Alpha Protocol

Post » Mon Mar 15, 2010 5:18 pm

Well, http://twitter.com/jesawyer/status/14701863983.

I watched that stream (or maybe another?) for about 10 seconds. The player was pretty awful. Didn't take cover or align his shots (aim system in Alpha Protocol is a bit different, from what I've read) at all. To top it off, he/she charged right into combat with what I think was a silenced pistol. Yeah. =/

As I said before, I think that the release being so close to RDR (and Mario Galaxy and Modnation Racers and Alan Wake), it's going to not get such great sales.

I'll be expecting some opinions from you guys when you get it.

I can't really justify pre-ordering it until I hear some opinions on it.

Just got an e-mail saying my pre-order has been sent, so I may get the game tomorrow! ^_^

Although I hear it is only 20 hours long I went ahead and preordered it for the PC.

Yet it have 120 hours of dialogue, heh.

So, first impressions after one day.
Great atmosphere and writing, though with Obsidian I did not expect anything else. Intel system is grand, the more you know the better you fare, and that's not limited to your enemies. Gather info about a trader and you might haggle a lot better. The weapon upgrade system is thought through really well, specialising your weapon with the slots available for barrel, visor and so on, along with your personal Agent Thorton is a total must. I've gone more for the sneaking approach and equipped silencers - less damage per shot, but I'm still sure the enemy is dead before he can spot me.
Sneaking might take some getting used to for people as there is no separate indicator, you have to rely on what the game shows you. That said, the interface is pretty minimalistic.
Dialogue is great as well, the whole "three B" (Bourne, Bond, Bauer) system is intuitive and using the right option with the right person is rewarding visually and story-wise. Plus, people occasionally refer to your equipment, which I've not seen in recent games.

Downsides: The mini games take some getting used to (figured out hacking late, but now it actually works well for me), the graphics on the PS3 are somewhat lacking anti-aliasing and overall are somewhere between ME1 and ME2 in quality. Plus, sometimes the AI is not quite smart, I think it's mostly minor pathfinding errors in secluded spots.

That's about everything I want to and can state right now. Really enjoying it and can't wait for my PC copy.

Must be alot of mudcrabs...

GS AU: How many hours of gameplay are there in Alpha Protocol?

MR: We're guessing that it will take around 25 hours to get through the game, possibly more if you attempt to stealth, as doing so will mean you'll take a bit more time to get through some of the levels. We're also building in some benefits to people who want to replay the game, including a Veteran mode that allows Mike some new dialogue options and tougher enemies.

Well, with fifteen ending variants and from what I've tried at least two totally different branches in a dialogue it adds up really fast. Though the 25 hours are about the same as an average playthrough of ME1 and 2 which is fine with me. ^_^

Got the game! Currently installing it, too bad I won't have time to actually play it until the late afternoon :(

Also, I pre-ordered the game from GAME, which would give me some kind of Stealth Pack or something, but I don't see it anywhere <_<

Usually you should get a mail or other notification about a code and where to enter and download these things. Probably tomorrow on the official release date.

Not seen any. Yet. Strolling around the Middle East that might not be all that bad. ^_^

I'll be renting it.

The sheer fact that they list themselves as "RPG masters" in their ad...

NEED I point to KOTOR 2? Granted it was a pretty good game, but not exactly a masterpiece. And I STILL don't trust them after that. <_<

I'm very sure they don't decide themselves to brag like that. PR is usually directed by the publisher.

In an RPG sense KOTOR 2 still is a masterpiece, as are most games Obsidian and their quasi predecessors Troika and Black Isle. Plus I'd regard MCA as an RPG master anytime.
What did I want to... Ah, yes: They're as modest to admit that they usually build on pre-existing stuff and improve it while making it buggier, so it surely is not their choice to be labeled as such.

Post here about how it is. A lot of people have disliked its action and stealth aspects, and said it was buggy and unpolished. They didn't mention anything about the RPG aspects, so I'm holding out some hope.

I've never played KOTOR 2, so I can't judge, but many people like it better than the first. Also, MCA is as close to an RPG master as you're going to get (Fallout 2 AND Planescape: Torment). In any case, marketing, you know?

Imagine Mass Effect 1 with more number crunching applied to your skill usage and the approach to RPG skills that Deus Ex took, combined into one game. Works out really, really well. Not seen a single real bug, mind you, except for the pathfinding issues I mentioned above. Pretty satisfied. ^_^

I can't trust this, you seem to be in lala "I just got Alpha Protocol" dreamland. :P I'm pretty sure that bad animations are a valid criticism, even though I don't really care how bad they are. I've also heard people say that the environments are dull, or something (not enough objects?).

Does it seem like character skill takes precedence over player skill? Even in combat? This is important (for it to be a good RPG) and I don't think that any review will cover it. =/

Got an e-mail from GAME saying the Stealth Pack only was for 360 and PS3, not PC.

Looks like a good concept, but the previews aren't indepth enough. Personally, I'm interested, but I'm waiting for the post-release reviews before I consider buying.

Same, i mean it looks good,a and takes all the pluses from splinter cell and mass effect. I dont think you can free roam though, and means that it might be linear and kinda short. If they had multiplayer in it, like co-op missions, i would buy it now.

It appears to me so, yes. Unless you're sufficiently skilled you can't succeed. Trying weapons I totally neglected left me dead when I tried, although could have just grinded my way through the level then by shooting one guy, running away, shooting another, running away again... But that's totally not fun and roleplaying. In essence, you can't just point the little red dot on an enemy and expect Thorton to hit that guy when he's got no skill with that weapon type. ^_^

Reached an area though where I can see that people would think it's "unpolished". Some rooms really miss decorative stuff. But it's not, say, Dungeon Lords bad.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll getting this game maybe next week (so that people will be done playing and can give opinions).

Good info. Raised my anticipation-o-meter even higher.

The steam version here opens in about 2 hours and my fingers are itching like hell.

I can see a lot of people getting disappointed in this game, if they expect it to be an action shooter. And it also lack a lot of polish that many high profile shooters have, the graphics aren't impressive, the AI have it's funny moments, the sneak system could have been better and so on.

And while it took me some time to get used to the stealth and stuff, I think it's absolutely brilliant :P
