wish I had some money to get it but sadly no.

So it has shooting like Deus Ex?

I love DX. And I wish they'd make that new one they were talking about a while back, but sadly, I doubt it.

I'd be okay with shooting/targeting like DX.

Can you put a scope on your pistol, that is all I ask.
