alpha testing questions.

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 11:31 am

1. What are the standards for accepting Alpha testers? Will you check credibility of testers this time?
2. When will alpha/beta testing open up for applicants?
3. As a veteran MMO beta tester, What can I expect to see within this game that will make me want to play ES:S over my regular MMO?
4. Will character leveling be restricted to Questing or will there be some areas to "grind out a couple levels"?
5. Will there be a way to skip experience gains if, and when, content becomes trivial due to level disparity? Or will we have level scaling mimic Oblivion?
6. Early in any game travel and running is always seems too slow and to some this is a put-off(negative), Will the level appropriate content be closer together (area wise) this time?
7. Players, What one thing or item, did you like best about Oblivion, that you would like to see in Skyrim?

hmm thats all for now.

They use their own inhouse testing department.

ES:V is single player, if you're after an MMO, you are in the wrong place.

Not sure on rest yet.Not enough details as yet.

Bethesda doesn't open it's games for alpha or beta-testing from the community - you would need to approach them directly and apply for a QA position. I'm sure you can do that, they have job postings on-line (or where you can submit your resume).

It sounds like you're describing an MMORPG rather than an open world RPG.

If you play an MMO, it's usually for entirely different reasons; social status really being the primary driving force for most players. Single-player RPGs usually are more for the immersion and storyline.

Character levelling will be based on skill advancement; skills are advanced as you use them, so quests will only give you advancement because of skills used during completion. You can certainly "grind" out a few levels, but that's not really the design of this kind of game.

There is apparently a limited level of scaling, but you will still find "trivial content" in the form of low level creatures that you can dispatch with ease. Hopefully they'll address this by making the disparity between high and low levels much smaller.

As far as the distance between content, you need to stop thinking about it like an MMORPG where you have fixed spawns set distances from town, the farther away you get, the higher level creatures become. There is a form of fast travel, though we don't know how it is implemented, but the point is the exploration of the world, not seeking out yellow-conned creatures to kill for hours. That's an antiquated design that's only in place to maximize the time sink.

The last round of Beta testing usually opens up for applicants on what's called "release day," and the application process involves finding a retailer and purchasing a copy of the game at which point you're automatically accepted.

some of those questions are weird if you ask me...

- "grinding"......there should be no need for such word in bethesdas games....especially TES games
- distance traveled?....you can fast travel AND if you want to find places you just look around and in anycase the distance is not a problem for games like TES its more of agreatnes of this kind of games....you can travel and encounter random encounters :D
- you wont be having problems with character leveling if the level cap is at all like in oblivion.

as I said some of the questions are weird f you ask me

Yes i know its not an MMO. In any game created, there is always something that captures peoples attention, there is also something that keeps them playing. IMHO, the MMO commmunity is rife with people that are abusive to each other, just like people in this thread, not many people are willing or know how to speak a kind word, they just flame. So in looking for game to play that would take my attention from MMOs, one that could be a new replacement for Baldurs Gate, DA:O, and NWN series to name a few. The fallback games when all else fails and stress has you to a point that you want to choke the living hell out of that tool that flames everyone for saying Hi and asking a question or two, the one who posts just to pad the post count, the wanna be guru and know it all. If you dont know what I mean stick around a few more years...

If you've played previous tes games then you should know what would give you incentive to play it over an MMO, TES is god.

I forgot about the fog of war(i think its called) from Oblivion, I thought it was annoying to have to travel a long distance for some quest that I couldnt tell which direction I was supposed to go. Exploration was not something I liked to do back then, it was just to get thru the whole game as fast as possible, shame I used my Oblivion disk for a coaster. It stressed me out a bit. :)

Wait, trying to find your quest objective stressed you out in Oblivion? Are you sure your not thinking of Morrowind?

You just described Morrowind, not Oblivion. If that was your only hang up in MW then Oblivion should have been your sweet spot but I have a feeling that although you cant stand the people that the game structure of an MMO appeals to you. If that is the case then your barking up the wrong tree.

WHEN WILL ALPHA/BETA TESTING OPEN FOR WILLING APPLICANTS?

never

and I don't care...because I want to be pleasantly surprised how much more fun it will be compared to what I expected...which is a high amount already.

Oh, I like many things and many games, its people with elitist attitudes or excessively condescending that I dont like. I may have mixed the 2 up, its been several years since I played either.

I'm better than you!!!!!111!

Seriously though, no alpha or beta testing and I think it is better that way, because if people can alpha/beta test, some people will only play the game one time through and no buy it. I'm not one of them but I don't see a reason for public beta testing when there is no multiplayer.

Some people are just naturally disagreeable. Others are just straight up a-holes and haven't tried to change. I use to be one of the latter lot but having children and wanting to keep friends longer than 6 months softened me. I'm still an a-hole, I just keep it in check most of the time.

What does it take to become a "veteran MMO beta tester"? And if you have to ask what will make you want to play this over your regular game (MMO or single player), doesn't seem to be a good candidate for alpha/beta testing. The purpose of testing is not meant to replace your regular game. And I'm sure alpha testing is done mostly inhouse anyway, or atleast private invite.

I think they would react to the idea of opening the game to beta testers outside the company about the same way they would react to a horde of bird eating spiders making a nest in thier underpants.

Check http://jobs.zenimax.com/index.php?a=info&d=bethesdasoftworks. They have a QA position listed. If you applied and got the job then you would test a game they are publishing. Granted, it may not be Skyrim. Have fun. :P

I know right? I myself am only 16, and I have already done alpha and beta testing on at least 5-10 legit games. I don't consider my self 'veteran' or even use it in an argument or to ask a question anywhere. They were all open to public, and I got lucky and was accepted to test. I do find it funny he said that as if he has been testing games in early development privately for 30 years or something...

This right here. People complain about updates, but I think it's a miracle of gaming. Devs can fix problems found by players quickly and come out with patches! FO:NV took forever, but I think Beths would have patches out quick if things are that bad!
